Chapter Seven- Mysterious Granny

“Jack, come, sit” Elsie prompted jack to a scarlet red sofa, made from the finest material. As he sat, Jack, felt all the tension weighing on his body and mind, evaporate. Was he in heaven?

While he was in this state, Elsie gracefully poured the soup into a dark oak bowl and gently walked with it, and placed it on the table next to where the jack was sitting.

“Jack, don’t get too focused on the chair, hurry, the soup will become cold if you wait too long.” As she said this, Elsie had already poured herself a bowl as well and began eating in a somewhat-rouge manner, again, was this truly befitting of a princess? How could she possibly be a wife in the future with such uncouth actions?

Mortified at the way she was eating, Jack looked down at the soup, surprisingly, it looked and smelled, nostalgic.

(This couldn’t be) jack thought to himself.

“Chicken Soup!” he let out a cheerful look and hastily took a big slurp.

Before long, the entire bowl was licked clean, such good food, how long had it been since he had eaten something so fulfilling?

His eyes widened appropriately, this soup warmed his soul, being down here for as long as he could remember, Jack had forgotten this exquisite taste! chicken soup!

“Does it live up to your standards?” A warm but fragile voice spoke out, Jack who had completely forgotten about this short gray-haired old woman who looked like your average librarian. Just who was she? It was clear that Elsie hadn’t completely made this food herself, and to get the taste as perfect to home as this… Jack came to a sudden reasoning… Was this old woman a human as well?

While pondering these things, he had forgotten that she had asked him a question and quickly respond. “Ah, yes, this soup, it reminds me of home, it’s very nostalgic, did you make it Miss?” to Elsie’s surprise, Jack was being extremely nice to this old woman, and she got beet with anger after remembering her first encounter with him. She had almost lost her life!

“Call me Granny.” The old woman smiled. Call her granny? How generic was this old woman? Did she secretly have a cookie jar here as well?

“And yes, I did make this soup, however this little miss over there helped me a lot.” Nodding over to Elsie, causing her to become a little embarrassed, the old woman walked a little and then sat down in a highly refined rocking chair.

“Now, I’m guessing you have a few questions, little miss sit down and ill begin to explain the reason I helped you and your friend.” After prompting Elsie to a spare chair, which was matching James’s, the old woman began talking.

“Your first question would be, why I helped you two and treated your wounds? Wouldn’t it?” the old woman faced jack, this was something that was on his mind, just why had she saved him? Especially more, down in the underworld, they don’t share the same food as the overworld…

The old woman’s frail voice spoke out once more. “Well, isn’t it natural to help out someone in need?” the old woman just smiled, what kind of answer was that? Jack was stunned, from the information he had gathered, although they were not barbaric, the beings of the underworld weren’t the nicest of folks. This led jack to become even more certain of his theory.

“Wha-“ Jack was about to speak out, however, the old woman put her hand out to stop him. “And the both of you.” She also looked at Claire. “The both of you must be curious about this soup, well...” She looked back to jack and smiled. “It looks like this little lad has an idea about where it’s from.

Jack was startled, had the woman just confirmed his suspicions? Was this soup recipe truly from the overworld?

Just as Jack was in a daze, Claire spoke out. “Granny, what do you mean, are you trying to say that this soup is from the place Jack came from?” Elsie wasn’t stupid, although she put on a playful and coy expression most of the time, she truly had the intellect to match that of a highborn princess, one who stood at the top of academics.

The old Granny did not say anything, however, she silently nodded. This caused Elsie to gasp, and finally gave Jack enough confidence to confirm his suspicions. Did this also mean that this old woman was from the overworld? Just like jack?

However before Jack could ask, Elsie beat him to the punch.

“Granny does that also mean you come from.” She pointed to the sky. “Up there!?!?!” Elsie was practically screaming with joy, although she had met Jack, she hadn’t asked much about “up there” to her, he didn’t seem like the type of person to want to talk about it, however this old woman, it seemed like she had some exciting stories to tell. This intrigued Elsie.

Just what was her dream? To see the sun! her mother had talked so much about it, the brightness, the warmth… She wanted to know, no, she yearned to know every detail about the overworld, and even her father could not stop her!

Seeing the glistening light in her eyes, the old woman couldn’t help but smile, how long had it been since she saw someone so young, so curious about her stories? This little miss was truly a strange girl, however, the old woman didn’t mind it, when she decided to help the boy, the first reason was seeing the little girl punch that hog-like creature, the second was her concern about the boy, the old lady could see she was extremely worried about him. It had been a while since she saw such pure intent, as such, she decided to help them.

While listening to their conversations, Jack was carefully listening to any hints, although he had come down to this world, he had no clue to get back, if this old woman had any clues….

One thing was for certain, this woman had no ill intentions, if she had, both he and Elsie would already have been killed, or worse, caught by Elsie’s father.

As such, he continued to silently listen to Elsie’s and the Old Granny’s conversation.
