Chapter 2: Chapter Two : Death

     It was just a typical weekday busy weekend. 

     As she made her way through the transparent glass door, the welcome scent of coffee wafts through the air, calling her weary legs to take a rest. A metallic table reflects the blowing sun, almost blinding her for seconds. As she takes her seat, her full attention focuses on the TV screen as they reported that a fully grown-up man, found dead in a terrible hogtied position had been burnt to death with an open cut on his throat in a small room in the abandoned building. The people who lived nearby that building smelled awful and stumbled on his remains and alerted the police.

     They also noted that over the past three months, the same accident happen again. All the victims had shared a similar death, the killer had open cuts on their throats and burnt their bodies to death.  Dental records determined that all the victims were grown up and were important people to the government that work in special service. Investigations are continuing to find the murderer to bring justice to society.

    "Well, good luck finding her, she smirked as she heard the sound waves of people's sirens surrounding the near building.

      The sun had heated the chair and it feels so comforting and warm. She looked around looking for the waitress, the need for caffeine is now consuming her genius mind.

    The female waitress wearing black dress pants and a white shirt with a black vest wrapped with a tie. Her heels are so impractical for someone who will be on their feet all day, but she knows they make her look amazing. 

     "Her feet will be aching later as mine are now, Xiyi thought silently.

     The female waitress's face is fixed into a false smile. She has simple makeup, pulls a pencil from behind her ear, and goes through the routine questions she asks every customer that visits the cafe.

    ''I will have two double espressos and one piece of dark chocolate.

    The female waitress write down the order and smiled at Xiyi as she turned around to do her job. 

     The sounds of birds swooping in from every direction made her head turn to see what was happening outside the cafe. The birds swoop around hoping for a stray crumb to feast on. The pavements are covered with squabbling and pecking pigeons. They fight over the smallest speck of what may, or may not even be food. Some children run at them, squealing with pleasure as they scramble off into the air, leaving their food behind.  

     The weather suddenly changed. The sky was tar-black and the large clouds were moving towards the near building she was in. She heard a tapping on the window and then it become a pitter-patter. People ran for cover outside and umbrellas were opened as the clouds spat out their beads of water. Puddles began plinking as the rainfall become heavier. The roofs of cars danced with spray and she could hear the murmuring of the rain through the window.

    It sounded like the buzzing of angry bees. After a couple of waiting for a while, Xiyi finally has her two double espressos. The smell of roasted coffee beans saturates the air. She traces the top of the mug with her finger, around in endless circles waiting for her drinks to cool a little bit.

     The noise from the rain and the traffic invades her thoughts. Lorries making deliveries even on this rainy day, clattering and banging as the drivers angrily empty their cargo without care. The heavy smell of exhaust fumes fills her nostrils and she long to inhale the sweet scent of her coffee. The street seems to be getting busier even on rainy days.

     When she was about to take the first sip of her cup of coffee, she saw something in a corner nearby building. Well, that's not something but an animal. A cat to be exact. A small golden-fur cat bleeds out. The cat was tired and laying there motionless. She can't tell if the cat was dead or not.  Xiyi tried to ignore it and enjoy her coffee but something is bothering her.

     She looked outside the window again, only to notice that the cat was still alive they tried to stand up but because of the injury, they fall instantly. The cat just laying there probably accepted their fate and shivered in coldness waiting for their time to end.

    Xiyi put her mug down and sigh heavily, she stands up ignoring the looks of other customers who have nothing to do, and get out of the cafe to look at the golden-fur cat. She can't help but imagine the cat's pains because she was once had been in that situation when no one willing to help her. 

     She removed her black leather jacket and wrapped it around the cat's body. She took her small white cotton napkin from her pocket and pressed it on the cat's leg to make a wrap to stop the bleeding. 

      She carefully hold the cat in her arms and started walking for looking, at a nearby veterinarian's clinic. She look down at the cat, she was awake and they look at her with shiny green eyes. She smiled sincerely at the cat as she tried to tell the cat that everything is going to be just fine.

     "Maybe it's not too bad to keep you around as my companion since I am lonely", she suggests.

      However, she didn't look around her surroundings and heard someone yelling at her. She look at the source of the noise and noticed that the middle-aged woman is shouting at her but because of the sound of rainfall, she couldn't hear the word that the woman is trying to say. 

      She has that horrible expression on her face Xiyi tried to ignore her and walked right away. As she turned around,  Xiyi saw something coming toward her but she can't see anything because beads of rainfall covered her eyes. 

      As instantly, she saw something and her heart almost stopped. Everything looked so slow. There was a large truck ramming its way toward her. The truck driver had no time to react and probably had not even gotten on his break when he lost control of the truck he was driving.

      She saw how terrified the driver was but all she is thinking is about the cat. What is happening when she tried to save a cat? All she was thinking about is that she had to protect the cat. As the truck suddenly swerved and rammed her, she hugged the cat not too tightly to make sure her body covered the cat fully from the big truck.

      As soon as the truck hit her body, she felt a sudden intense spike of pain through her body. With everything she has been through while training to become a perfect assassin, this is the second time she felt grave pain that causes she cried because of painlessness. Everything is slow-moving.

     Xiyi then realized she was laying on road, she turned her head around to make sure the cat was alright. When she saw that the cat is fine, she felt relieved. She laughed silently until she cough blood from her mouth.

    Was she going to die in this alley, having accomplished absolutely nothing for all her work? 

    "I guess this is the end for me, she muttered in a low tone.

    It stopped raining and it was good weather after. As she lay down, she saw a beautiful rainbow facing her from up there. She never expected that the last thing she saw was the scenery of the rainbow. it's felt strange because all of her life, she thinks that the last thing she saw when she died was the face of her old foe and thought that she tragically died because a truck hit her. She doesn't feel anything at all but she's depressed that the fact she won't have an empire or anything that she could leave behind.

      She lifts her hand as if she could grasp anything just by doing that.

      If I have one more chance, I promise I will do it better this time.

     If I have more chances I swear that I will change this world into a better world. 

      If I have one more chance, I will-------

     It's a hopeless wish because she knew humans can only live once and die once. There's no way another life another death. It's the law of nature. It's her fate that has been written that way.

   "Meow, the cat purr as they lick her face.

   "I'm just thankful that you are alive, kitty an----

    Xiyi coughed blood again and pet the cat as they look at her sadly.

      "Goodbye, kitty.

      She looks at the clouds again, closes her eyes and it's like warm sun embracing her body. Strangely, she feels amazing and confused at the same time. When she opened her eyes again, the rainbow is already gone and she saw no more after that.
