Chapter 93: Chapter 93: The First Stage

When Jonathan went to visit the area where the first part of the exams were, he was high in the air from the Forest of Death.

Each exam year was divided by four stages. However, the preliminary matches were not being held this year.  From what Jonathan understood, Chūnin exams were also held by different villages. This year's was the Leaf Village's. About eleven years from now, the Sand Village would host it. Their first stage of the exams involved running a long distance.

What Jonathan was interested in now was, what the first stage was to this exam. The proctors were not the same. Whilst in his smoked form, he watched from a safe enough distance as not to be remotely detected.

"Listen up," a proctor stated. "I'm glad we have some new faces this year. That just makes things a lot harder on you." Jonathan scanned the area and found Izumi with her team. Not a single person taking this exam looked familiar. Save Iruka Umino.

"For the first stage of the exam, your team will have to get by to this forest. If you fail to get into the forest after an hour of trying, you fail the Chūnin exams." A lot of people looked at each other in concern. Jonathan noticed Izumi, however, had a straight face. Her teammates seemed equally calm.

The forty-fourth training ground was a very huge area, but Jonathan understood the rules of this first stage. There were about five Chūnin standing several yards apart at the front of gates. And there was roughly thirty teams in total. That meant approximately ninety genin had to enter into the Forest of Death, where the second stage would begin. But to do that, they first had to get by the Chūnin guarding the entrance.

The issue was, the proctor didn't say how they could do that. He only hinted the second stage was within the forest…

The instant the proctor said "begin", several teams ignorantly tried jumping over the proctors. All of them were repelled back several meters away. Jonathan activated his sharingan and saw that there was a large, hidden barrier. The tags were carefully placed underground that no one could detect them. At least without something specially equipped.

When Jonathan looked at Izumi's group, they were no longer there.

'That's strange. I should have kept my eyes on them rather than the exam,' Jonathan thought. He immediately ventured into the Forest of Death by flying high above. The barrier hadn't covered the whole forest. Only a large portion of the front was being blocked. By the time Jonathan made it inside, he slowly descended and reverted to his physical form. Opening his eyes, Jonathan quickly found a spot to dwell for safety.

From what Jonathan understood, it's that neither the proctors nor the Hokage would be monitoring the second portion of the exams from the inside. At least not this early.

Jonathan was safe for now. And he already had an idea what the second portion consisted of. Unlike seven years from now, this part consisted of team battles. All the participants had to do was reach the center in a certain amount of time. There were no scrolls they had to attain, nor was there any need to fight. However, if another team attacked and you lose your battle, you'll be knocked out of the exams. The good part is, just because your team is defeated doesn't mean you can't advance.

The timing for the second portion was twelve hours. Jonathan knew all this information because there was a sign nearby for those who passed the first stage.

Jonathan sat back on a tree and began restoring his chakra reserve secretly. With his eyes closed, he waited. The area he was in was quite close to the center. No matter which team it was, they all had one destination.

A whole hour had passed. Not a single team came towards Jonathan's area. Every twenty minutes, Jonathan would use a little of his sensing technique to scout around. If the participants were traveling on foot from the entrance, it would take them several hours to reach near the center. Jonathan managed to make it in less than that time due to being not only familiar with the area, but also conveniently traveling by air.

When Jonathan felt his charka levels high enough for what he was planning, he arose from the branch and opened his eyes. He then hopped forward, dropping straight to the ground. The instant he landed, he used the hi-speed movement technique and dashed from the area, sharingan already active.

"Geeze, Izumi. Tee-he. You didn't tell us how you knew about the barrier," a kunochi said. "You saw the tags with your sharingan, huh? Tee-he."

Izumi hadn't answered.

"Leave her alone," a shinobi said. "If it wasn't for Izumi, we would have been stuck back there like the others."

Just like one would expect from a closed off person, Izumi Uchiha hardly spoke and wasn't one to be considered a team member. The two with her were her genin partners, both of whom were older than her by at least five to seven years. Because of their maturity, they didn't let Izumi's coldness get to them. Rather, they valued her skills as a respectable fighter.

"It'll be some time until we reach the center," Izumi addressed the group. "Since we're the first one's to come, it's best we keep pushing forward immediately."

"Right!" Izumi's teammates agreed. The group wasted no time in departing.

After an hour in their traveling, Izumi spotted something. She clicked her tongue and immediately separated from the group.

"Izumi! Where are you going?!" the kunochi yelled out.

"I thought I saw something." Izumi said. "You two keep going. I'll catch up soon enough!"

Several meters away and Izumi landed on the ground. "I know you're here," she said while looking around. When she didn't see anyone, she activated her sharingan. The instant she looked up, Jonathan was hanging upside down already in his transformation form as Asura Ōtsutsuki.
