Two days after a picnic Almark and Morgen decided to leave the winter house.

They didn't have much luggage in the first place. It did not take them long to prepare for the trip.

Wendy and the others were to leave for Galuentor two days after Almark and Morgen departed.

On the morning of their departure, Almark and Morgen went to pay their respects to the servants who had looked after them .

They all seemed to feel a kind of kinship and solidarity with the two boys who had gone through such an event together, and they were sad to say goodbye to them.

Mogen, in particular, had become a popular among the servants, and everywhere he went, they asked him to stay one more day, or two more days, or even longer.

The sight of Morgen and Millette tearfully embracing each other, combined with their appearance, made it seem as if they were saying goodbye to each other's immediate families.

They paid a final visit to Ward.

The old butler greeted them calmly as usual.

"Please come again anytime. We will show you our true hospitality."

Ward smiled at them as he expressed his gratitude.

Before parting, however, Almark had one thing he wanted to make sure Ward knew.

He wasn't sure if he should ask or not, but he couldn't stop thinking about it.

If it was just his imagination, that was fine.

"Mr. Ward, there's something I need to ask you.Э

"Yes, what is it?"

 Ward responded calmly.

"It's about that day," Almark said.

Ward's face darkened a little as Almark said, this

«You mean the day of the raid?”

"Yes."

 Almark nodded.

"Please, speak".

Ward encouraged him to speak.

"The three of us were in the hall that day."

"That's right, wasn't it?"

 Ward nodded.

We heard the attack from outside, and when I explained what had happened, Wendy told .

Almark remembers her words clearly.

'I'm not going to let anyone die again."

Hearing this, Morgen nodded, "Oh, she said that."

'I had so many other things I had to do at the time that I didn't have time to think too deeply about it,...... I thought about it later.'

Ward listens silently to Almark's words.

'No one had been killed by mercenaries yet at that time. And yet, Wendy said, "again"

Almark glanced up into Ward's face.

Looking Ward straight in the eyes, he had a pained expression on his face as he asked his question.

'...... long ago, did Wendy have someone important killed?"

Silence .

Then Ward looked back into Almark's eyes and shook his head.

"No one was killed."

But Ward looked away from Almark in mid-sentence.

He sighed deeply and shook his head again.

“I don't think that I can hide anything from you . Still, I'm amazed you made it that far in that time of danger. ......"

 Ward looked straight at Almark.

'Let me tell you this because you two are the two people in whom I have ...... full trust,....... As you say, the young lady lost a servant who was once as close to her as a sister.”

"Her name was Tilia, and she was brought in as the young lady's friend. She was five years older than the young lady."

Ward took them to a quiet room in the house that was used as a storage room.

Ward began to speak plainly, but with a blank look on his face.

"The two of them were very much different in status, and Tilia herself understood that, but Lady Wendy looked up to Tilia as if she were her own sister. To a casual observer, the two must have looked like sisters.'

"But why?"

“Poison, "

Ward seemed to be trying to speak plainly.

"It was when the young lady was six years old. I won't go into details because it's too much to tell, but Tilia accidentally drank a drink that the young lady was supposed to drink. It was poisoned. ......Tilia was 11 years old when she died."

"Poisoned......."

Morgen muttered in dismay, and Almark frowned as if he had tasted something bitter.

'The lady's sadness was huge ....... She had a high fever of unknown origin and was bedridden for days. Strange things kept happening in the mansion every day during that time."

"Strange things?"

"Yes. The voices of many people could be heard in empty rooms, and the furniture had somehow been rearranged. In retrospect, it may have been a kind of magic by the young lady."

Ward's words reminded Almark of Wendy's magical outburst on the night of the attack.

"Had the death of the girl she loved as a sister put her in a similar state then as she had been that night?"

'...... have you found out who did it?"

"I found out right away. I did not actually see him, but he was a man who had entered the mansion as a gardener. ...... He was a mercenary from the north."

 "A mercenary from the north."

The pain that once again struck Almark's heart was like a knife cutting through his heart.

(Is it also a mercenary from the north?)

(Had the mercenaries from the north killed someone Wendy cared about?)

"The man couldn't escape, was cornered, and took his own life. In the end, we never found out why he wanted to kill the young lady."

(They don't know why Wendy's life was targeted.)

(......It's the same as this time.)

The strange coincidence left Almark with an uneasy feeling in his heart.

"The fever had broken, and even after she woke up, the young lady was still in a state of great depression. She never left her room and was either crying or in a haze ...... every day. She closed her heart to everyone in the house, including lord . Elmond and his wife."

"Wendy, that's what happened to her.""

 Almark muttered.

He wonder if he should have not asked this question .

He asked himself, and felt like covering his ears.

Ward showed no emotion in response to Almark's question, but continued on in a calm manner.

"It's been like that for days, for months,....... No one could do anything about it. It was only after a visit from that man the young lady regained her energy."

"That man ......"

 Morgen repeated.

 Ward nodded.

Yes,Mr. Yorog, the headmaster of the Nork Magic Academy."
