Normally, Jonathan would formally address his own mother from earth. But if he were to do that, his charade as acting like a five-year old would cause doubt. Shinobi weren't stupid. And Nonō Yakushi was far from being foolish. Her kindness, however, would inevitably be one the reasons to her downfall. If Jonathan can take advantage of that kindness, he could thrive here in the orphanage without needing to return to the village for some time.
"I—I'm sorry. When I saw you, you looked like my mom," Jonathan claimed innocently.
Just like Jonathan expected, Nonō didn't blush nor did she feel surprised. She gave a heartwarming smile and calmly rubbed Jonathan's head.
"It's okay. Tell us what happened," Nonō said.
This was typical of Nonō Yakushi. To others her smile might have seemed full of nurture, but Nonō was once a part of a Root, a sinister organization. While she was there, her nickname was the Wandering Miko (a shrine maiden in Japan). She wasn't just examining Jonathan's appearance, she also reading his every actions. As well as his responses.
"I don't remember," Jonathan answered whilst looking down.
"What about your parents? Do they know where you are?" Nonō asked.
Jonathan had already gotten used to this question. He lowered his whole upper body and remained silent. The room came into a frenzy. It didn't take long for Nonō Yakushi to calm everyone down.
"It's okay. Everything will be alright." Nonō gently embraced Jonathan and held him close to her bosom. Most men would enjoy being hugged tightly by a beautiful woman. But Jonathan's hatred bloomed. Being hugged by this stranger was like trying to replace his own mother's warming embrace. If Jonathan could, he'd slay Nonō Yakushi for touching him in such a manner. And he'd do it without much hesitation either. As long as Jonathan bears this humility for now, he'll succeed.
Nonō let go of Jonathan after feeling his sense of loneliness. "The shinobi world can be so cruel to children like this," Nonō thought to herself. Jonathan could hear one of the children's conversations.
"Hey, Kabuto. You can't remember where you're from either, right?" an orphan boy asked.
The fact that Jonathan was being compared to Kabuto Yakushi didn't irritate him. Kabuto would eventually become powerful enough to help orchestrate an entire war. What did annoy him was who Kabuto Yakushi was. He had no past and was manipulated by many people before changing his personality twice. Jonathan was nothing like Kabuto. Jonathan had a life elsewhere, he had memories of his friends and family.
Unlike Kabuto, Jonathan had a purpose in life.
