Chapter 18: Chapter 18 – Discoveries and Preperations

Terra headed straight home from the Society of Realms building. A burning desire for dinosaurs filled her heart. Once she returned to her small apartment, she threw herself onto her messy bed and put her focus into her realm space.

She found Kai and informed him of the future events for Gaia, “In the future, the channel will be opened on the first day of each month. Be ready and prepared.”

“The Great Discovery Army will be ready.” Kai claimed.

Full of fighting spirit he continued, “The Extraordinary Research Lab has fully formed. It has also produced some results recently.”

The Extraordinary Research Lab was something Kai started after having so many concurrent high priority subjects. Its main purpose was to research super-humans and objects like them, thus the term extraordinary being used instead. This was a mark in the people of Gaia have progressed its knowledge towards the knowledge of realms in the real world.

From the martial arts realm, the corpses of the martial artists were brought back along with all the other loot. They were frozen in ice to use for research. No results were made in studying the bodies until recently.

The continual development of the Discovery Academy and Research Academy slowly made progress, the microscope playing a vital role. With Babylon’s medical boom led by Charles Babylon, they developed enough of an understanding of creatures. Finally, after all these years, some discoveries in the frosty bodies were made.

“Teacher, please follow me.” Kai headed into the secretive laboratory that was the extraordinary research lab.

At the deepest room, a crude compared to modern Earth lab was set up. On the table in the center of the room, there was a tall martial artist corpse laid there. Terra Stars looked over the room and saw the corpse. She recognized it as the scarred man even after all the research over time and damage from combat back then.

Kai begun his explanation, “We found that these martial artists bodies are not much different from us… or they could really just be ordinary people, but there is a mysterious energy in them.”

“Under the action of this energy their body becomes so strong. We call their energy Martial Qi, and it is a kind of extraordinary energy.” He continued.

Terra Stars knew it was called True Qi at the Society of Realms. It was similar to certain kinds of cultivation methods from Earth history and fiction.

Kai abruptly said, “We also found out this kind of extraordinary energy is quite complicated and not pure. So, these martial artists accumulate the impurities and develop hidden dangers in their bodies when they cultivate with Martial Qi.”

Kai and the scholars with the beginnings of precise laboratory equipment. Found the important details to extraordinary species. Although they could not advance their equipment, with guesswork and tireless hard work, led them until they reached the essence of it.

“Discovering the energy in their bodies was inspirational, but the most important thing this research has shown us is, even super-humans are just a type of creature.”

“They have downsides too.”

“They are not super-humans, just extraordinary people!”

“As long as the essential laws are researched, extraordinary people are not so far away from us!” Kai continued each sentence with only a brief pause before he continued with growing enthusiasm and confidence.

“You finally understand. Now you have started the path of understanding the world.” Terra Stars congratulated him.

Kai had finally understood, all things could be understood, extraordinary was not excluded. His horizons rapidly widened, inspiration constantly sparked in his mind as the whole world felt like a big research task.

He was ecstatic in his heart, struggling to hold it back by pretending to be calm. Of the questions asked by Terra Stars all those years ago, he firmly remembered the final one. Having found out why as the same kind of people, were super humans stronger than ordinary people. He heaved a sigh of relief having answered that question, Kai felt a sense of great accomplishment.

“This alien expedition, I request to lead the team in person!” Kai strongly requested.

The last time the realm passage was opened, Kai was still young. Now he was over forty years old and visibly aged.

“No.” Terra refused.

Before Kai could reply, she continued, “I have an important task for you to do.”

Kai showed some doubt.

“I told you before about weapons that can go beyond the speed of sound… The task is related to that.” Terra explained, it was time to hint and imply the power of combustion.

“Teacher! You mean… Supersonic weapons can really be made now?” Kai was shocked and asked in anticipation.

“Why do you think it is impossible?” Terra proposed.

Kai begun thinking, growing silent for a while as he formulates his answer. Even though his breath of thoughts and knowledge has greatly increased, he still had not sat on such thoughts for long enough.

 His answer begun, “Supersonic weapons will definitely be born in the future… But with the current technology and craftsmanship of the Babylon Kingdom, it will be difficult to realize.”

“Even if it is a bow and arrow made using vibranium alloy, used by the strongest soldier. The fastest speed is only just over 200 metres per second.” Kai said his thoughts aloud.

After a brief pause to look at where Terra Stars’ messages were and realized. Even if he felt the world opened up to him, perhaps there was a peak he did not see. He continued with a hint of anticipation, “Since Teacher mentions it, then there must be an option I haven’t touched.”

“After all, of the six questions you asked. So far, only two of them have been answered.”

Kai looks on with anticipation for his teacher’s reply.

“You are right. The field involved in the supersonic weapon is something you are relatively unfamiliar with.” Terra’s answer was affirming his guesses.

She asked, “Do you know what the speed of sound is?”

“It’s about 340 metres per second.” Kai answered immediately.

At the time Terra Stars first mentioned the concept of supersonic weapons, Kai had been very concerned about it. With the growth of Discovery and Research academies, there have been many inventions and ideas created. Methods of testing the speed of sound was some of them. After many tests they found the speed of sound along with several other details.

“That’s the speed in air, it is faster in water.” He added after a pause.

“Right, today I will not tell you exactly about supersonic weapons. Instead, it will be the foundation of them and weapons of more power than them.” Terra said. Explosion was an art, learning it would be the job of the residents of her realm.

“More powerful than supersonic?!” Kai was shocked.

Before he could say anything else, Terra answered, “The name of this foundation is called black powder.”

“Black powder?” Kai repeated the new term to add it to his lexicon.

Black powder, the epoch-making invention of Earth. Single handily ending the era of cold weapons. On Earth the cold weapon era continued for a long time, here Terra would push its development forwards.

In a united world like Gaia. With only a single nation with the drive for development, the discovery of black powder would not be a powder keg trail to the atrocities of wars. Both the analysis system and Terra Stars thought now was an opportune time to introduce the concept of weaponized explosives.

Back on Earth, Terra Stars was not related to the production and sciences of explosives. All her knowledge stemmed from mandatory science classes and stuff she saw on television. She understood the fuel, oxidizer, and stabilizer science behind it well enough to tell others.

The analysis system was able to tell her about the optimal ratios for the biggest bang using the materials of Gaia. It wasn’t able to tell her the optimal ratio used on Earth. Having bounced multiple questions about black powder at the system, Terra Stars felt she better understood how to use the system. Its limits were not comprehensible to the lazy Realm Ruler.

With the base of black powder and hint of speed, Terra Stars intended to let the people of her realm come up with the concept of guns and bombs directly. With the people with power of the only nation in a constant weapon development craze, they would think of weapons after the introduction. She told the selected information to Kai, being vague she told the closest components in Babylon.

“Saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur?” Upon hearing Terra’s words, Kai realizes he knows these three materials.

He was familiar with them, even someone in Babylon was already using it. The residents of the realm had fireworks already. Kai never expected them to be the way to go for supersonic weapons.

“Fireworks are not enough… if it is not the raw materials used for them…” Kai muttered

“Then it should be about the amount of each material.” He said.

Kai recalled the vibranium he had been working with a lot recently. Vibranium and alloying with various metals made a different result. Kai was very clear on the ratio of each metal used was important fact, even a slight difference could have a huge effect in the characteristics.

“Teacher, I have an idea in heart.” Kai said with eager.

“Then go.” Terra Stars encouraged, she smiled to herself. The fuse cord had been lit, the boom of explosive development and the development of explosives approached.

With Kai headed the research into black powder, the leader of the expedition had to be selected from someone else. As Terra’s latest student and Kai’s successor, Charles was selected.

For the expedition to an alien planet, he prepared greatly. Not just the Great Discovery Army would be going. A team from the extraordinary research lab would go too. They planned to study the extraordinary creatures of each realm within their home world.

Of the men and woman of the research team, they were all the best of the best. Many had won the highest honor of the Babylon Kingdom, the Great Discovery Award. With them, they had piles of various instruments that’s purpose ranged from microscopes to telescopes. Everything brought was the most advanced of the world.

Since the last expedition, many years had passed. Many of the original soldiers of the Great Discovery Army retired or had been transferred to less intense posts. Majority of the army consisted of new soldiers. An atmosphere of nervousness and anticipation spread from the inexperienced elites of Babylon.

The soldiers had undergone extensive simulation training along with critical ideological education and intense education. They were well prepared for a range of situations and environments, and their mental fortitude and resilience was far firmer than the first batch of soldiers. When they face martial artists now, less soldiers would be intimidated.
