A small camp with over a hundred both small and large tents was created in the forests to the north of the City of Ashes after the dragon’s descent three years ago.
Dragons in humanoid form could be seen patrolling the surrounding forests every single night, not a single beast or animal escaping their vigilant eyes.
On this hungry night, there was something else roaming the forest of the north besides those guards.
A lone wolf was slowly moving while keeping its body low to the ground. The sound of the wind blowing, the dragons’ breathing, and even their footsteps. Nothing escaped its senses as it avoided everything while heading for the camp in the center.
Once the tents at the base of the mountain appeared in his sight, Edward closed his eyes to listen to the surrounding sounds. After carefully sensing all the sentries around, he walked to the closest tent at the edge and listened to see if the dragons were indeed asleep. After confirming it, he dragged the carpet covering the entrance to the side without making any noise.
Three dragons were sleeping inside, completely unaware there was an intruder in their tent. Edward knew the dragons’ scales were hard to pierce, but in their humanoid form, they were just as fragile as a normal human.
Without a trace of hesitation, he moved swiftly and clawed all their three heads off in an instant. He didn’t want to use magic, afraid they might react to the mana movement.
He went out and started walking from tent to tent, repeating the same process. If he felt anything wrong, like the dragons appeared to be awake or the tent had too many dragons inside, he simply left and went to the next one.
In this manner, Edward killed over 200 dragons until his stamina fell to about 1000 before retreating out of their camp. He used his status tablet on every dragon he killed, and was overjoyed to notice that he could indeed absorb the life force inside of their bodies.
As he was walking back to the place he left Kali, he returned to his human form and took a deep breath, Eddena’s words resounding in his ear.
‘Each class has its own advantages and disadvantages… I could probably assassinate her if she wasn’t expecting it…’
“You were right. I hope you’re doing well wherever you are…” muttered Edward before knocking on Kali’s scales.
“Wake up, sleepyhead. It’s time for us to leave this place.”
Kali unfolded his wings and brought his head up before staring at Edward. Patting his head gently, Edward jumped on his back and said: “Head east and fly low. Same as we did when coming here.”
As Edward resumed his surveillance and traveled east under the cover of the night atop Kali, a roar entered his ears from the direction of the city, but he didn’t stop Kali at all.
‘It looks like the general finally noticed. Too late, I’m afraid.’
Edward and Kali hid in a cave at the bottom of a cliff in the far east of the continent and waited there for three days. During this time, he had a hard time even hunting because of the constant dragons flying over the land.
On the third day in the evening, Edward noticed that the dragon patrols have thinned out, and he said to Kali: “I’m going to the city on my own. You wait here for me. I should be back in a week or so. If you get hungry, hunt at night and be careful not to get spotted by any dragons.”
The dragon was as intelligent as a normal human, just that it couldn’t speak. However, it easily understood Edward’s commands and nodded.
Turning into his wolf form, Edward rushed towards the city once more under the cover of the night. It took an entire night of running until he returned to the city since he was extra careful about not getting spotted.
“It appears they have asked for reinforcements from their kingdom.” Muttered Edward as he was observing the number of dragon patrols from atop a tall tree.
[Or they have called back the ones spread across the continent. Either way, there are some that you might not be able to deal with, even in your wolf form. Furthermore, I have a bad feeling about their camp.]
Edward frowned, not dismissing Fenrir’s instincts so easily. Looking at their camp, he couldn’t see anything different from the last time besides the increased number of dragons flying above. “Can you figure out what’s wrong?”
[Not from so far away. You’ll need to head closer.]
Edward nodded and jumped down before resting at the base of the tree with his eyes closed. Once night came again, he opened his eyes and said: “I’m going. Let me know when you can feel anything out of order.”
Turning into his wolf again, he slowly made his way toward the dragon camp. As he was about 8 or 900 feet away, the mark on his arm started burning, making Edward stop his advances.
Backing out of the dragon patrols’ range, Fenrir spoke to him again: [There appears to be a field of an unknown energy field covering the entire camp.]
Turning into a human and hiding under a tree, Edward asked: “Can you guess what it is?”
[It feels familiar with the portal that girl made, so maybe space? I also remember that elf mentioning something about the dragons locking space all over the north.]
“Space… I can’t risk rushing in when I don’t understand how space works. It seems the same trick won’t work twice…” Edward chuckled to himself and changed his direction towards the city. He knew for sure there were a lot of dragon patrols in human form throughout the city.
He passed by the gate with ease and didn’t even have to wait long until he spotted his first target. Two dragon guards were walking randomly through the streets, keeping an eye out for something, most likely him.
Using the rooftops, Edward sneaked behind them and killed them both in one swift move before using the tablet to steal their life force away. He roamed almost the entire city, even the pleasure district, killing every dragon he could find and using the tablet to remove the evidence right after. They were easy to spot because of the noise the scales on their wings did as they moved.
He only avoided places with witnesses or other places that were too dangerous for him to walk into, like the church, the magician guild, the assassin guild, the adventurer guild, and so on.
He killed 312 dragons that night before his stamina ran low, and he rushed out of the city. He could have killed more, but he wanted to make sure he didn’t make a single mistake, since once the dragons spotted him, it was game over.
Once his stamina run out as he was heading east and he was pulled out of his wolf form, Edward rolled a couple of times on the ground from the high speed he was running with, before stopping and panting with a smile on his lips.
[I think that’s about enough. You gained two levels and pissed them off enough. They will probably pay even more attention now and would be ready for an assassin.]
“Hehe, I did even more than that.” Replied Edward with a smile.
[What do you mean?]
“How do you think the dragons would react once their city patrols don’t report in the morning?”
[They will… oh.]

“Exactly, they will turn the city upside down looking for me. I doubt the city lord would take that lying down. Since the city also has an assassin guild, the fact that their members were assassinated inside the city will bring suspicion on the city helping me, which will only cause things to get more heated between the two races.”
Fenrir fell silent, and Edward waited under the cover of a lone tree for his stamina to recover. Not long after dawn, he spotted tens of dragons rushing toward the city.
“I wonder how they communicate…” muttered Edward as he watched the mighty display with a sharp look in his eyes.
[Soul fluctuations. They use their souls to project their thoughts over long distances through a link between their souls.]
“Hmm. Any way we can mess with that?”
[I or the wolf can. We can consume the soul link between them.]
“Really? What are the odds the wolf would target a soul link?”
[Pretty high if it’s nearby. However, it won’t go out of its way to do it.]
“That’s good enough.” Said Edward with a smile before closing his eyes again to recover. Once night returned to the land and his stamina recovered, Edward turned again and made his way towards Fallwrath mountains up north. He also told Fenrir to let him know if she feels any soul links nearby.
He kept climbing the mountain while heading northwest. Suddenly, as he was getting close to the Fallwrath volcano, the mark on his hand heated up and he turned back into a human.
[There’s a strong soul link right where you are. If I had to guess, it’s between the dragon kingdom and the general or someone else in the army.]
“Exactly what I was looking for.” Replied Edward before laying down and closing his eyes to sleep. He hasn’t slept for at least an entire month, so he was quite tired, not to mention his wasted stamina.
“How is it?” asked Edward when he appeared in his soul space.
“He broke the link immediately and is now hunting for prey in the mountains.”
“Tell me everything he does. I don’t want to miss a thing.”
Edward sat down with his eyes closed and listened to Fenrir describe the wolf’s activities the entire night. The wolf ran even further north while killing everything it had laid its eyes upon. It encountered a few dragon patrols, but because they were flying, the wolf just avoided them.
When Edward got control again, he was on the northernmost beach of the continent with half a turtle carcass laying next to him.
Looking at the ocean ahead of him, he sighed and muttered: “This wolf won’t even spare fucking turtles…”
Since he was in the north anyway, he decided to pass by the Viera village to check on them as well. He was curious if he could find some more dragons to kill there as well, since Flastrdra told him the younglings would come here to have fun.
He spent half of the day running in his wolf form until he reached the Viera village, but when he arrived there, he was stunned to find it completely abandoned.
Turning into his human form, he muttered: “Did the dragons kill them all?”
[Possible, but at least my claw is still here.]
“Let’s check it out.” Said Edward as he stepped forward and walked through the rundown houses of the village.
He didn’t find a single living body until he entered the depths of the cave. There, he found the leader of the viera playing with a few girls, about twenty or so of them, all younger than 20 years old. He also found hundreds of unmarked graves on the way there.
The leader of the viera also heard the footsteps and looked towards the cave entrance, only to fall on her knees right after landing her eyes on Edward.
“Prophet, you have returned.”
Edward ignored her words and looked at the scenery all around before asking: “What happened here? Did the dragons kill all of your people?”
“No, Prophet. I did.”
“You? Why?” asked Edward, bewildered by the situation.
“Because the prophet told us not to mention anything about what happened that day. I know my people won’t be able to abstain from speaking about it, so I killed them all while sparing the children. This also assured us that the rage of the dragons won’t fall on our race.”
Edward understood the situation and heaved a long sigh. As crazy as it sounded, he knew this was the best way of assuring the survival of their race. The fanatical look in her eyes as she stared at him only made Edward feel even worse for the poor viera leader. She did it for her belief in Fenrir, as well as his words.
“Stand up. There’s no need for you to kneel before me. All I ever brought you were troubles.”
The woman couldn’t bear to correct the prophet of her god and stood up as she was told.
“What’s your name? I never got to ask you the last time I was here.”
“Your humble servant has no name. All leaders of the viera are to remain nameless and pure.” Replied the woman with her head bowed.
Edward sighed again and said: “Alright. I’ll make it up to you for everything in the future. For now, avoid going out too often. The dragons might go through some troubles and these forests might not be safe for much longer.”
“As the prophet dictates.”
Edward turned around with another sigh and left the cave. He wanted to have Fenrir devour her claw initially, but changed his mind out of pity. He wanted to make it up for them now, but he had other priorities.
Once outside, he turned again and started climbing the mountain to return to the City of Ashes. He wanted to see if killing their people in the city and cutting the link between their general and the kingdom would create some more openings for him to exploit.
