CHAPTER 9
“Dude, you guys have been killing it out here. It doesn’t look like the same place at all,” I said as I stood in awe of what Jamison and Malthar had been doing on my farm.
“Don’t forget Henegar,” Jamison smiled as he patted the enormous bear. “He’s been doing the hard work.”
I walked over and hugged the big fellow as best as I could. “He’s such a good boy. Yes, he is.”
Henegar huffed and rubbed against me. The grizzly was taking a liking to me, which warmed my heart. I don’t know if we would ever get as close as he was with Koshiro, but that was fine. I loved watching them together.
“We are planting carrots in this field at the moment. We should be finished by dusk,” Malthar said as he pushed a planter. “I am glad I have a reason to use my planter. I tried to purchase some land last year in my village, but it fell through, so I was stuck with farming equipment that I had no use for.”
“What do you mean by it falling through?” I asked as I grabbed some carrot seeds out of the bin.
“Another drow villager outbid me. I couldn’t afford to go any higher. So that was that,” Malthar replied sadly.
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
Malthar nodded. “It is what it is. I’m thankful I found a job here. Thanks again.”
“You’re welcome. I’m sorry you got hurt by those asshole adventurers on your first night. Luckily, that danger won’t be an issue anymore. I sent quite the message at Stonerock. It was a rather disturbing message,” I chuckled with a shrug. “I won’t stand for anyone hurting my friends. That will not happen.”
“That means a lot to me, Chad. Lizardkin are not well respected in the region. We’re seen as vermin. Thank you for treating me differently,” Jamison added.
Malthar patted Jamison on the shoulder. “The drow aren’t very popular with the population either. That’s why we don’t leave our village all that often. The other drow in the village think I’m crazy for venturing out here every day.”
“The girls have said that there is a lot of prejudice from humans toward non-humans. I won’t stand for it in Summerstar. I won’t cut people in half over it, but I will kindly tell them to shut the fuck up,” I looked around at the farm once more proudly. “What can I do? Oh, shit, that reminds me. I got something for you guys.”
I darted over to a drum in the shed behind the restaurant. I lifted the heavy container easily and set it in front of my farm hands’ feet. “The alchemist, I can’t remember his name, whipped this up for me. It is a growth potion that is supposed to make crops grow extremely fast. We’re talking like 48 hours fast. I purchased a lot. He said it won’t expire.”
“By the Nine!” Malthar exclaimed.
Jamison tried to lift the drum but was unsuccessful. “You weren’t kidding. There is a lot of potion in here. I can’t believe you walked it over here with just one hand.”
I pulled a device from my inventory and the farm hands’ eyes widened. “This is a pump thing that attaches to the top of the drum,” I slapped my head and gritted my teeth.
“What’s wrong?” Malthar asked.
“I just realized there needs to be some kind of sprayer to pump the potion into. I’m such an idiot.”

Malthar chuckled. “You are far from an idiot, my friend. I have a couple of sprayers back home that will work.”
“That’s awesome. You can keep all of this equipment in the shed out back. That way, you won’t have to drag it back and forth. I’m going to get a barn built soon. We’ll need a bigger place to put the harvest in.”
“You can get that shed enchanted and it will hold items much like your inventory screen. As a matter of fact, you could just put the harvest in your s-rank infinite inventory,” Jamison informed.
“Enchanted? That never crossed my mind. I’ll check on that. I don’t want to put it all in my inventory, because you guys and the girls need to have access whenever you want.”
Malthar nodded. “That makes sense.”
Jamison raised his right index finger. “Getting something enchanted in this way is very expensive, though.”
“Fortunately, cash flow isn’t much of a problem right now. Those are the perks of being able to carry adventurers through the difficult dungeons, and I’m able to sell all the fancy gear that I loot because I don’t need all that much. I have additional plans for the farm. I want to produce more than just ingredients for my cooking.”
“What do you have in mind?” Jamison inquired with intrigued eyes.
“I want to give the crops to those in need. I don’t plan to ask for any money. I’m thinking about buying some more land over there so I can help more people,” I said as I motioned toward land in the distance. “The mayor owns that land. I’m sure he’ll sell it to me when I tell him what I want to do with it.”
Jamison’s eyes widened, and he looked at Malthar and back at me. “That is really generous. You are such a great man.”
Malthar nodded with tears in his eyes. “I’m speechless.”
“I hope to turn this into a much bigger operation. If you all know of anyone looking for work, you guys can interview them and hire the ones you want. I want you two to be my leads. Your pay will increase, of course.”
“That’s wonderful. I don’t know what to say,” Malthar said excitedly.
“Thank the Nine. This raise will help me upgrade the stables. I’ve been wanting to do that for such a long time.”
“So you guys accept the positions?”
Both of my friends agreed in unison.
I smiled and shook both men’s hands, then walked over to the planter. “Can you show me how to use this thing?”
“Happily,” Malthar replied.
