Mads

"So! The plan!" Emmie stood confident of victory in his small room. "It's foolproof!"

"That's exactly what you said when you tried to convince me to steal the sweets from Adahlia."

"That wasn't one of my brightest moments, yes. Mom was very upset about it... She said Adahlia would be my or Einar's beta one day, so I had to be nice to her..."

His room was painted a light yellow. Self-painted pictures hung on the walls. His parents' house was one of the oldest. It had been carved into the rock, unlike the modern houses of the pack. A thick curtain hung in front of his small, narrow window. Emmie stood in front of it and grinned at him as only an alpha could. Self-assured. As if nothing could stop her.

"Adahlia beat me up!", snorted Mads. "Because of chocolate! And then she said that I should have a good look at the chocolate because I won’t get it from the witches. I immediately told Dad, but he just said fights would be good for me."

Emmie rolled her eyes. "Men!"

„Hey!“

"Back to my plan! We go to the cliffs! And that's where we train!"

"Or we'll do some crafting together?", suggested Mads. "Mom showed me how to press flowers and also how to fold them out of paper!"

"No. We can do that afterward! To the cliffs!"

"But Mom said, I can't go there. That's too close to the other pack. The one we have quarrels with because they build their houses too close to our territory!"

Emmie put her hands on her hips. "Mads!"

"Yes?"

"Do you want to be a weakling?"

"No." He shook his head. "I want to be a strong wolf!"

"Good. Then let's go to the cliffs now!"

The cliffs. That’s what they called a narrow path that led to an adjacent gorge between the High Mountains. Here grew some bushes and dry trees. Behind the gorge, the path continued and led to the next pack. The pack of Alpha Aksel and Nilla. The pack had grown strongly in recent years and therefore expanded their village. Unfortunately, they got too close to Mad's pack and the alpha couple was anything but thrilled about it. They said the land on which the other pack was now building would be theirs. The two packs had been fighting for a long time about the lush meadows and the fertile soil behind the gorge, as there was not much of it in the barren mountains. And they also fought over the gorge itself.

The two children set off. They told Mads's mother that they wanted to go to the marketplace to play there. But, of course, they didn't go there. No. When they were out of sight, they quickly ran out of the village to the cliffs and the gorge.

"We're here!" Emmie hugged Mads excitedly. "I love the gorge! How far do you think the cliffs go? We are already high up, but the cliffs? They're even higher!"

"I don't know." Mads got dizzy when he looked up. "And what do we do now?"

"We fight!"

"Fighting? Really?"

"How else are you going to become stronger?" Emmie looked at him reproachfully. Then she quickly slipped out of her clothes and turned into a gray wolf. Playfully provocative, she nudged Mads with her muzzle.

"I don't think I'll get stronger if I let you beat me up!", grumbled Mads. Emmie snorted and rolled her eyes. "All I get from it are bruises and a bad mood!"

Emmie grabbed his trouser leg and pulled on it. His pants slid down.

"Fine!" Resigned to his fate, he took off his clothes and turned into a caramel-colored wolf. He was slightly smaller than Emmie. Snorting annoyed, he tried to attack his best friend.

There was no doubt that Emmie was an alpha and Mads, unlike her, was more of a... Pathetic worm. At least that's how he felt. He had nothing to oppose and was instead beaten up with all good intentions. To his delight, Emmie was finally tired of the scuffle after pushing him to the ground several times and transformed back.

She hadn't seriously hurt him, of course. Mads had barely felt her teeth and claws. Emmie was very restrained. But that didn't help him feel better.

"There's a lot of work ahead of us!", she murmured and got dressed again. You have teeth and claws Mads. Try to use them!"

"I don't see any point in it!" Mads sat miserably cross-legged and looked at his clothes. "You are bigger and stronger than me."

"And that's exactly why we have to train every day from today on!"

"If you say so…" He got dressed again and sulked at the sparse bushes between which they had wrestled. Tiny flowers also bloomed here. His father called the delicate flowers cliff-flowers. They smelled of vanilla.

"What are you doing here?" A boy with dark skin and disheveled black hair approached them.

Emmie growled. "What are you doing here? This is our gorge!"

"It's not. It belongs to my pack! So? What are you doing here?" The boy looked from Emmie to Mads, who tried to hide restlessly. Just like Emmie, the strange boy tall. And he smelled like a beta wolf. "I'm going to be a beta! Therefore, I may send you away!"

"And I'm going to be an alpha! This is our country." Emmie stuck her tongue out at the boy.

He just snorted and looked curiously at Mads. "And who are you? You don't smell like a beta wolf."

"I'm Mads. And you?" Confused, he looked at Emmie, who just rolled her eyes and growled softly.

"Levi", the boy replied, grinning. "And what's the name of your alpha friend?"

"Hey! That's rude!", protested Emmie. "I'm standing right here!"

"Emmie. She's my best friend. Do you want to play with us? I want to pick some of the flowers to press them!" Mads had no intention of getting into an argument between an Alpha and Beta. Maybe he could distract them with this?

Emmie groaned in annoyance, but the boy, Levi, came up to them and sat down next to Mads. He ignored Emmie's growl. "Pressing flowers? Why?" His eyes were pale blue. Pretty.

"I like flowers. I want to collect as many as possible."

"Good. I help you and forgive you for being on our land!"

"It's our land!", muttered Emmie, but she helped pick the flowers. After picking a whole bouquet, they decided to play catch until they lay down exhausted between the bushes.

"My parents are not beta wolves, but our betas do not have a child who is a beta. Therefore, I will take over the position. And that's good. Because otherwise, I would either have to submit to the other beta wolf or leave the pack!", said Levi. "My brother Abbe, the idiot, doesn't want me to become Beta. Because then he would have to listen to me, even though he is the older one."

"Do you want to be Beta?", asked Emmie with interest. "I want to be an Alpha, but my brother is also an alpha wolf. And he's stronger than me."

"Hm. I do not know. Bete Frederik was hunting with me yesterday. That was fun."

"Hunting? I'm a vegetarian!", announced Mads proudly, secretly sniffing Levi without him noticing. He smelled good. Very good. Better than Emmie.

"Really? And your parents?" Levi was amazed. "Are they vegetarians too? I've never heard of that! What's that?"

"Mads does not eat meat", Emmie replied. Mads nodded in agreement.

"No meat?" That made Levi laugh. "A wolf that eats no meat? And your parents too?"

"No. My parents and sister eat meat and they don't understand why I don't want to eat it. I don't like hunting. That's too brutal for me."

"What do you like to do then?" Levi looked at him grinning. "Hunting carrots?"

"No!" Mads didn't like carrots. "I like it when mom reads to me. I like plants. Oh! And drawing!"

"And Mads can sing!", added Emmie. "He has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard!

Mads blushed. "I don’t..."

"Sing something! Please", Levi told him. Mads shook his head. He didn’t like to sing in front of others.

"Levi! Here you are!" A boy with frizzy brown hair and black wolf ears came into the gorge. Green leaves were stuck in his hair, and he had dirt on his clothes and cheeks. "Who are your new friends?" The boy was older than Mads, and Emmie. Maybe twelve?

Levi sat up and sighed. "Why are you here Marko?"

Mads sniffed the air. The other boy was an alpha. Like Emmie.

"What I’m doing here? Beta Frederik and your parents are looking for you! Come on! I actually wanted to spread mud in the teachers' room with Balder! Balder managed to steal the keys. So come now! We are not supposed to come here! Are they from the other pack?"

"And if so?" hissed Emmie, growling. The boy paid no attention to her.

Levi stood up and grinned contritely at the two. "Well then! I have to go home! It was fun with you."

"Bye, Levi," Mads murmured sadly. Would he see the other boy again?

(Levi. You should remember the name. A new, future show-off has entered the stage of my life! A show-off that smells good... Very good, in fact. But it took me a few years to meet him again.)
