Agathe

The kingdom mourned. Black flags had been hung all over the country. For the king's funeral, the most important members of the nobility were gathered in the courtyard of the castle. They had all brought white bouquets. Agathe stood on the balcony of the castle in mourning clothes, overlooking the mourning crowd. Next to her were Fritz and Paula and Lea had also arrived. They also held white flowers in their hands.

A white-painted coffin was carried out of the castle by soldiers and accompanied by a mourning procession of the best soldiers. They carried it to the cemetery of the kings, which was a few hundred meters from the castle.

The cemetery housed the country's first mortal kings and also Agathe's first husband. These were located in a large mausoleum, around which were the graves of glorious noble members, as well as princes and princesses. Those who lay here belonged to the royal family or had achieved great things in the name of the rulers. Now Friedrich would find his final resting place there. They would bring his coffin into the mausoleum and seal it with an ornate stone and noble grave goods.

Agathe watched the coffin while a small orchestra played funeral music from a quickly constructed stage. Lea, Fritz, and Paula stepped forward and threw the white flowers from the balcony. An ancient tradition that was left over from the rule of mortals.

The white flowers stood for all the good memories with which they said goodbye to him. The nobles also threw the flowers on the way as soon as the coffin had passed them. The white coffin stood for the fact that the deceased wished to travel to the ancestors contentedly and without remorse.

After a few minutes, the procession left the courtyard of the castle to bury the king in the mausoleum.

This would be done without the presence of the Queen and her children. That's what tradition wanted. Only after a full year of mourning were they allowed to visit his grave. On the day of his death. Tradition demanded that after the grave visit, a great feast was celebrated to state the end of mourning and a new beginning.

Servants hurried into the yard to offer drinks and snacks to the guests. They also did not accompany the deceased to his resting place, and the orchestra now played somewhat more cheerful music.

Agathe left the balcony followed by her family. They would now go to a tribune that had been set up for them at the doors of the castle, where the nobles would gradually silently express their condolences to them. Agathe looked at her two children.

"Fritz, Lea, it's good to have you with me today." She wiped a forced tear from her eyes.

"Mother, of course, we’re here", Lea said quietly. Fritz just nodded.

Together they walked along the corridors of the castle and finally took a seat in the tribune. Servants handed them drinks. From here, they watched as their guests celebrated the king's past life,  or comforted each other until a servant declared that it was time to express their condolences to those who remained. Little by little, her guests came forward and bowed. None of them said anything. That's what tradition wanted.

The orchestra also stopped playing.

Finally, two young wizards came forward and bowed deeply. Agathe smiled and decided to break the traditional silence for a moment. " Earl von Aue and Earl von Kleingrün, thank you very much for your visit!"

"We are honored to have been able to come. Your personal invitation honors us", said Earl von Kleingrün surprised. He was a slightly overweight young man with light blond hair and grey eyes.

"Especially since we belong to the country gentry", added Earl von Aue. He was very tall, solid two meters, and very slim. He had cut his black hair short so that he was almost bald.

"I've heard about your good performance at university. Especially in the areas of politics, so I'm thinking about letting you look at my financial advisor and my legal advisor. Maybe one day you will become part of my council? I will send you invitations soon. My daughter Lea", she pointed to said daughter, "will also be present."

Agathe smiled at her daughter. "You remember Earl Tamme von Aue and Earl Menard von Kleingrün? They were invited to your last birthday ball. You danced with them."

"I remember, mother", Leo said quietly.

The two young men gave each other surprised looks and then bowed again. Lea threw icy looks at her mother, which Agathe ignored.

About an hour later, the funeral ended and the proud queen returned to the castle with her children. In the meantime it had started to rain, so the end of the celebration came in handy for her.

Her children accompanied her to the fireplace room, where a coffee setting was already waiting for them. "Fritz?" She sat down on one of the two armchairs next to the fireplace and watched Fritz and Paula take a seat on one of the two sofas. Lea sat down on the chair on which Friedrich always sat. His book was still on the small table.

"Yes, mother?", asked her son.

"I heard about children? Surely these are just rumors?"

"Mother, of course!" Fritz bowed his head. "Just rumors."

"Good."

She didn't believe him. Paula had turned pale at the question. Agathe planned to send them a few soldiers. And also to Paula's parents. She would come up with an excuse, she wanted to avoid a fight with her son. But the soldiers would be looking for children. Since Agathe was planning to expand her kingdom, she needed Fritz at her side. She did not want to jeopardize this with a quarrel.

Children could also die from accidents...

"Mother?" Lea gave her an indignant look. "Did you really just ask that? If Paula and Fritz want children, that's their decision and not yours! And what about the two Earls? Why did you invite them? Why did you decide to break the tradition for these two,  and invited them? And why did you promise them my presence?"

"Do I truly need to explain this to you, child?" Agathe sighed. "They are both promising talents. Both are a little over twenty and still malleable. I plan to let them learn in my council. And I want you to marry one of them. Their families are not influential, but the two could be. If we guide them."

Lea shook her head, stunned. "Your husband just got buried! And you're already thinking about weddings? I'm not going to get married. I’ve found my place. And that's the Academy!" She jumped up and stormed out of the room angrily.

Agathe looked after her furious. You will, child.

Emmie

The prince had kept his word. Emmie and Peyo were officially only responsible for him and Paula. Therefore, the two spent a lot of time in the servants' rooms. Emmie had taken a nap during the funeral. Their services were not needed at the moment. Not even for appearances. Peyo had sat by the window, lost in thought, watching the funeral, as they could actually see parts of it from the small window of her room.

Now the two were in the small salon of Fritz and Paula. They sat in front of a fireplace and listened to their 'owners' quietly complaining about the queen. Paula was worried.

"Do you think she believed us? That we don't have children?", she asked her husband quietly.

"No, I don't think so. We should expect a few surprise visits. Or whatever she comes up with. I just hope she doesn't see our little ones in a vision." Fritz sighed. "Or me with the rebels."

"Could this happen?", asked Emmie.

Peyo looked up from the book he was reading.

Fritz nodded. "Yes, it could. But we consciously took this risk."

"Oh..." That sounded scary. Emmie looked at Peyo, who buried his nose in his book again. His hands trembled slightly.

"Can I be part of the rebellion?", asked Emmie. The question had been burning on her tongue for some time.

"What?" Paula looked at her shocked. "You’re still a child!"

Emmie snorted. "Don't you trust me?"

"You don't trust us", Fritz replied. "Why do you want to be a rebel?"

Emmie snorted. If she wanted to convince him, she had to trust him. Even if every fiber of her body resisted it. But Fritz and Paula had only been nice and accommodating so far... "I'm an alpha wolf. I wanted to take over my mother's pack one day. That's what I was trained for. But here I feel powerless. I want to determine my own life! I want to do something."

"Emmie!" Peyo reached for her hand. She smiled.

Paula sat down next to her on the floor. "I understand that. But you are still so young. You have your whole life ahead of you. And you’re not powerless. You’re part of our family now. Even if we can't replace your parents. Or your pack."

That made Emmie laugh. "My parents are not exactly great", she said bitterly. "And neither is my pack. I wanted to do a lot better. I’m a fighter, a warrior, not a little girl!"

Fritz nodded. "Good. I'll take you with me when I have to do something for the rebellion again. As long as it's not too dangerous."

Emmie rolled her eyes. Paula immediately put a hand on her shoulders.

"Nothing too dangerous. You are still very young", she said quietly. Then she looked at Fritz. "Is there any news from your siblings? I saw a servant slip you a piece of paper."

Fritz nodded. "Ingrid and Adam have officially joined us. Things are moving forward!"

"A servant?", asked Peyo quietly.

Fritz winked at him. "There are also rebels here in the castle. They are spies."

In the evening, Peyo and Emmie played cards in her room. Peyo did not like to be alone in the servants' quarters. Mr. Mühe in particular frightened him. The small, fat gentleman basically expressed himself very harshly to the two. He called them pampered, lazy, useless servants. The servants of the castle had not escaped the fact that the two teenagers 'worked' very little.

"Do you want to make the game a little more interesting?", asked Emmie mischievously.

Peyo frowned. "More interesting?" They sat on the cold floor on Emmie's blanket. Next to her simple and very uncomfortable bed. It was generally very cold in the room.

"Yes!" Emmie winked at him. "The loser must kiss the winner!"

"What?" Peyo's cheeks turned red. "A kiss? On the mouth?"

"Yes!" Actually, she had only wanted to tease him, the suggestion was not meant seriously, but Peyo was so cute with red cheeks that she changed her mind. She wanted to kiss him.

„Oh…“

"Don't you want to?", she asked as innocently as possible.

"I don't know", Peyo murmured, looking at his hands in embarrassment. “Well... Not on the mouth! The cheek? I'll join in."

"Agreed!"

The two now played for a kiss. Emmie grinned triumphantly as Peyo chewed nervously on his lower lip. He won the game. Emmie lost on purpose.

"Oh... I won." Now his ears turned red too.

"Ready for your kiss?" Emmie realized she loved teasing him. She winked.

"Yes?" Embarrassed, he leaned away from her a little.

When Emmie leaned towards him, he closed his eyes nervously, Emmie smiled, then kissed his cheek. Gentle and fleeting. Peyo opened his eyes and looked directly into hers. Emmie felt warm.

"Now you're red too", he said.

"Am I?"

Peyo nodded. "You look pretty... With red cheeks." He blinked. Then he suddenly jumped up and rushed to the door.

"I'll go to the bathroom for a moment. See you soon!" And he ran away.

Emmie laughed.
