Levi
Noah was a huge show-off. Levi watched the nineteen-year-old boy bragging that he was very strong. The whole family was like that. From Noah to the youngest. Marko. The twelve-year-old Wolf, like Noah, had inherited the alpha genes from their father, and the six brothers fought each other almost daily. Noah, Arthur, Valedmar, Aaren, Balder and Marko. The biggest troublemakers of the pack. Especially Marko had only mischief in his head. At least that's what Levi's mother said.
"Do I really have to come along?" Levi was sitting at the kitchen table, practicing reading. For an eight-year-old, he was particularly good at it.
"Of course, you'll come with me! Beta Frederik invited us to dinner with his family. This is a great honor! And he wants to cook his infamous pasta casserole!" His father, Almin, ruffled Levi's hair. "Your brother is already very excited. He hopes to make friends with their son."
"But Finn is never outside! And he's a year older than Abbe!" protested Levi.
"And that's why they can't be friends?" His mother, Svea, came into the kitchen with ten-year-old Abbe. "One year difference isn't much, Levi."
But for Levi, it seemed like a lot. The nine-year-olds at school were all much taller and stronger than him. The packed school was very small, but his pack was proud to be big enough to have its own school. In very small packs, the children were taught by their parents. But Levi had never seen Finn at school.
"It's good to be friends with a beta wolf!", announced Abbe.
"Oh, no. Finn is not a beta wolf", Almin disagreed. "This will be our Levi! Just like your great-grandmother! I didn't think that the gene would prevail in our family again... But I hope you two get along well with Finn."
"But great-grandma belonged to another pack", Abbe murmured. "Grandma came into this pack because she wasn't a beta. Why should Levi become Beta in this pack? We have a beta family here! Finn should be Beta!"
Her grandmother had come into this pack because she was tired of being compared to her mother and beta brother. Since then, Levi's family has lived in the village near the border.
"I don't want to go there!", grumbled Levi. "I want to stay here!"
"Oh no! Certainly not!" His mother shook her head. "Beta Frederik and Beta Elodie are counting on your coming! Beta Frederik has good news for you, Levi!"
"Why are they both called Beta?" Levi frowned. "Elodie is not a beta wolf."
"Partners always share the title." His father winked at him. "If one day you find a nice girl, she'll be called Beta."
"So romantic!" His mother pushed the two boys to the door.
"Ew! Levi and a girl!" Abbe stuck out his tongue at him.
"Hey. You'll find one too!" Almin laughed.
"No. Ew! Girls are stupid!", grumbled Abbe. "They always want to do handicrafts, dance, sniff out tracks and play princess. They rarely fight with us boys!"
Levi didn't think girls were stupid. Especially not since a girl had won against Abbe in a brawl and he had to limp home.
When they arrived at the beta family, it smelled wonderful. After pasta casserole. Levi's mouth watered.
"Welcome, welcome!" Beta Elodie greeted them at the door. "How nice that you came! The food is already ready and on the table! Finn is looking forward to meeting Levi and Abbe! Frederik, unfortunately, had to go. Alpha Aksel called for him. Apparently, there are problems with another pack."
Elodie led them into her small dining room. On the table was a steaming casserole bowl. On one of the chairs was sitting a thin, pale boy with light blond hair. Finn. Levi could only vaguely remember having met him before. The boy seldom left the house.
"Hi, Finn! I'm Abbe!" His brother walked directly toward Finn, who just stared at him in shock. Next to Abbe's dark skin, Finn looked all the paler. Resolutely, he held out his hand to him.
"Hello", the boy murmured, looking at his mother for help.

"Oh! Finn doesn't shake hands. He's sick", she said quickly. "Sit down. You must be hungry. We have enough."
"You're sick?" Abbe sat down next to Finn, who answered the question with a shrug. Abbe's gaze wandered to Elodie as everyone sat down and the wolf began to hand out the casserole. "Then why don't you have a new child? One that isn't sick and will be beta?"
"Abbe!", hissed his father immediately.
"Oh. I'm terribly embarrassed now!" His mother threw her hands over her mouth.
Elodie smiled and got herself some casserole. She sat down next to her son, whom she smiled at lovingly. "It doesn't matter. Children are like that." She stroked her son's hair. Levi noticed how careful she was.
"Why?", asked Abbe. "What did I do wrong?"
"That was tactless!", his father muttered. "You shouldn’t ask that."
"Well. It’s fine. One child is enough for me, Abbe." Elodie laughed softly. "And Finn is also a wonderful one!"
"Huh?" Abbe looked confused at his father, who only sighed.
Levi laughed softly, earning a threatening look from his mother.
"But to answer the question. On my side of the family, there is a hereditary disease. I don't have it myself, but after Finn was born, it was clear that I could still pass on the disease. That's why Frederik and I decided against more children. And we are very happy to have our Finn." She smiled again at her son, who was now blushing. "So! Enjoy your meal!"
"Mom", Finn murmured softly. "This is embarrassing!"
"Excuse me, honey!" Elodie grinned in amusement.
The adults soon started talking about boring things and Abbe tried to engage Finn in a conversation. Unsuccessful. Finn answered, if at all, only with a nod or a shake of the head. From time to time he looked at Levi, who grimaced and made the older boy smile. "Behave!", his mother reprimanded him quietly. He rolled his eyes. Levi couldn't wait for the evening to end and to go home.
"Yes. That there are problems with another pack is inconvenient. So soon after soldiers took a young wolf to serve in a household." Elodie sighed. "That's really annoying."
"Why is there a quarrel anyway?", asked Almin.
Now Levi listened attentively. Soldiers frightened him. When they came to the village, terrible things happened. "Are the soldiers coming back soon?", he wanted to know.
"Oh. No. Certainly not", Elodie replied. "Don't worry! But I have great news for you!"
"Great?" Levi frowned.
"Yes. Since you become a beta of this pack, my husband will teach you everything there is to know. Are you happy?"
Levi was not pleased. No. He was confused. "Why?"
His mother laughed. "So that you become a good beta wolf! We are very happy about that, Elodie. Thank you."
The wolf nodded contentedly.
(Wait! Stop! Why wasn't this chapter about ME? It's my story, not that of a beta wolf. I won't let my place as the main character be disputed! I already have enough problems. My sister? A boastful pain in the butt. Her best friend? Impolite! And there would only be more problems... But before that, this beta wolf entered my life.)
