Chapter 32: 32. Unwanted Becomes The Wanted

Nathaniel opened his jacket and threw it onto his bed. He was about to open his shirt as well when a knock at the door stopped him. He huffed in annoyance and reached for the door. "Yes?"

"Mr. Astor?" The one at the door inquired. He was carrying a heavy pile of books.

Nate nodded in response.

"Here. They've been sent by President Windsor." The guy handed over the pile to him.

"Where's the bill?" he asked.

"Uh no. They have been paid for already. Just take it, man. They're killing my hands."

Nate accepted the books and closed the door with his feet. He checked them and found out that all of them were related to their healer training. He felt bad that Mr. Windsor was putting so much effort.

Had it been two years ago, he would have felt happy knowing that someone was rooting for him. A healer was what he had wanted to become since his childhood, along with being an Alpha. He had many plans for his pack. One of them being, making Pack Ziram the pack which produced as many academically skilled individual as the entire werewolf kingdom required. He had dreamt to fulfill this motive of his with his mate by his side as the rightful Luna of his pack.

But now, here he was. A mateless wolf, who had given up on his position as well as his dreams and motives. That is what the loss of mate does to a werewolf. That is what Persephone did to him.

Although Sean had finally decided to make Ariana realize his feelings towards her, he didn't intend to make her uncomfortable. So he tried to change the topic. "You know, I'm grateful that you and Nate will be there to help me navigate the werewolf world."

Ariana was still not over what had happened just some minutes before. However, on the mention of the werewolf world, her attention shifted pretty quickly. "We won't be there with you. We are never going back there." She answered harshly.

"Huh?" Sean was confused.

"Yes. We have nothing to go back for. At least for me. Nate has his pack and family. But for me, I have thousand reasons not to go back."

"Why are you becoming a healer then?"

"We won't. Nate and I've planned to fail every subject. We shall just become doctors and live in human world only."

Sean took time to process everything. He then replied, "Oh... I totally understand."

On the inside, his heart was bursting with joy. One of his major concern was Ariana going back to her world and being weak at the very first sight of her mate. Seeing her determination to stay away from her toxic family and Xavier, he was relieved. He swore to himself that he would always keep Ariana happy, unlike the people from her past.

"Your phone's ringing." Ariana poked his arm.

"Oh..." He picked up the phone. "Yes, mom?"

"Okay. I'll be home soon." He hung up.

Ariana understood what the conversation might have been about. "It's late. We should go now." She suggested.

"Right. Come I'll drop you to your room."

"No, no. It's fine. You go."

"If you say so. Goodnight, Ariana." He gave her a longing look as if he didn't want to part.

"Goodnight, Sean. Drive safe." Ariana smiled.

Sean exited the library from its back door to walk towards parking spot whereas Ariana took the front door and started walking towards dormitory.

Nate didn't realize that tears were running down his face. When his phone began ringing loudly, only then he wiped them off with the back of his hand. He first glanced at the screen to check caller's name and then he picked up.

"Mother." He greeted.

Luna Iria picked up the sadness in her son's voice instantly. However, she couldn't even console him today as she had a different motive to this call. She had to be stern for the sake of their pack. "Nate. I assume you've already gotten the news. How are you?"

She heard a deep sigh at the other end. "Yes, mother. I've got the news already and I'm fine now."

"That's good to know. Anyways, now that the wretched girl is out, you can carry on your duties without any disturbance. When shall you come back, my child?"

"What? What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about your duty towards Pack Ziram, Alpha Nathaniel Caius Astor."

"You seem to have forgotten, mother. I've passed down my title to Ivory." Nate whispered, defeated.

"It doesn't work that way, Nate!" Luna Iria hissed. "Ivory isn't capable of ruling the pack. She wasn't raised to become an Alpha. You were!"

"You weren't either, mum. But you handled our pack very well after papa's illness."

"Because I had gathered many experiences from your father on how to lead a pack, way before his illness took over him. Despite that, I have only been handling Ziram. It hasn't prospered for decades. It wasn't easy for me either. And I don't want that fate for my daughter."

"You're not getting it. It was difficult for you because you were alone. It will be difficult for me as well as for a reason you obviously know." He spat.

"Look mother. Ivory will marry her mate one day. He is of a high rank. They will lead Ziram perfectly and most importantly provide heirs to the pack. And if you haven't thought about it, I would still have to deal with that bastard if I accept my position, even if that wretched girl as you say, is out."

"Nate, my son, listen to me- "

The door flew open. Nate turned around to see who had dared to open the door without his permission even though it wasn't locked. "Ariana, what are you doing here?"

"I just had some things to discuss. But it seems like you're busy. I'll come later-"

"Wait! Is that Alpha Edward's youngest? Give the phone to her, Nate. I want to talk to her. She's the only Bennet I can bear to listen." Luna Iria's voice boomed despite the call not being on speaker.

"Oh my goodness!" Nate sighed in annoyance. What could his mother possibly want to talk with Ariana? He thought. Nevertheless, he handed over the phone to Ariana. "Here."

Ariana took the phone from Nate's hand and put it on speaker. "Greetings, my Luna."

"Hello to you too, dear. I had no idea that you were friends with my Nathaniel. I had the knowledge that you went to the same school as him, but he never regarded you as his friend."

Ariana narrowed her eyes at Nate. They had been friends for quite some months now. And he never bothered to mention? Nate smirked internally. "Mum, you must remember how short Saoirse is. She's so small that my thoughts runs past her without even noticing. So, how could I remember to mention her to you?"

"Saoirse?"

"Oh yes. That's her wolf's name. Good news. The infamous wolfless Alpha-born finally got her wolf. Anyway, you might think her name sounds weird. Wait till you see its spelling. Vowel vomit."

Ariana raised her hand to slap his arm, but missed it by inches. Nate laughed.

Luna Iria's eyes watered upon hearing her son's laugh, not a scoff or a mocking chuckle, but a real genuine laugh.

"Okay, mother. Enough for today. I have to study. Good night." said Nate.

"Goodnight, Luna." Ariana wished.

"Goodnight, my dear. I hope you forgive me for what happened at the dinner table two years ago. I should have taught Ivory better than to conspire against you."

"Wait what?" Nate asked, baffled by the sudden confession.

"It's nothing." Ariana whispered before acknowledging Luna Iria. "You don't have to apologize, Luna. I had already forgotten about it. Ivory had apologized to me later anyway."

"Bless you and your heart, my child. Take care of my Nathaniel while you're there, will you?"

Ariana and Nate shared a look of confusion. "Yes, Luna. I will." Ariana stuttered while answering.

Luna Iria cut off the line. She wiped her misty eyes. What a difference between daughters of the same man! She thought.. And the younger one had gained her wolf too. Was the Moon Goddess finally smiling upon them? Was this her way of indicating something? After all, who would understand the pain of her Nathaniel better than Ariana?
