Chapter 8: Chapter 5: First Signs of Life

I continued walking downstream of the river, finishing off the apple in my hand as I did so.

Tossing the core into the nearby woods I went into my items box again and summoned another apple, and then began eating it. Since I am still hungry.

I finished off my second apple in no time at all, and then I began on a third.

Continuing to walk alongside the river as I did so.

Eventually though the river stopped.

Once it did I found myself in front of medium-sized lake.

Looking at the clear-blue surface of the water I found myself a bit entranced.

But that all came crashing down a moment later when I heard a voice.

Immediately putting my guard up I pulled up the hood of my cloak, and then activated one of my assassin skills.

{Dampen Presence}

It's a nifty little skill that makes me extremely hard to detect. It even erases my scent from the air, so unless a person has a detection magic spell set up or a similar skill I am virtually invisible to people unless I want them to know I'm there.

This is made even truer thanks to my [Cloak of Erebus] I am currently wearing. It gives me a 50% boost in speed, evasion, and applies the same boost to my evasion-type skills.

So again, unless I want a person to know I am near them they won't.

As to why I am doing this,  I would rather be safe than sorry.

No telling who those voices belong too. They could be friendly or they could not. So until I get more information I am airing on the side of caution.

Simple as that.

My skill up and running I started slowly but surely moving in the direction of the voices I heard.

Entering the trees I walked through them for some time until they ended near a cliff.

Getting on my stomach I moved forward and then peeked over the cliff.

When I did so I saw quite the sight.

A young woman covered in cuts and bruises, rips in her clothing and her chest partially exposed.

Breathing heavily she rested the tip of her sword in the ground, a strained expression on her rather cute face.

I'm just being honest, the girl is quite beautiful.

Porcelain white skin, D-cup breasts, curves in all the right places. Along with dark-blue eyes and golden-blonde hair tied in a single braid resting behind her head. Two strands framing her face.

Overall, she's a real looker.

But back to the main point.

Currently this girl is surrounded by monsters.

Skeletons holding swords and shields in their hands, their bodies covered with armor.

They are a monster known as Skeletal Knights.

High-level undead.

But that's not the end of things.

Standing behind the 50 Skeletal Knights I can see is another undead. This one covered head-to-toe in black robes and wielding a magic staff, dark energy emanating from the crystal atop it.

It's a Lich.

An undead monster, and one of the strongest back in Ethereal Ark Online.

Those bastards can summon other undead of lower-levels from their own to fight for them. So unless you clear out their bodyguards defeating them is not easy. Add into that the Lich magic casting as you fight and things get even more complicated.

My friends and I had quite the time defeating Lich back in the game.

It took all of us working together as full party to do so. Yet this girl in front of me is taking on the Lich and all its undead servants alone.

Is she crazy or just super arrogant? I can't decide.

Leaning on her sword for support the young woman in front of me stood to her feet.

As she did so the Lich grinned in her direction.

It then pointed it staff at her and dark energy shot out, striking the woman in her left leg, making her scream in pain.

"Agh!!"

'It's playing with her.' I thought.

This Lich knows it has this girl cornered but it's not finishing her off. It's tormenting her for its own pleasure.

Which I find highly interesting, since monsters back in the game never did things like this.

Then again that was a game and this is real-life so of course things are going to be different. But I never expected something like this.

It's good information to have.

Now then, time to get to work.

Clearing my mind of unnecessary thoughts I prepared to head into the battle to save the girl.

Since leaving her at the mercy of that sadistic Lich and its skeletal lackies doesn't sit right with me. Plus, leaving the only other person I've come across to die like this is just plain stupid. Helping her out will also help me out since she definitely has information on this world.

I can also use this to test myself in a real fight, since that Red Wolf earlier didn't do anything for me.

Basically this situation has too many gains to pass up.

Thus its time for me to enter the fray.

But first things first.

{Appraisal}

I softly spoke.

Back in the game this was the only universal skill amongst all the classes. By using it one can determine specific information about items and monsters like levels. It even worked against other players who sometimes used items or skills to hide their actual level.

Saved me and my friends a bunch when we ended up encountering PKer's.

Also known as Player Killers. Those in the game who went around killing other players for fun and pleasure.

I hated those guys, still do even know.

Moving on.

{Appraisal} worked as intended.

Within a minute of it activating I gained tons of information on my opponents.

All of the Skeletal Knights have the same status, give or take a few downed HP bars here or there.

Definitely thanks to the girl in front of me.

The Lich on the other hand is a different story.

Yep, just like I thought, the bastard is strong. Only a few levels short of my own.

Well no matter, I'll manage somehow.

Taking all the information on the Lich and Skeletal Knights in I also glanced at the status of the girl in font of me.

'So here name is Alicia.' I thought.

Nice.

It's a pretty name for a pretty girl.

But more than that her level isn't bad either, and neither are her two classes.

Holy Knights are the opposite of dark knights. They can wield holy power and specialize in buffing spells. While Clerics are master healers and also utilize a lot of buffing spells as well. Also both classes are strong against the undead.

If this girl was just a few levels higher I think she could've handled the Lich and his minions on her own.

Too bad that's not the case.

Well enough dilly-dallying, time to get this show on the road.

Standing to my feet I summoned Gram from my items box and then jumped down from atop the cliff to join the fray.
