For the next week, Jonathan had fully integrated into the orphanage. Because he isolated himself from others and spoke very little, the other children gave him ridiculous nicknames like Musei and Mugon. Both words meaning voiceless or dumb. And apart of Jonathan had truly felt dumb. With each passing day, he had to do chores around the orphanage like help cook and clean. When it came time to play, he segregated himself from the group in order to follow Nonō Yakushi.
Kabuto would be around Nonō as well due the bond they shared. It wasn't long that Jonathan discovered that Kabuto had arrived to the orphanage only a few months after him. From what he understood, Kabuto would spend three more years here before sacrificing himself to joining Root. It was his selfless act to try and save the orphanage. With all the knowledge he's learned over the years from watching a series he hated, it'd finally start bearing its fruit.
He was now in a strange world where he had to survive with nothing.
The reason Jonathan sought to learn medical ninjutsu was not because of how easy it was. It was because of how underutilized it was. Jonathan knew his control over chakra would have to be at an expert's level to truly perfect healing techniques, but that was something he was prepared to learn. It took some of the more useless characters years to practice it, and that's what Jonathan had: years to practice. He had at the most three years to truly take advantage of something most of the ninjas were lacking in.
Jonathan already learned biology, anatomy and physiology while he was in college back on earth. While something like poison or medicine in this world were slightly different than the one's on earth, he had more than enough time to study them. He had already understood how to correctly employ techniques as well as how to operate jutsus on levels that beginners could not. He just needed to make use of chakra and chakra control. No technique or skills, aside from raw fist fighting, could be used without chakra. And Jonathan knew something like martial arts, also known as taijutsu, would take too long to perfect.
"Mom," Jonathan said behind Nonō's office door.
"Come in."
From the physical examination they performed on Jonathan, they found he was exactly four foot in height and weighed at around fifty-two pounds. Walking in, Nonō couldn't help but be happy at Jonathan's presence.
"Musei," she said peaceably. "How're you doing this evening?"
All the children were preparing for bed, so Jonathan used this moment to speak to Nonō since she tends to be quite busy during the day.
"I'm good," Jonathan replied. Since he came to this world, he had long since accepted the fact he needed to act like a child as not to arouse suspicions. When Nonō asked Jonathan what he needed, he gave one simple answer:
"I'd like to become a nurse like you, mom." Jonathan was crafty with his words. He didn't say things like "ninja" or "shinobi". He didn't even use the word "medical". He said what any child with a pure ambition would. Nonō couldn't help but feel moved at Jonathan's statement. Had Jonathan brought this to her during the couple of days he came here, it would lead to a lot of questions. Instead, Jonathan bided his time. For a whole week he waited for this opportunity.
"You know, you remind me a lot of Kabuto," Nonō said closing her eyes with a smile. She hadn't expected Jonathan to know what she meant nor did she wait for a reply because of how unspoken Jonathan was. She opened her eyes and continued, "Tomorrow, I'll give you something special." Jonathan gave a look of excitement before bowing his head to show his gratitude.
After Jonathan left Nonō's office, he showed no emotions. He had already known what Nonō was going to give him. All medical students back on earth weren't just thrown into the field on their first day. They all had to study and take various tests to prove their aptitude. It was no different than learning to be a medical student on earth.
When the morrow came, Jonathan arranged his bed like all the other orphans. Because he had isolated himself from the group, the other children never bothered to greet him. They eventually stopped teasing him when he didn't reciprocate either. Even if they felt like bullying him for his indifferent attitude, they could not. The staff would punish them. Instead, they let Jonathan be an outcast. The only person who felt a sort of kinship with Jonathan was Kabuto. But even he was treated with coldness by Jonathan.
Jonathan knew how powerful Kabuto would become. But that revelation wouldn't unfold for more than twenty years from now. And even if Kabuto became familiar with Jonathan, he would be doing so in vain. Jonathan would spare no one in this world.
