"How are they functioning now?"

"Everything seems to be in order, Doctor. It is astounding that the orange-haired boy is still able to function despite the dire condition of his body. He was perilously close to amputating three of his limbs. Unfortunately, it seems he will likely be confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life."

"I see."

Knock knock

"Ah, that must be their families. Did you not inform them that they were unable to visit yet?"

"Yes I did doctor, but, it seems like it has not worked..."

What am I experiencing... My head feels quite dizzy.

Urgh, I can't keep my head up.

"Doctor, he has awakened!"

"Young boy, welcome back!"

What...

"Where am I? What has occurred? Wait... Where is Thomas!"

"You mean the orange-haired kid? Right there, in the other corner of the room."

Sigh, I am relieved that he is unharmed.

"You should rest for a bit longer, we have contacted your family and they are already here."

My family...

Knock knock knock

Sigh, "Doctor, perhaps I should allow them entry. It can't do any harm, correct?"

"Are you feeling somewhat better, Dante?"

"Yes, I am alright."

"Very well, let them in."

Wait... I have yet to fully process this situation, I... How will I explain this to them?

"D- Dante..."

Wait, my mother is here? How is that possible...? Oh no...

"Mother..."

"DANTE!!!"

My mother threw herself at me, not wasting a moment.

"M- Mother, it hurts."

I don't believe my voice is registering with her currently, she is crying profusely... It is evoking an emotional response in me.

"Dante, you IDIOT!"

Madison...

"Ma'am, please let go of Dante, he has not fully recovered yet."

Sniff, "Yes, doctor..."

"Dante, you broke our promise!!! You promised me not to worry your mother, hours went by and you haven't gotten back to our house, do you understand how worried she was, even your siblings?!"

"Fathe-"

"SHUT UP! Look what you've done!"

"Honey, please, calm down..."

"You should have just died Dante, you good for nothing! Only worrying and slowing us down, you bloody rat!"

Why... Why is he acting this way towards me, I did not want this to happen. Tears began streaming down my cheeks, I attempted to wipe them away, but my entire body hurt so much that I was unable to lift my arm.

"Dad, calm down for god sake! Do you not see the state Dante is in right now? How is any of your doing making mom feel better? You need to go outside."

"Are you talking back to me, Madison?"

Smack

"JOHN! Why!!"

"Never talk back to me, do you want me to make you sleep outside?"

Sniff, "N- No..."

"What do you think you are doing, sir?"

My father became incensed... Grasping the doctor's vest. "Don't make me lash out at you."

*Sob*, "Mommy..."

"Oh, Noah, come here..." she soothed, as two police officers entered the room, reacting to the commotion caused by my father.

"Sir, please come with us," the officers requested, as my father surprisingly relinquished his grip on the doctor, and walked out of the room with them.

"Dante, are you all right?" my mother inquired, her solicitous demeanor in stark contrast to the tumultuous events that had just transpired.

"Yes, Mother, I am well." I replied, despite the lingering trauma of the catastrophe.

Moments passed, and the atmosphere in the room had become considerably more tranquil. The doctor produced a notebook and perched himself on the edge of my bed.

"Very well, Dante. Would you be willing to recount the details of the disaster?" he requested, his tone professional and empathetic.

Although I had no desire to relive the harrowing sights I had witnessed, I knew that it was necessary.

"I was with three others, including Thomas. We were traversing various locations, playing around-" I began, but my head still ached fiercely. "Ugh..."

"It appears that you require further rest. Would you mind returning tomorrow? It's almost nighttime as it is," the doctor interjected.

"Yes... Let's go, children. I love you, Dante." my mother said, her voice choked with tears, as she and my sister, Madison, helped her out of the room. It was heart-wrenching to see my mother so frail, with my father nowhere in sight.

"Mother..." I called out, my voice barely audible.

"I will be back tomorrow, okay? You rest well for me." she replied, as Madison added, "Take care, Dante." her right cheek bearing a red mark.

I swore to myself that I would not cause them any more pain, for that was what the Devil had promised me.

As the final rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains, I was on the verge of sleep when I heard a commotion outside my room.

"Nobody is allowed to enter- Oh, my lord!" a voice exclaimed.

"Where are the victims located?" a second voice asked.

"I will guide you! But please, be mindful of their condition." the first voice responded.

I opened my eyes to see a group of four people, all attired in opulent clothing, their garments of a darker hue. They were speaking with the doctor, and one of them, a girl I recognized from when Thomas and I had been outside, was looking at me.

Are they here for us? Why would individuals of such high social standing be interested in us?

"If you've understood what I said, please proceed to the room, my lord." the doctor instructed.

"Thank you for allowing us to visit." the man replied.

"There they are, hello, Dante."

Does this man know my name? The doctor must have informed him.

"Hello..." I responded, unsure of what to say.

"You must be Dante. We've heard about the unfortunate events that have occurred to you and your friend. His name is Thomas, correct?" the man inquired.

The woman standing next to him must be his wife, I surmised, sensing a powerful presence emanating from her.

"How is you feeling?"

The manner in which the boy spoke was peculiar... They all appeared to be a familial unit, exuding a certain charisma.

The man placed his hand on my abdomen, and I could immediately feel the pressure. My body seemed to have become highly sensitive.

"You must have undergone a harrowing experience, my boy. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Dennis, the patriarch of my wife and children whom you see before you. We are of noble birth, and word of your companion's valiant efforts to save you has spread far and wide. Many have dubbed him "The Brave Soul."

It was difficult for me to comprehend that my plight had become the subject of widespread notoriety. "People have gotten known of... What happened...?"

The lady I remembered approached me.

"Hello, Dante. I am Esther. It is a pleasure to see you awake. Nice to meet you."

"Likewise..."

Her name was fitting for one as beautiful as her. I couldn't help but gaze at her long, silver hair, her sweet expression and her captivating light brown eyes, which would have been even more striking in the sunlight.

I chided myself for entertaining the notion that someone such as her would ever take notice of me.

Her mother addressed me,

"It is truly wonderful to see you alive and well. I am still in disbelief that we have the opportunity to meet one of the subjects of the story. Where is the other boy?"

"I believe that is him over there, mother."

Indeed, it was Thomas.

"He bears a striking resemblance to him. That must be Thomas, always astute as ever, Sebastian."

"Indeed."

He seemed quite self-assured.

Dennis turned his attention back to me, I surmised that he was also curious as to the details of my ordeal.

"Where is your family?"

My family...

"They had visited me previously, but were compelled to depart. They will visit me again tomorrow."

"I see... If my recollection serves me correctly, you are employed at our knife manufacturing company."

Could it be? Was I speaking with the owner of the company?

"I do indeed work at a knife factory...

"The one located in Castle Combe?"

It was difficult to believe.

"Yes, Castle Combe."

"I knew it! It is truly remarkable that you are one of our workers.

"It is getting late, my dear. We must put Sebastian to bed soon. We will visit Dante again another day. He requires rest as well."

"You are correct. Dante, please ensure that you get adequate rest. We will converse further soon."

"Of course, Mr. Dennis."

Esther seemed unable to take her eyes off of me, I wondered if there was something on my face. Eventually, she finally turned away and joined the others as they left the room.

"Farewell, Dante. Take care."

"You as well Esther."

I must have needed sleep to alleviate my headache. Thomas was still sleeping, I eagerly awaited his awakening.
