(POV: John)

{C'mon John. It's just a bunch of Goblins!}

A scout said as he turned around and faced me, walking backwards nonchalantly. The Guild Master had split us up into groups of three at the gate before sending us off. My group, which contained 2 veteran D Rank scouts and I, is the strongest group among the scouts. Thus, we were sent to the front lines, stationed just outside the forest. Even though everyone here is a veteran, I felt the need to correct him:

{Hey, you got to be careful! Who knows whether the report the first batch of scouts gave is correct. We are dealing with a Rank B+ monster right now, one bad move and we are dead.}

The adventurer scoffed at my words:

{Do you really think that you are a better scout than I am? You are just lucky you got into a better party.}

I remember him now, we both registered on the same day in Bastion Town. He performed better than me during the test and was given Rank E while I was given Rank F. When we came out of the examination room, he was immediately invited to a Rank D party, and I still remember the look he gave me. I, on the other hand, had to go solo for an entire year.

I would stay in the forest, sometimes up to three days, in order to train my fighting skills and tracking ability. I would risk my life in order to improve myself, and improve I did.

When I was promoted to D Rank, the other guy was still a Rank E adventurer within a Rank D party. From that day onwards, he grew an unfair grudge against me. I wouldn't mind throwing hands with him, but now isn't the time, we had to pay attention to our surrounding.

{It isn't the time for this. Let's focus on the mission.}

{Oh, too scared to fight back, or do you feel that I'm right?}

Alright, looks like I will have to teach him a lesson in humility so that he doesn't jeopardize our mission later on. I took a step towards him while cracking my knuckles, causing him to take one step back. Heh, looks like he is all bark and no bite.

{Are you guys seriously going to fight right now? We are supposed to send reports back, you know?}

The third member of our three-man group finally spoke when he saw that we were really going to fight. His warning put out the fire in my heart and I calmed myself down. What was I thinking getting into fights during a mission? Still, this guy really has a way of getting on my nerves.

Just then, I instinctively felt a sense of danger from my back. Unsheathing my dagger, I swung it behind me. As my body turned, I didn't see anything. But why do I feel that my dagger has hit something? Something began shimmering into existence, starting from near my dagger. Wait! It isn't coming into existence! It was coming out of invisibility!

Due to the attack, the object in front of me finally appeared in its full form. With a dagger locked with mine, a Goblin, garbed in a black cloak and a black mask, appeared.

{In this area? Impossible!}

I couldn't help but speak my real thoughts. Goblin Assassin, a Rank C monster. Capable of going invisible to launch a sneak attack, but becomes visible once the attack is performed or once it receives an attack. Once visible, however, it isn't that difficult for a Rank C adventurer to defeat. At least, this was what I read about them.

Looks like its invisibility is powerful enough for it to not get detected by three scouts in an open plain. However, the main issue is that it appeared here. This meant that there could potentially be other Rank C Goblins in this beast tide.

{We have to inform the Town as soon as possible! Help me defeat this Goblin!}

I turned my head around as I said this, only to find four figures instead of two. One of the figures was stumbling around while pressing on his neck, his hands already completely covered in blood, while another figure was lying face down on the floor, a dagger inserted into his back. I stared at the remaining two figures, which turned out to be two more Goblin Assassins.

Three Goblin Assassins. This is bad. Real bad. Not only am I incapable of fighting against three of them, but God knows how many Rank C Goblins there are in this beast tide now. Usually, Adventurers would try their best to bring back the bodies of their fallen comrades, but that clearly isn't possible right now. I had to get out of here and get every scout to run! With the existence of Goblin Assassins, the scouts have basically been made useless.

Returning my attention to the Goblin that ambushed me, I quickly charged towards it and launched a flurry of blows. The Goblin managed to parry everything but retreated a few steps in the process. Taking this chance, I began running back towards the town.

The Goblin Assassins immediately made chase. I noticed that they can't catch up with me, but they can definitely catch up with the Rank D and Rank E scouts. Deciding that I should try my best to take them out before they went invisible again, I pulled out a dynamite Eren gave me.

{Spark.}

Praying that it was as powerful as Eren said, I lit the dynamite using a simple fire spell and tossed it into the Goblins' path. The Goblin made minimal effort to bypass it, only circling 3 meters (10 feet) around the dynamite. Unfortunately for them, this is the last mistake they will ever make. A massive fireball erupted from the fist size dynamite, sending the flaming bodies of the Goblins flying high into the air.

{Woah!}

I exclaimed in surprise as the shockwave nearly knocked me over. Thankfully, I managed to remain on my feet and continued running. I glanced behind me, sighing in relief when I saw the burning, unmoving corpses of the Goblin Assassins. Turning my gaze back to my front, I saw a group of scouts standing in front of me. I quickly warned them:

{RUN!}

Without hesitation, the scouts quickly ran alongside me as they questioned what was going on.

{Goblin Assassins! They can assassinate us before we know what's going on! We need to get to the third team!}

The third team from the forest is the only team that had a communication crystal, which is used to warn the town. The plan was for the first two team to retreat to the third team the moment the beast tide begins moving. The third team will then send the warning back to the town using the crystal. This is so that the communication crystal isn't lost in an ambush, which the first two teams are the most likely to face.

Soon, we saw the third team and warned them about what was going on. They quickly sent a warning back to the town about the appearance of the Goblins Assassins before fleeing with us. This went on until the Town was finally in sight. Every scout is well on their way back to the town.

Having been running at my top speed for half an hour straight, I was almost out of breath. But just a bit more, and I will be in the safety of the town. At this moment, I felt a sudden sense of danger behind my back, and I quickly did a roll forward.

I was located at the back of the group in case there were more assassins, and it seems that my worries were not unfounded. Just as I recovered from my roll, I felt a sense of danger to my left. I quickly swung my dagger, deflecting a blow as I stumbled backwards. Sensing another attack from behind, I dove towards my left, dodging the attack.

Three Goblin Assassins were staring at me, their daggers at the ready. Damn it. My instincts had been at its max for half an hour, causing me to feel exhausted, and they were also too close for me to use the dynamite. Looks like I have to fight.

One of the scouts, who had been running away, suddenly shouted:

{They are visible now, attack!}

Two scouts rushed towards the Goblin Assassins, intending to save me. Before I could yell at them to continue running, blood suddenly spurted out of their bodies as they fell over. Two more Goblin Assassins appeared, and I was fully surrounded. Four lives lost already! Just how many of these damn Goblins are there!

The rest of the scouts had turned towards me, wanting to help, but I yelled at them to run. Although Goblin Assassins are not strong face-on fighters, they were still Rank C monsters. If the other scouts attempted to help me, they would just get themselves killed.

I doubt that I can hold on long enough for the town to send reinforcement. Looks like this is it. I will try to take down as many Goblins as I can. Maybe I can set off the explosives Eren gave me and go out together with the Goblins.

I took out the remaining two sticks of dynamite. Eren probably never thought that I would end up using his dynamite like this, huh? Goodbye Annabelle, Sally, Alex and Eren. Live well. I hope that we will get to form a party together again in our next life. Rubbing the tears that unknowingly came out of my eyes, I took once last look at the Town, then I started chanting:

{Spa- Wha?}

I could not help but interrupt my chant due to the confusing scene. What the heck is going on? The Goblin Assassin in front of me had suddenly fallen over, an arrow sprouting from its head. Did an archer leave the town to help me?

I looked towards the town once again, this time catching a glint of silver in the air. An arrow accurately struck the head of another Goblin, killing it instantly, leaving only three Goblin Assassins alive. I quickly kept the dynamite back into my pocket and unsheathed my dagger. Looks like I'm not going to die today.

On the town's wall, everyone was holding their breath as they stared at a man aiming his bow calmly. The bow looked like the typical bow other than for the cylinder on it, which the man was looking through. A female mage could be seen next to him, hands clutched together in prayer. Finally, the man released the arrow, immediately nocking another after. Everyone on the wall looked with anticipation and hope as the arrow travelled more than 500 meters away (547 yards).

{He- He hit it!}

Loud cheers resounded from the crowd the moment a Goblin fell, but the man ignored them, releasing another arrow calmly.
