Chapter 20:

A Kindness

Coughing, I could taste the iron in my mouth. It was difficult trying to sit up. My entire body was sore, but somehow, I was able to prop myself up against a wall. I could feel the warmth of blood trickling down my face as it clung to the sack.

"T-Trouble?" I chuckled through the pain, "I'm not the one you should worry about..."

"...Damn it," She muttered, annoyed, "That bitch hit you hard, huh?"

The sack rustled, peeling from the side of my face before it was completely removed. As my vision adjusted, I came face to face with a rather beautiful, yet stern looking woman. I was surprised to see someone like this among kidnappers, but anything was possible.

Sharp features and light brown skin. Eyes of emerald green and long dark hair tied in a tight ponytail. A turtleneck sweater and jeans, all black. Truly, she looked like something out of the movies. Like some sort of stereotypical "secret agent" type. A professional villain.

Yet, as I watched her silently, there was something in her eyes. The way she handled me when she gripped my chin. It was rough, but careful. Checking my face, she clicked her tongue and pulled out a cloth from a kit she had.

"Hold still," She ordered, wiping the blood from my face that poured from a cut above my left eye.

I watched her cautiously, her face seemingly impassive. I had a certain feeling when it came to some things. Call it empathy or what have you, but I could tell when things were wrong or off. It's how I figured out my exes cheated on me. It helped to tell when people were lying or hiding something.

Of course, it wasn't always perfect. Sometimes it backfired and was only anxiety and overthinking. I came to doubt it more often than not, but it wasn't anything I could just always ignore. There was something about this woman that felt off. Something her impassiveness hid, I was sure of it.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked quietly, "You could just leave me."

"...I'm just doing my job," She replied simply, taking out what I assumed was cleaning alcohol, "This is going to sting."

Sure enough, as the cloth soaked in alcohol hit my wound, the pain stung. She had wiped away the blood first, then applied the cleaning solution. There was no reason to do this.

"Even so..." I said through heavy breaths, "You seem different from the others."

"They're idiots," She answered, then caught herself, "Whatever you're thinking, stop."

"I'm not..." Shaking my head, I sighed, leaning my head back against the wall.

I was in a small room, and unlike I thought, it was dimly lit. Cold and damp, there were no windows on the room.

"I know she won't survive, none of them will, but..." Looking at her, she was pulling bandages out of her kit, "There's no reason she should be helping me. I know what will happen, but perhaps..."

"Do you know...who I am?" I asked, not in a way that was arrogant, but out of curiosity.

From the conversations I heard before, it seemed not everyone knew who I was.

"Is that supposed to scare me?" She scoffed, taking the bandage and preparing it, "That doesn't matter. We were paid to kidnap you, and we'll get money out of your wife in the process."

"...No, you won't," My words seemed to give her pause as I shook my head.

"And why is that? Doesn't she care?" Her words were cold, as if trying to provoke me.

"Ha, oh, she cares," I chuckled softly, my heart warming at the thought, "More than you may think...That's why you won't be getting the money."

She paused once more, her eyes narrowing on me. Tilting her head, she seemed curious.

"Why is that? Isn't she rich?" Her words began to tell me something.

"She has no idea..." It seems that whoever took this job, only a few people among them knew the truth.

"Do you even know...who she is?" I was shocked as she shrugged.

"Just some rich woman," The look on her face told me she believed that, "We don't ask questions. We just do the work."

"Well, that's a mistake," The words were out of my mouth before I could think.

It was a mistake, as it seemed to anger her. Her hand gripped my chin firmly.

"Is that so?" She sneered, smirking as she pulled my head towards her, "Listen, I don't really care. I'm here to get paid, that's it."

"You won't," There was nothing but sympathy on my face.

"Don't look at me like that," She retorted angrily, "I don't need your sympathy."

Turning my head roughly, she placed the bandage over my cut and let go. Slightly pushing me back as I fell against the wall once more. Despite that, it had been gentle. As if she didn't want to hurt me, even in her anger.

"Look, I just..." Looking away from her, I didn't know what else to say, "You helped me when you didn't have to..."

Putting everything away in the kit, the woman stood to walk to the door. Pausing with one hand on the frame.

"You keep saying that," Glancing back at me, I was sure of it then, there was a softness to her eyes, "What does that matter?"

"I don't know...I just have a bleeding heart," I laughed at myself, sighing deeply, "Just...don't be here when she arrives. If there's anyone you care about here, take them and leave."

Her eyes lingered on me a moment, as if she was thinking before she finally responded.

"You won't scare me," Turning to look away from me, "Now...just stay quiet."

The metal door closed, locking as I was left in silence again.

"Two months ago, I'd never be able to speak up like that," I mused, looking up at the dim light hanging on the ceiling, "Hell, just a week ago I'd not be able to. Cecelia has changed me, but more than that...that woman was kind. I hope she takes my advice."

I definitely had a bleeding heart. Even though I was kidnapped, I reached out to this woman. Whether it was the kindness she showed me, or something else I wasn't sure. My wife would come, and people would die, but they didn't all have to.
