Dorothy glumly looks at the written contract in front of her. It already has her signature on it, and the effects of the contract were already and rigidly determined in a cold-cut manner.

“Why do I feel like I was ripped off?”

That aside, Dorothy has no time to agonize over her misfortune. She has a very important mission to accomplish, and that is to collect more information.

Mereoleona didn’t tell her what exactly her goal is, but Dorothy can tell. Whatever it is, it will place Mereoleona’s party in opposition to the Witch Queen. That’s all Dorothy needs to know if she should put her trust in Mereoleona.

What needs to be done now is that Dorothy finds an escape route. This is something Dorothy volunteers to do. For a good reason too.

It has been some time since Dorothy was charting the possible escape routes in this forest. If she already has an escape route in mind, why doesn’t she just bolt her way out and go on her merry way?

The answer is simple, she lacks the power to do so. The ‘possible’ escape routes she has in mind are impossible to overcome for her current self. Dorothy’s initial plan was to build strength, and in time, she’ll find a way for her to escape.

Now, an opportunity presents itself to her. With the assistance of Mereoleona and her comrades, Dorothy’s chances of escaping this place are rising to more than 60%.

After getting tired of staring at the abominable contract in her hand, Dorothy folds the entire thing and pockets it in her robe. Mereoleona is making her own move, so Dorothy can leave that redhead to her own.

Strolling by the fountain, Dorothy joins the conversations of her witch sisters whom she doesn’t exactly know their names.

“Hey, did you know?”
“What is it? Oh, I know, right?”
“Yes, Diamond Mages are seen around the forest.”
“Will there be an invasion? I am scared…”
“Nah, that’s impossible. We have the Witch Queen.”
“Yeah, they’d be dead, before that happens.”
“But the Diamond Kingdom now has a champion, right?”
“Oh, the Giant, wasn’t it?”

Rather than joining the conversation, Dorothy is more likely to eavesdrop. Gossips weren’t really a reliable source of information, but if such gossip is coming from the mouth of witches tasked with outside activities, that changes things.

The witches’ hierarchy is platonic. There is the queen, and then the witches… That’s it. If there is a unique way to put the ‘relationships’ of witches, then it would be according to their circles of friends, or simply the group of people sharing the same roles.

The witches that Dorothy was eavesdropping, these witches are tasked with bringing and delivering witch ‘products’ from and to the outside world.

Dorothy has always been jealous of this group of witches. “Hmmm, if a war really comes knocking at our doorsteps, then that would be a good opportunity for us.”

After a week or so of passive information gathering, a war did really come.

~~~
This is fucking crazy, Jack thought.
Jack never imagined being apprehended like this. “Hey, bastard, where the hell did you lot come from kekekeke~ I don’t recognize the insignia in your robes.”
Inside a barrier of translucent white, Jack observes the people in black milling around. There were not many of them, about twelve… But each of them exudes the aura of a captain-class Magic Knight,
For Jack, this is too baffling. “Kekeke~! This is too elite of a force for a small organization. Not even the Royal Knights of the Clover Kingdom can compare to this.”
The bastards ignored Jack’s muttering. For them, Jack is not even worth their extra caution. They are that strong.
After some time, the tents were finally set up in order. Night came, and all eleven slept in their tents except one to serve as a night watch.
The night watch was a young man with hair as white as snow. Jack reckon that the young man was about his age. “Hey, you! Let’s talk, come on, and don’t be so boring… Kekeke~”
Jack won’t forget about this white-haired bastard so easily. This is the same bastard responsible for his predicament after all. “Hey you, white hair bastard! How dare you sneak attack me? I was sleeping peacefully, but suddenly I am here!? That’s unfair!”
“Shut up,” The white-haired bastard haughtily said. “My name is Cain, you barbarian. The captain will talk to you tomorrow. I and my comrades are too exhausted to entertain your babbling. We just came from the other continent, so spare us some rest, will you?”
Another continent? This is big news. Jack knowingly nods at Cain’s answer. “Hmmm… So, is this an invasion then? Considering that we are near the Witches’ Forest… Is the Witch Queen your target?”
“…”
Cain’s silence might as well be a yes for Jack.
Aware of his blunder, Cain cusses at Jack. “Holy shit, the captain will be mad at me. I just had to say those things… Tsk… You fucker!” Cain summons his grimoire, and with a snap of his finger, activates his magic.
Jack can feel the barrier trapping him getting stronger. All sounds were cut off in an instant. The feat itself was amazing, but that’s not where Jack’s attention lies— but at the grimoire of Cain instead.
The grimoire is as white as ivory, and its center is an insignia of a weird cross. The black robes of the twelve bastards also have a cross. The only difference is that the cross in the robes looks normal.
The cross however in Cain’s grimoire looks weird… It looks like a four-pointed star, but on a closer look, it looks like four daggers joined together to make a cross.
Jack can only think of one place. If it is about crosses— then it can only be the church.
Not much is known about the church. What Jack knows is that the church known in the Clover Kingdom is a result of a foreign influence. As to how foreign it is, Jack doesn’t know.
Jack’s mind goes into a flurry. ‘Hmmm… Aaron has to learn of this.’
Though Jack is somewhat of a thug, he is a true Magic Knight. It is painfully obvious to him how vital this information is for them.
“Kekekeke~” With a creepy laugh, he directs his malice at Cain. “I’d love to mince you to ribbons, but you can wait for another time.”
DEATH SCYTHE: LUNATIC SLASH!
Jack unleashes a flurry of flying blades within seconds causing the barrier to fall to pieces.
REINFORCEMENT MAGIC: LEG STRENGTH BOOST!
Jack concentrates magic on his legs, as a result, increasing his leg strength, boosting his running speed, and enhancing jumping distance.
Just like that, Jack scurried.
“What the fu— ” Cain wasn’t able to react in time, as Jack rushes to escape.
