Chapter 27:
Small Talk
Julius and Yuriko were visiting. They wanted to meet me, Cecelia's husband and obsession. Julius was indeed the one behind those who kidnapped me. Anise, along with Cecelia's own assumptions, led to his discovery. The clue was in what I had told her.
"They were told not to harm me."
That clue alone was enough to make Cecelia suspect her brother. He was impulsive. Wanting to isolate and question me. Believing that Cecelia would not give him the chance otherwise. So, he set up a plan to kidnap me and make it look like a typical kidnapping. Complete with ransom and everything.
It backfired, with him underestimating her reaction time and just how far her obsession went. Though he felt no remorse for those who died. I, however, felt an immense amount of guilt. None of them needed to die.
"Oh, my love..." Cecelia embraced me, my head to her chest, "Julius, apologize."
"But they were just-" Julius protested, but was silenced by Cecelia with a single look.
"Didn't you kill them though, Celia?" Yuriko's voice was calm as always, playful.
"I..." Cecelia seemed to be unable to refute Yuriko, "...Well, they took him. I couldn't help it. And they hurt him..."
"But, that was just Anise," Yuriko's serene smile seemed to tear down whatever walls Cecelia had around her defense.
We were lounging in one of the many sitting rooms. Yuriko sat on the floor, legs under the coffee table as she half laid upon it. Propping herself up slightly with one arm, while playing with the flowers in the vase upon the table with the other. Her gaze distant, but I understood what Cecelia meant when she said her mind was keen.
"Th-That aside..." Cecelia held me to her on the couch as if showing Yuriko her reasoning, and giving her last line of defense, "Julius was the one who hired them."
"...They were just-" Julius once more attempted to defend himself, sitting in a well-cushioned armchair.
"If you made a mistake," Yuriko smiled as if in a haze, "You should apologize for it, right?"

Both Cecelia and Julius winced at her words. I could only chuckle softly, pushing myself up from Cecelia's embrace.
"Love?" Cecelia questioned as I sat up.
"Sorry, I know I shouldn't laugh over this kind of talk, but..." Looking between them all I couldn't help but feel the bond between them, "How both of you just crumble under Yuriko is...amusing."
Yuriko grinned, giggling. Cecelia smiled softly, embarrassed as she avoided eye contact. Julius blushed, looking away defiantly. Yet, there was a warmth that filled the room.
"These three...really care about each other," Holding Cecelia's hand, I squeezed it reassuringly. Nodding gratefully towards me, she cleared her throat.
"I'm sorry, love..." She apologized, but I simply shook my head.
"I...I am as well," Julius replied stubbornly, "I should think better in the future."
Again, I simply dismissed it. You couldn't change the past. Though my heart was heavy, I understood this. Taking a few breaths to calm myself, Cecelia placed my head in her lap. Stroking my hair gently as she talked to her siblings. I simply laid back, enjoying the company.
Contrary to what I believed, Cecelia did not injure Julius's arm. There were several people harassing others at the college he goes to. Though he is often considered distant and cold, he stepped in to help. He ended up injured, but those he fought ended up in the hospital. So, overall he was much better off.
"Honestly...this family is pretty crazy," I admired them in a strange way. Though they were so different from everyone I knew, they were also just people. Their lives were hard and the way they grew up wasn't exactly easy.
They lived a life of luxury, but one that came through abuse and heavy responsibility. Yuriko was the middle child and Julius was the youngest. Cecelia, of course, was the oldest and the one who looked after them. I was proud of her.
