Chapter 15 - A Day In The City

Early in the morning, Ally and Noah walk Chester to his car as he prepares to head to work.

 

Ally: Please, have a good day honey!

Chester: Don’t worry. We’ll just be resubmitting designs for certain office rooms after a Guardians mission tore up the place.

Noah: I bet it was Kai and Ano’s team.

Chester: I hope not! I-i mean if it was, i’d give them a stern talking to about being safe and respecting property!

Noah: And because you’d pass out if they were fighting someone who can crush rooms.

Chester: Yeah, yeah! …I do hope they visit soon.

 

Chester picks up his briefcase, but Noah immediately grabs it.

 

Noah: Hold on, dad! Let me put this in the car for now.

Ally: My, you’ve been much more energetic to help us with every little thing since Kai and Ano left. You don’t have to push yourself like that, Noah.

Noah: Yeah, but, I have a promise to keep with Kai! Besides, he’s probably getting himself into a lot of trouble. If Ano’s gonna have his hands full, then I should too.

 

Their conversation is cut short as they see the mail truck come to their mailbox.

 

Ally: Oh! Chester! Please stay for just a bit longer! I want to see if they finally wrote to us!

Chester: Um, I’m not sure, i don’t wanna run late-

 

Ally’s sad face causes Chester to reconsider.

 

Chester: Oh… Why not?

 

They sit on the living room couch flipping through the bills and other mail.

 

Chester: Bill, bill, ad for water park-

Noah: Make sure to save that!

Chester: bill… I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!

Ally: What?

Chester: THEY… (gets tearful) Finally wrote to us! 

Noah: Hurry and o[en it!

Dear Mr and Mrs Chestser, Also Noah

Hi guys! Ano’s writing on this page for both of us! It’s already been about a month since we joined the Guardian Brigade, and life’s been pretty hectic! We’ve done a lot of awesome missions that we can’t talk about, but we’ve been giving it our all! I got both of my arms broken if that’s anything to go by. Anyways, our Captain has been really great (After being absent, but i admit he’s getting a little better - Ano) And our friends Zeke and Saiko have been well! They send their best wishes, by the way. Hopefully, we’ll be able to visit soon for the winter holidays! Oh, and tell Noah that he can keep the Action-man figure i left in my room. Since he’s been getting into the series. Me and Ano (Kai and I) miss you guys and we’re sending all of our love!

Chester: KAI GOT HIS ARMS BROKEN!!??

Ally: (in thought) Oh, Kai. I wish you could’ve given the news easier to him

Ally: Calm down, Chester. I’m sure he’s getting top notch treatment! Our boys knew what they were signing up for. Though, we should still remind them to be careful.

 

Ally notices Noah walking off.

 

Ally: Noah? Where are you going?

Noah: You kidding me? I’ve been waiting for Kai to come back to get his figure, and he ends up letting me have it instead! i’m gettin’ my reward for being so patient!

(in thought) I wonder if i should give him something of mine in return… nah he’d be all noble and give it back. Still, ths is pretty sweet.

 

Ally: Hmm, let’s write them back right away! The next day they get mail shouldn't be too far!

Chester: Sure thing!

 

…

A few days later

…

 

Kai puts on his emblem after waking up and getting through his morning routine. He picks up Talin, who’s starting to wake up himself.

 

Kai: Hey, good morning!

Talin: It’s morning already? I admit I could've used a bit more time.

Kai: Yeah, I agree with ya. But I wanna start my day as early as I can.

Talin: It’s understandable, knowing who you are. How are your arms?

Kai: They feel pretty light, but I'm glad they finished healing up yesterday. Though, I kinda wish the whole team didn’t have to take time off because of me.

Talin: Both teams were given time off after the mission, correct? Don’t pin this on yourself.
Kai: I guess you’re right. Our break’s only halfway through, so let’s just make sure we do the best we can.

Talin: Right.

 

Kai puts Talin in the emblem pocket, and heads down stairs. With Captain John, Saiko, Zeke and Ano waiting for him at the kitchen counter

 

Kai: Woah! How did you guys wake up before me? Saiko, I get. But, Ano!?

Ano: I guess i was just ready to get up early. Don’t expect this to happen often, though.

Captain John: It’s a good thing you did, it’ll make this go by faster. 

 

Kai sits down at the counter.

 

Kai: What's up Captain John?

Captain John: It's mail time. Kai, you and Ano got a letter from your family. Saiko, you got a letter from your sister. And Zeke, you got a letter from your uncle. Also, we got a special envelope, but I'll save it until you read your stuff first.

 

Kai: Ally and Chester sent us back a letter! 

Ano: Hurry up and open it.

Zeke: How come they didn't just send us phone messages?

Captain John: The district higher ups prefer mail delivery by teleportation, they think it's safer so any shady guys can't trace back to something from someone's phone and cause trouble.

Zeke: Oh, that makes sense. Well, I'm glad Uncle Bob wrote, he doesn't really like writing.

Ano: Guess he really wanted to send you something.

Kai: "Dear Kai & Ano, we're so glad you're ok after the mission with that scary group of bad people. We can't tell you how proud we are of your growth! Please keep it up! And be safe! You know Chester has a worrisome heart! - Ally" "You better keep up the good work your team is doing, boys! I can't believe how far you've come since you were as tall to my hips! I also finally learned how to work the DVD player! Looks like I'm growing right alongside ya! - Chester" "Hey guys, I heard you did amazing on an important mission, so congrats. I finally changed my grade in science from a D to a C, so, there's that. P.s. I found the figure Kai gave me, so, thanks dork."

 

Talin: It was nice of you to give up such a cherished possession to Noah.

Kai: Eh, it was nothing.

Zeke: My uncle said he's super proud and shocked I fought a bulky guy!

Kai: That’s awesome! Hey Saiko, what does your letter say?

Saiko: Hm? Oh, I'll read it later.

Captain John: Well, now that that's all taken care of. Here's the special surprise! 

 

He opens the green envelope and slides them 4  square pieces of paper* your pay!

Kai: Woah, Pay!?

Zeke: Money!?

Ano: Seriously?

Saiko: A Paycheck?

Captain John: Well, yeah. Duh! Freshmen rookies or not, you're Guardians now. Of course you're gonna get paid. Not as much as me, though. But, enjoy. 

Kai: Hey Ano! Let's send some of this back to Ms. Ally and the others!

Ano: Yeah, sure!

Zeke: I can buy the new Pomp comic I wanted!

Saiko: $200? Seems a bit less than what i imagined.

Kai: Are you kidding? This is alot!

Captain John: Be smart with whatever you spend it on. Now that this is taken cared of, I'm taking a nap.

Saiko: But it's only 10 am-

Kai: What do you guys think we should do with this?

Zeke: Let's go buy some movies!

Kai: Sounds good! Time off is nice, but I feel we're gonna be bored for most of this break.

Saiko: Sorry we can't have a regularly scheduled near death experience everyday.

Kai: It's not like I walk around with a "Please try to kill me" sign on my back!

Zeke: We can have those later! Let’s just have fun for now.

Saiko: I guess I don't mind shopping, as long as I get to pick one movie.

Kai: We should head out at 12.

Ano: Okay.

Zeke: This is going to be fun! 

 

And soon, the clock signals the afternoon.

 

Kai: Hey! Saiko! It's time to go!

*Saiko opens the door*

Saiko: I'm ready… How come you're wearing your emblem? We're on a break.

Kai: I don't know, it feels better with it on. Plus this guy doesn't want to go back in my pocket.

Talin: All I see is darkness in there! I refuse to sit in there!

 

They all head downstairs.

 

Zeke: Come on! Hurry up!

Kai: We just walked down! Jeez.

Ano: We're heading to the Entertainment Palace, right?

Zeke: Yep! I hope they have News Rangers in their collection!

Kai: That comedy show with those guys who try to find news everywhere?

Zeke: Yeah! I hope they make a new season soon. I’m gonna make you watch it one day, Ano!

Ano: I might give it a try, this weekend… Might.

Kai: Let's head out.

 

The team walk down the sidewalk in the city, walking past the small buildings Wasabi Arts, Daven-Techs, Puppets emporium and M.M Comics. They head inside the Entertainment Palace.

Zeke: Eh!? Sold out!?

Ano: I guess you’ll just have to catch reruns.

Zeke: Wait! Check behind that row of A Kite in The Sky dvd boxes! Someone might’ve hidden a copy there to buy later!

Ano: I doubt someone would’ve-

 

Ano sees and slides the last News Rangers DvD case out of the row. After being surprised. The 2 look at each other and silently agree to take it.

 

Saiko: I'm not sure if I should I choose between Dancers Quarrel or Heart Of Army

Kai: a dance comedy or a war movie? How do choices like that end up getting pinned against each other?

Saiko: I guess I just like whatever I can relate to.

Kai: Hmm, I'd choose the dancing one. We're trying to relax after all.

Saiko: Good point.

 

A slightly bulky, brown haired tall guy walks up to Kai with a nasty smirk.

 

Cardin: Well, I didn't expect to find trash in the middle of this aisle!

Kai: Huh? Oh, Cardin? Why are you here?

Cardin: Eh, I figured I rent some movies for the weekend after I put in some good missions. Maybe someone should make a documentary about the freak you are! 

Saiko: …Who's he?

Kai: Some guy who picked on me back at school. I haven’t really thought about him since the exam.

Cardin: Watch it! I'm the one with awesome Stone Power! And you have… Wait, what did you have? Oh, right! Nothing! The fact that a weirdo like you managed to get into the rookies league with people like me makes me sick.

Saiko: If your tiny brain can comprehend this, Kai made it in through skill and determination. In fact, we’re on break for completing a high-stakes mission. So why don’t you-

Kai: Saiko, it's fine. You don't have to stand up for me.

Saiko: What? This guy's an idiot-

Cardin (In thought): (Huh!? Wuh-why the hell is he hangin’ around someone like Saiko!? She shouldn’t be waistin’ her skills on a team with this guy!)

Kai: Besides, I’d rather not pick a fight with someone who wouldn't be worth it.

Cardin: ...What did you say you little shit!? 

 

Cardin goes for a punch but Kai moves out of the way, letting him fall to the ground. He gets back up and brushes his shirt off.

 

Cardin: Damn it! I always throw my punches too hard!

Kai: Can’t you leave now? We’re kinda busy.

Cardin: Listen. I don't know how you cheated your way into becoming a rookie, but you’re gonna get crushed out there! So it’d be a good idea to learn your pla-

A scream at the front of the store, with mist starting to float in the air gets the attention of the others.

 

Zeke and Ano quickly run up to the teenager who’s working at the front counter.

 

Zeke: What's wrong, ma'am?

Worker: S-someone used Mist Aura to blind me and they stole the cash register!

 

The other rookies make it to the front as well.

 

Kai: Zeke! What happened?

Zeke: Someone just stole their cash! 

Cardin: Don't worry, ma'am! The upcoming Guardian from Team Silver; Cardin! Will save the day- 

 

His words are interrupted by Kai dashing out the door. Zeke follows him as Kai turns to the left and sees someone running down the sidewalk clearly holding something. Kai starts to run but Zeke stops him by holding his emblem and offers Kai a piggyback ride. Zeke activates his Zeke as Kai hops on and the 2 quickly clear the gap between them and the robber. The robber sprays mist behind him, confusing them and blinding their sight. Zeke however, quickly uses his Aura sensing skills and dashes across the street. The robber heads through an alleyway, jumping over the cluttered junk, with Zeke catching up fast by running on the wall. The robber quickly forms a mist cloud and bounces off of it to the roofs and keeps running. Zeke slides down the wall and jumps on the closed trash bin, then wall jumps up to the roof to continue the chase. Kai, without being in Sync form, manages to shoot a small sphere that makes the robber stumble after getting hit in the back. Zeke quickly pins him to the ground with Kai picking up the cash register.

 

Zeke: After that Shadow Sun fight, it’s nice to do something small again!

Kai: Yeah, I see what you mean.

 

They head back to the others waiting outside the store doors, with the robber with their hands behind their back.

 

Zeke: We’re back!

Kai: And we got the cash register!

 

The other shoppers in the store applaud.

Cardin: (in thought) Th-they got it back!? Powerless Freak and electrified head!?

 

Kai hands the cash register back to the worker.

 

Worker: Oh, man! Thank you!

Kai: Heh! No problem ma'am

Zeke: Can we test if it's ok by buying our stuff!

Worker: Sure thing!

 

They purchase their movies, and extend their gratitude to the worker as they walk out with their stuff. And as they walk down the sidewalk, an old man in a brown vest and red tie, with a brown fedora on his head with a face of charm and wisdom watches them from afar.

 

Kruger: They rushed all over the city to catch a simple thief, even after a mission against Shadow Sun  that left them exhausted.

 

He holds his hat to his chest.

Kruger: Hm, I'm certain they're the ones who can stop…  them.
