"Young Lady Mo, why don't you come with me? There's a guest residence that you can stay in for the night."

"Go where?"

"My family residence."

"No, I- I couldn't impose."

"Please, I insist."

"O- okay."

Gongsun Li led Mo Xiaodan through the streets of Nanjing. Eventually, they came upon a door. Overheard was a large wooden plaque. The brass characters read: Magistrate Residence.

"Magistrate Residence?" she asked.

"Yes, my father is the capital's Magistrate."

She retreated back a step, shaking her head. "I- I shouldn't be here."

"It's okay, Young Lady Mo."

"T- that fox demon from when you were young, did you kill her back then?"

"No, I was too little. But I found her again when I grew up. She's dead now and will never hurt anyone ever again."

Mo Xiaodan shook. She turned tail and fled, running back through Nanjing's streets.

Where's the gateway? Where's the gateway? Where's the gateway?

She searched high and low but couldn't find a gateway. As she turned one corner, she tripped and fell to her knees. Tears welled in her eyes as her shoulders began to heave. Salty droplets fell to the ground.

Soft footsteps approached. "Young Lady Mo, is everything alright?"

She continued to sob. Gongsun Li took off his outer coat, squatted down, and draped it over her shoulders.

"It's chilly out. You'll catch a cold if you stay out too long."

"I just want to go home," she murmured.

"Where is home for you?"

"Too far away."

If you really knew, you'd kill me.

Just then, there was a ear-piercing scream coming from nearby. Both of their heads shot up.

"What was that?"

"Let's go look," he said.

"You want me to go with you?" she asked incredulously.

"It's safer with me than you alone."

"Oh."

They ran in the direction of the scream. When they ducked down a side alley, they saw a person lying on the ground.

"Stay there," Gongsun Li commanded.

He walked forward and examined the body. It was a woman in her mid-twenties. There was a deep gash across her chest. He respectfully turned his head away.

"Young Lady Mo, will you come here?"

She inched forward. "Who is it?"

"A woman. Can, can you tidy her? I shouldn't."

Understanding, Mo Xiaodan nodded. She covered the woman's chest better and closed her eyes.

"Was she human?"

"Demons return to their true forms after they die. So yes. She was a human."

"Oh. What happened then?"

"It looks like she was attacked by some demon."

Mo Xiaodan began to back away. I can't be here any longer. I hope Royal Father or Lord Qin finds me soon.

"Young Lady Mo, I know it's hard to accept. It's also gruesome. I need to report this to my father." He turned to leave. "Come with me."

She shook her head. "No, I- I need to calm down."

Without a word, Gongsun Li nodded and left. Once he was gone, Mo Xiaodan looked up.

"Come out, whoever you are."

A figure moved in the shadows. "I thought I smelled demon blood. Why are you with that demon hunter?"

"Demon hunter?"

"Yeah. The Magistrate's first son is a well-known demon hunter here in Nanjing."

"Do you know how I can get back to the Demon Realm?"

"You don't know?"

"Know what?"

"It's easy to get here from the Demon Realm. To go back is much more difficult. Normal demons like me can't do it."

"Then who can?"

"As far as I've heard, only the Demon King and the Demon Lord have the ability to create a gateway back."

So even I can't. Great.

"Why'd you kill that human?"

"Because I could."

"Don't you know it's because of demons like you that mortals hate us?!" Mo Xiaodan screamed. "Why can't you just leave the humans alone?"

"Do they leave us alone?! Look at that demon hunter you were following! He seeks us out and hunts us down!"

Mo Xiaodan shook her head. "There has to be a better way. This can't continue."

"And who's going to change anything? The Demon King sits on his big throne in the Demon Realm, perfectly safe! But what about those of us who can't get home? He sealed off the gateway almost eighteen years ago now. Those of us who are stuck here can never get home because the Demon King sure as hell isn't going to come here just to re-open the gateway."

My Royal Father sealed the gateway? Almost eighteen years ago? W- what if he sealed it just before I was born? Did he abandon these demons here to keep the mortals out of the Demon Realm? To keep me safe? Royal Father... what have you done?

"W- what if I said I could change things? Get the Demon King to re-open the gateway to let every demon in the Mortal Realm go home?"

The other demon scoffed. "Yeah, right. How could anyone here have any sway with the high and mighty Demon King?"

I shouldn't reveal myself. But what else can I say to get this demon to listen to me?

Deciding to risk it, she opened her mouth. If I can't trust my demons, then I don't deserve to be their queen.

"I am Mo Xiaodan, Crown Princess of the Demon Realm."

To prove it, she revealed her true form. Her beauty increased ten-fold, and her eyes became miniature versions of the Red Sun. The other demon gasped.

"The Demon King even abandons his own child here?!"

"No, I came here by accident. My Royal Father might not even know that I'm here."

Before their conversation could continue, voices echoed from the main street. People drew closer to them.

"Here, right over here was the body!" Gongsun Li's voice drifted up.

"See what I mean?" the other demon hissed. "A demon hunter!"

"Just here, down this alley!"

The Magistrate's men noticed Mo Xiaodan's figure. "The demon! It's right there!"

Mo Xiaodan spun around. She noticed Gongsun Li just turned the corner.

"No wait!" he cried. "She's not a demon!"

But an arrow had already been notched and fired. Mo Xiaodan began a spell to cast a shield, but it was taking too long. The other demon dashed in front of her.

"No!" Mo Xiaodan roared. The arrow struck through the demon's body.

Rushing forward, Mo Xiaodan caught her. "No, no, no. Please, no."

"Save the others, Your Highness," she choked out quietly. "Open the gateway. Stay away from that demon hunter."

Mo Xiaodan watched as the life left her. She returned to her fox form. Gongsun Li approached.

"Another fox demon," he snarled.

"She saved my life. Your men had shot an arrow. She dashed in front of it."

"Young Lady Mo, one good deed does not outshine the bad."

"Why are you so pessimistic?" she shrieked.

"This world is a cruel place. It'll change you eventually."

"Then I don't want to live in this world."

Thinking she was going to do something, Gongsun Li cried out. ""Wait!"

"What?"

"Y- you aren't going to do anything?"

"I just want to go home, First Young Master Gongsun."
