Chapter 20: Chapter 19: Shortcuts

The next morning most of us woke up a bit later than usual in order to get some much needed rest.
But luckily everyone is in the best of spirits, that includes those scary looking ducks.

While I'm still discussing how and where to get fresh food and supplies for the journey back home, a familiar fairy just scared the living hell out of everyone.

FLASH

"Eeeeeeeek!" Yes, that scream was me again.

"My god. ROSE! Don't do that!" Sorry, I just had to vent that.

"Sorry to startle you. Oh...you are the rescue team?" Rose asked, looking at the unexpected sight of demonic fairies. Again people introduce themselves, much to my dismay. Rose wants to tell me something...I know it! But I have to be polite and wait.

Rose then walks over to me and says "our goddess has paid us a visit this morning."

"Huh? Which one?"

"What? Eh, Ahena. But that's not important now. I already thanked the Elves for their hospitality, also on your behalf. The goddess asks us to prepare for immediate departure, we have to leave urgently. Apparently the Palace will be evacuated soon. Don't ask me why, but she wants us to go there right now....as in teleporting home."

Birch, the rescue team's leader, felt the need to vent as well. "But....but.....but ..we spent weeks getting here?"

Rose feels sorry for him and says "I know. But these are...eh...divine orders, I guess? Daisy, she asks you to say goodbye to your friends here and prepare to leave at once. She asked me to teleport us all the way home....apparently she has confidence in my <cough> skill." 

"Then why do you look so nervous?" I asked. 

"Why do you think, dumb dumb? GO, quickly!"

I quickly ran to Fern and hugged her. "Thank you for your kind hospitality! I will miss you!"

"Be safe, Daisy. Will you be back?" Fern's question touched my heart....like a reminder.

"I hope so! From the bottom of my heart!" That was the truth, no point in lying to her.

Finch approached us. "Can I join you?"  

I release the embrace and now put my arms around Finch. "Are you sure? It may be quite some time before....."   KISS!   He kissed me!    "Eh...okay, Finch. If you put it like that.....then by all means. Let's go."

Rose instructs the rescue team, Finch and I, to move closer together. The ducks weren't in the best of moods to comply, but after another minute we're ready to go. Rose then says "okay...Daisy, I need lots of your mana for this to work."

"Okay!  Daisy chain to Rose!"   I really felt the energy being drained from myself, making me feel dizzy for a second, but Finch was quick to respond. I'm safe in his arms now. Eh, not Princess-carry style, but just his arms....whatever, nevermind me.

Rose checks her stats and then says "yep, seems we're good to go now." 
While Rose starts the spell I wave goodbye to Fern and my other friends here. "May the goddess guide us all to the Palace where we should hopefully end up: TELEPORT!"

Finch then says: "Daisy, I just couldn't wait for you..........."

FLASH!

........"to return...oh...okay...I guess we have arrived?"

 

And indeed. We're back where all of this started....at the Palace.

Rose seems happy that the teleport worked. 

"My god, Rose. Couldn't you have tried that like on the first day?"

"Hey! It's difficult! I swear! Just be grateful for once!"

"Okay....okay....I believe you. And I am...grateful. I'm just surprised, that's all." I pat her on the shoulder. "Thank you, Rose. Well done."

Birch, the rescue team's leader, felt again the need to vent some frustration. "That....that's it? Just a flash and we're back?"

Rose and I do what we do best. We just shrug and move on, walking towards the entrance.

I see guards running this way, but they quickly understand that we're good people. 
It doesn't take long for my parents and Violet to follow them, and meet us midway to the Palace's entrance.

"Daisy!" Mom decides to ignore etiquette as well and she's hugging the life out of me, right in front of the Palace.

"Mom! We made it!" 

But before she can reply, Violet joins the hug and father, being the last to arrive, simply joins the group hug. Rose waited, but I pulled her into the hug, she's part of the family now too as far as I'm concerned.

After properly greeting my family, Fleur approaches us.

I hug her as well and ask her to take care of something, and she promises to do exactly that.
She smiled and patted me on the back. 

"Fleur, we still need to send a message to the guildmaster that we have arrived here safe and sound. And make sure he gets his gold coin. Oh, and the team here desperately needs to rest."

Fleur simply smiles, it's just another day at work for her. "No worries, Princess, allow me to take care of it."

"Thank you Fleur!" 

My parents then thank the rescue team for their efforts....even if their return trip was ....unexpected. They will be properly compensated. They bow to us and follow Fleur to get some well deserved rest. 
Poor people, I pity them. All this way....well, that's life.

Rose, Finch and I now follow my parents inside the Palace and into the same room where I first met them.

Tea is served at lightning speed while Finch doesn't know where to look. All this luxury, yeah I know, I'm no fan of it either.

"Mother, father, this is Finch. Someone very important to me."

"Greetings, I am Finch, Daisy was a welcome guest in our Clan. She allowed me to accompany her here." 

After their introductions are over, we all squeeze together on the sofa. Finch to my left and Rose to my right. Mom keeps switching her gaze between Finch and I. Something tells me she already knows..... 

Mom then seems to relax and looks at me, a tear in her eye. Only now does she register what I'm wearing. "Daisy, sweetie, what are you wearing?"

"Huh? This? Fern gave this dress to me. Isn't it pretty? It's comfortable too!"

"Eh...it certainly is....different. And Rose too. I believe you should enjoy a good bath later on. I'm sure we'll have something appropriate for mister Finch as well."

I have to set this straight. "Mom, please understand. Wonderful people have cared for us. These clothes were shared when we needed them. We left wearing pajamas, remember? They are important to us."

I see mom blushing from embarrassment, realizing that she should have been a bit more careful around Finch. "Of course, honey. We will....wash them for you, alright? Nothing will happen to them, I promise."

Then without warning I feel a nervous breakdown coming up, forcing me to cry nonstop for a few minutes. Mom wanted to console me, but Finch and Rose both beat her to it.

"Are we really back home?" I said. "I don't think I believe it yet."

"It's true, honey. But we can't stay here very long." Father said.

I look at him with teary eyes. "Huh? Why?" I don't get it. This...isn't over yet?

Mom then takes over from father. "Daisy, you sent us that emergency message, remember?"

"Oh....right..I forgot. They are coming this way, aren't they?"

Father says "unfortunately yes. Your message gave us some much needed time to evacuate people and prepare our defenses. But we will have to evacuate the Palace in the morning. First reports indicate that demons will strike tomorrow at nightfall."

After having endured a mandatory bathing session where Rose now smells like....oranges....we spent the remainder of the day catching up. Rose and I are wearing royal dresses again and Finch, we'll he's quite the gentleman. But it doesn't suit him. I can see it in his eyes. He must see it in mine too.

 

Evening is approaching. It will be dark within the hour. Days sure seem to pass quickly. While daydreaming, looking out into the gardens, mom stealthily approached me.

"Daisy, dear?"

"Yes, mom?" I didn't look at her. Just kept staring outside. This place.....is not compatible with me. I'm no Princess. I don't know a single thing of etiquette, nor do I care.

"You seem far away." 

"Yes, mom. I'm happy to be home again. But a lot has happened. It will take some time before I'll look anything remotely royal." I glanced at her, then looked outside again.

"I know, dear. That's fine. Having you back, that's important. Don't worry about anything else. You and Rose experienced so much while still so young. And you....it must have been difficult."

I look at her with teary eyes. "You have no idea, mom. Just look at me. We aren't even demonic fairies anymore."

"Yes, sweetie, you already told us in your messages. But seeing it.....was still surprising to say the least. But....how close are you with that...Finch guy?"

"Huh? Please don't tell me you don't like him?" I almost begged her.

"I see. Exactly the response I anticipated. Your emotions are easy to read, dear. But....a wild fairy? Are you sure?" Her expression was motherly, kind, not what I had expected.

There was a hopeful expression on my face again. "So.....you don't mind?"

"No dear, he seems like a....ooffff" At this point I embraced my mom, squeezing her like a lemon. 

"Thank you, mom." I released the embrace.

"Again, don't worry so much. Violet will one day inherit the throne, assuming we survive these demons. And I'm sure that you and Finch can find happiness here as well."

"Mom....you don't understand. I don't even want..."

 

FLASH.

I'm again in the winter wonderland. And the goddess seems serious again. Oh no...not again.

"I'm sorry to pull you away from that important conversation, Daisy. But it's time. The demons are here. They are going to attack within the hour. Be safe, my little one." FLASH. 

"Daisy!! Daisy!" Mom keeps shaking me, until she sees me lock my eyes onto hers.

The others ran over to us as well.

I shake my head to clear my thoughts. I simply shout to everyone who wants to hear it.
"They're coming! The demons are attacking NOW! The goddess told me. They're here!"

My father runs out of the room, probably going to assemble the generals and whatnot. Nothing for a Princess to worry about.

We sit down on the sofa again, I'm trembling from an adrenaline rush. It's going to happen. I bet these demons aren't anything like the rookies I have encountered before. We're dead...sooo dead.

 

Before mother can speak to me, father rushes back inside.
"Everyone OUT.  NOW. We're evacuating the Palace. Follow me. Leave everything, don't take anything with you. We will relocate to the Frostcall residence."

We just leave the tea on the table....untouched....all staff...everyone is leaving the Palace.

I'm still shaking, but Finch's arm around me somehow comforts me.
We follow everyone outside into the front gardens. 

At this time, there are no Princesses, no Kings or Queens. We're all just a bunch of fairies trying to flee from the approaching demons.

Father orders us to wait here until the carriage arrives....but we're too late.

Many fairies wearing uniforms are heading towards where the demons are supposed to be. 
It's already dark and the smell of fear is in the air. Nobody says a single word. 

We see lightning flashes, but without the thunder. Those must be magic attacks. I can't watch, I put my head on Finch's shoulder and he takes me in his warm, safe arms. Safe, but for how long?

"Aaaaahhhh!" 

"Bzzzzzzzz" 

"Vossssssshhh" 

All kinds of weird magical sounds reach us from ahead. Then I see a soldier, right in front of our big white fence...he changes into thousands of little light particles and...just vanishes.

I look at Rose, unable to even ask what that was. But she understood my question. Saw it in my eyes.
With a sad voice she said "Daisy....that happens when we die...."

At this point father is tired of waiting for the carriage. He orders the Rescue Team to protect the royal family. But it's even too late for that.

The Palace. My home away from Earth.....just got attacked.
