The hail of lead finally let up, twenty, I counted the holes in the floor and the walls, dumping a whole magazine blind into a door. Crazy people.
The floors were clean—no spilling blood or piss. I had expected both. Good to be disappointed, piss would have smelt awful and the blood would have been annoying.
But probably the most surprising was the trembling Dina not vomiting, pissing, or dying despite having practically stood in the middle of the spray. She was curled up against me, practically burning herself in my body, her arms tightly latched to my waist, not letting me move and her legs curled up to her body.
It reminded me of myself and my mother and when I was too terrified to sleep, I remembered what she did to calm me down too.
I started petting the fool in my lap, slowly running my hands from her hair down to her back, "Everything will be fine Dina, I am here," I slowly whispered into her ears as my other hand tightened her to me.
It was only after a few minutes that she stopped trembling and her eyes raised to meet mine, "Thank you," She mouthed before slowly separating herself from me. I nodded before my eyes washed over the faces of the kids, they were all scared, terrified—bad, terrified humans make poor meat shields.
I pulled myself up from the ground grabbing my makeshift baton in the process, seeing me Dina also started to rise.
I needed to take stock of the situation, the children were fine, mostly, checking my phone—the signal was still gone. And from the windows, goons still patrolled the parameter.
We were stuck here, trapped in this room, gunmen on one side and a drop that would most certainly kill us on the other.
Biting my lips, my head went to think what I can do to get out of this cluster-fuck, but nothing came up. Blank. There had to be some way. Boxed in a concrete cell—a silent scream of fury rose from my stomach that I swallowed back down. It wasn't enough. Fuck! Helpless!? Me!? I who made entire companies dance at my fingertips? Me who decided the fates of fools with a finger?
My hand gripped tightly onto the desk leg. I should have gotten away from this shitshow the moment I heard the shot, but no I had to pretend that I cared about these fools? I should have bolted to the attic and hidden there. I would have had options. Not like this.
A faint buzzing rose in the corner of my consciousness. A headache? Great. Trying to find reprieve from the pain, I shut my eyes, only to see the dark light up like a nebula. The buzzing stopped, slowly crystallizing. And I could feel something in me break loose—like a lock being torn off as if a glass wall was cracking.
Started and confused I open my eyes, only to feel the crystals still. They were waiting for something. And almost as if by instinct, I knew what that something was–my will.

And I willed it and as if it were a third arm, it hummed and a green glow started to form in my palm, and slowly crackling and breaking a clump of flesh started to form in my hand—was this magic? My gut said no.
The clump stood still waiting for me to give it shape and I began to lose myself in it, "Mira..." just as the words reminded me of where I was, it all vanished like it wasn't there but my breathing stilled as I turned around to see Dina's eyes gazing at the rest of crowd fragmenting into small groups.
Good, she didn't see.

Batman stood over the bell tower overlooking the Academy, "This is odd."
"What is Bruce?" Oracle chimed over the comms.
"The number of guards is too low, especially for Joker," His cape fluttered against the cold wind of the evening as he stared down at the Academy surrounded by police on every side.
"You are right the GCPD could break the defenses easily if you get the hostages," Oracle agreed.
Taking a second to scan for a landing spot he dived from the room. Breaking through the cold wind he let his cape loose as it caught the wind, turning the dive into a glide, his form scattered the light of the dying sun away, casting a shadow on all beneath.
But in the mayhem of architecture that was the city of Gotham even that shadow was lost, as he glided over the roof undetected.
"Bruce, Damian is on the way to Mira, he will be by her class in five minutes," Oracle told him to which he said, "I will get the staff."
Activating the Bat-scanners, the world was covered in a blue lens, the calcium in the skeletons of everybody in the building lit up like Christmas light, he could see a group of men guarding a group of men and women all wound up and roped up different corners of the building.
"Oracle, Harley intends on wasting our time, find out why."
