Chapter 14 - Easy Breathing

 

The dust slowly settles as the sunset bleaches the sky. After taking in the battle they just finished, Aura dashes over to Kai, with Talin back in his emblem pocket, laying on the ground in a small crater next to Wallus. Ano and Saiko help Kai up.

 

Saiko: Is… is it over?

Kai: H-he's not moving…

Zeke: We knocked him out!

Ano: I… Can’t believe it.

Saiko: I never thought we’d see the day someone like him would be out-cold.

Captain John: Well, good work everyone! Now… who’s gonna carry him?

Saiko: I can't carry him back.

Zeke: We can tie him up and get someone else, it's not like he can move.

Saiko: Alright, I'll use my thread to make sure he can’t move.

 

Ano and Zeke struggle to push Wallus upward, and Saiko ties his arms behind his back. The team tiredly walk down the street and see Hera still sitting in front of Fanz.

 

Hera: There you guys are! Did you win? 

Captain John: We did, indeed! How’s the company been?

Hera: He’s been real quiet, don’t think he’s a people person…

 

She starts to get teary eyed and rushes over to hug all of her friends.

 

Hera: Ah! I’m so happy! Our first big mission! This is amazing!

Saiko: Yes, it really is.

Kai: Gack! I appreciate the love, but please let go! My arms!

Hera: Oh! Sorry about that!

 

A portal is formed behind the group, and out comes Lucas, Ruby and Team Beast.

Captain Rose: Hello, everyone! I trust you did your parts?

Hera: Captain Rose! Guys!

Captain John: Yeah, too bad you missed all the fun.

Captain Rose: Tell me about it.

Saiko: Captain Rose! We managed to beat one of the Shadow Sun members, but We couldn't carry him back here! I have him wrapped in Thread as he's unconscious. 

Captain Rose: I'll go get him, the rest of you can rest.

 

She walks past the team, placing a hand on Hera and Saiko’s shoulders, acknowledging all of their efforts.

 

Zeke: Oh! There’s another Shadow Sun guy on the top floor in that building down there!

Ruby: I’ll portal to him, I need someone to come with.

Hera I’ll come!

The 2 head through the portal.

 

Lucas: I'm so proud of you all! Not even just proud, astonished! You all pulled this mission off with great results!

Saiko: Unfortunately, sir… We let one of them get away.

Lucas: What matters is what you managed to do, don’t dread what you couldn’t

Kai: We all had each other's backs, that's the only way we pulled this off.

 

The 2 return through the portal, with Hera carrying an unconscious Slain.

 

Hera: Got him! He was still holding onto his Sync after it shrunk back down!

Kai: He… put up a good fight, i’ll say that much.

 

Saiko ties him up.

 

Hera: Hey, Saiko. I think you and I make a pretty good team up! We should train together, sometime!

Saiko: Oh, sure. 

Ano: Zeke, i gotta admit, you were pretty sharp out there.

Zeke: T-thanks!

Kai: All of you guys did great! I can’t believe we really managed to do this.

Captain John: Yeah, yeah. Congrats to all of you. This feeling’s gonna be common, don’t worry. 

 

Ruby points to behind everyone, and everyone turns around to see Captain Rose walking back empty handed.

 

Saiko: Where’s the guy?

Captain Rose: When i got there, I saw dissolving strands of Thread on the ground. He must’ve woken up, torn the Thread off and ran off

 

Silence fills the air.

 

Lucas: You all already did exceptional work today, do not let a setback hault your victory.

 

Saiko glances at Kai, who looks bacl. And the 2 share a smile, agreeing to what Lucas said.

Captain Rose holds the 2 Shadow Sun members in her vine arms and walks through a new portal with Ruby and Lucas that Ruby formed, telling Beast to wait in the car. Beast gives their congrats and goodbyes and walks off.

 

Captain John: Well, this was fun, but i;m beat. Let's get some grub and go home kids, im proud of ya.

 

Aura starts walking to the SUV.

 

Zeke: Hey Kai,  I noticed the blue stuff on your face was glowing brighter than usual, did Talin help?

Kai: No, actually. Everything just kinda clicked in the moment.

Talin: I think we’ve gone closer after today, don’t you?

Kai: …Yeah, actually! Somehow, i understand you… and this ability more. If this is the type of strength we can pull off, then we’re gonna work hard to earn it!

Ano: … Oh, yeah. Why did you scream Noah's name during the battle?

Kai: What? Oh, I kinda promised Noah i’d name a cool special move after him.

Zeke: That name sounds stupid

Kai: What? It's a kick that's too narrow to dodge! It's a perfect name!

Saiko: My sister would kill me if I did something like that

Kai: Noah would’ve killed me if I didn't do something like that!

Captain John: Next time you come up with a special move, consult me before you name it.

 

In an empty warehouse, Wallus walks through the hallway holding his stomach, dragging across the wall. He opens a door to a small room and is immediately helped to a chair by Xaylan. While Quin stands against the while with a foot on it, and Naria sits on the floor.

 

Xaylan: Wallus! I'm glad you're alive! Naira, get Sui and tell her to bring healing supplies

Naria nods silently and leaves the room

Wallus: Xaylan, I'm sorry, Fanz and Rico, even Slain, they got taken

Quin: They'll be fine, the peasants in prison won't hold a candle to them.

Xaylan: I see… What's important is that your ok, our comrades won't stay in confinement forever.

Quin: Sui won’t be happy about losing her little toys.

Xaylan: We can rebuild. But with Fanz in there custody, we’ll have to find all new hideouts that can’t be compromised.

Wallus: Abandoned Block is still on the map, after those anti-guardian people got found out.

Quin: I still have the suggestion that we blackmail. Maybe set up bases in other Districts?

Xaylin: We can’t afford to stretch ourselves, right now… Let’s just do what we can for now. I’ll work on developing a back-up plan Sui pitched to me.

 

Xaylan looks out the window to look at the moon.

 

Xaylan: Talin… I will not give up on you.

Back In Aura's house, the team have cleaned themselves up and set food on the kitchen counter with chairs scooted up to the counter.

 

Kai: Woah, this all smells delicious!

Talin: A lot of this food looks odd, i’ve never seen so many dishes i don’t recognize. Those stick things look familiar though.

Kai: the funnel cake sticks? 

Talin: Yeah, I must've liked them.

Kai: I don’t blame you, they taste great!

Talin: No need to rub it in.

Captain John: A special dinner for a job well done! And a nice excuse to not cook for tonight.

 

Everyone starts digging in, Zeke jokingly pokes Kai’s mouth with a funnel cake stick.

 

Captain John: Y'know. When I first chose you kids, i thought I was gonna put up with brats trying to find new ways to get themselves killed, I was right, and i gotta say, it’s definitely been interesting so far.

Saiko: That’s in Interesting way of saying that

Zeke: How far do you guys think our grade went up after that mission?

Kai: it has to be at least 3 ranks!

Ano: All the collateral damage might have tanked it a little.

Kai: Oh right, I forgot about that.

Zeke: The sidewalk looked ugly to begin with, anyway.

Ano: You fought on the rooftop for most of the day.

Captain John: You gotta be observant of all the battlefield’s surroundings. After all-

Zeke: Hey Captain John, tell us about how you became a captain!

Captain John: Eh, I'll save that story for later.

Kai: Ah come on, it's a special dinner after all!

Captain John: I can tell a special story of one of my missions in my early days!

Talin: Hm, I wouldn't mind an old tale.

Kai: Same here!

Zeke: Yeah! Do it!

Captain John: Ok, so, there were these guys in the drug business, Right? And they were making deals with this park manager to try a new product, in the middle of summer I-

 

The Captain tells his story to the kids as a blue and pink butterfly flaps around the house in the night.
