“We can’t touch it directly. It would be too dangerous.” spoke up Everlong, adding something under his breath “And I don’t want to use that…”

“Then how are we going to take it away?” asked Hiyori, not hearing his last remark.

“I only need its essence anyway!” stood up, aiming his revolver at the piece of scale with a grin.

“Oh! Okay!” nodded Hiyori, standing further back, finding it logical as to her it was just a nice looking trinket. But for Troduc? He was shaking, almost vomiting up his own organs!

His greed overwrote everything he was thinking at that moment. Letting something that valuable to be destroyed? Not on his watch! Jumping forward, with an otherworldly, loin-like roar, he stormed towards Everlong. Every stomp of his legs were like the poundings of a blacksmith’s hammer on an anvil, leaving deep marks behind. He was fast and heavy, heading towards him like a freight train in motion.

“I told you, you are too predictable!” smirked Everlong, dodging sideways and his revolver was already facing Troduc. When the hammer of it landed came the draconic roar again, escaping the silver barrel, lighting up the darkness as a golden shell was heading forward, faster than sound. Troduc had no time to dodge as he was already in a rush. His survival instincts at that moment finally overrode his greed, as he raised the box in its hands before his face, the target of Everlong’s weapon. Both of his hands and the black box were covered with green fire, burning in full force, making Hiyori feel like she was in the belly of a volcano. When Evelrong’s bullet arrived, it resulted in another big explosion, throwing everyone backwards.

“Not again!” grunted Hiyori, rolling through the mud, now without her barrier, feeling it even more as she curled up by reflex from the pain. While her body was kicking up mud and dirt she distinctly heard something cracking, a beast screaming in pain and a human laughing without restrain, all mixing together in a weird cocktail of sound.

When she looked up again, laying on her stomach, she saw Troduc, his hands burnt up to his shoulders, looking just as black as the box itself, that was floating in the air before the two. Thanks to the demon’s powers, it survived the initial impact but it was cracked at multiple places and its lid flipped open. The feather inside of it was thrown into the air, floating gracefully, shining as a little lamp in the darkness of the night. Troduc, ignoring the pain in his claws, grabbed forward, reaching towards the feather, sure that Everlong would do the same, he just had to be faster!

“Put the letter in the box too!” mimicked the detective the demon’s voice while he simply grabbed the black box instead, looking into Troduc’s eyes. His mocking voice and smile quickly vanished as his voice arrived at his ears again “Get the fuck out here, Troduc, before I blast your sorry ass back to hell in pieces!” whispered, free of all mockery at that moment, speaking like a ruler would speak to one of his subjects who was caught stealing from him.

His blue eyes penetrated deep into the demon’s and Troduc saw cold, merciless flames dancing in them in the color of midnight. He knew, grasping the feather, feeling it hurting his core essence, that he had little time or he would be destroyed by the feather if he held it for too long. He also knew the Everlong before him at that moment, was not joking and just as he finished speaking his thumb was already knocking the hammer back on his revolver. The sound of it was enough to prompt Troduc to leave immediately and now for real. The ground shook as he departed and a greenish column of fire rose to the sky only a second later from a great distance away.

“Pussy.” snorted Everlong, gently pushing the hammer of his revolver back to its natural state, holstering it, holding the black box in his other hand.

Hiyori, laying meters away, watching him, couldn't help but gulp as her heart raced, looking at him with a strange reverence hiding behind her gaze. She was shook back to reality by Everlong’s calm voice and smiling face.

“I got something we can put it into!” raised the black box “It’s a bit weathered but oh well, it will do!”

“Ahaha, you are such a bad person!” giggled Hiyori, standing up, rushing forward to him, ignoring the aches emanating from all around her body.

“Am I? I was dealing with a demon, I think I would be morally in the right if I would rob him blind!”

“What about your principles?” joked Hiyori as she would not even shrug if he really did kill Troduc and decided to rob his corpse. If he asked she would help him harvest the demon’s body parts too!

“Why do you think I let him have the feather?” smiled a little, before crouching down and scooping up the scale with the dirt under it, placing it into the box, closing the lid on it. “This will do! I was not lying when I said I only need the essence of it!” looked around, scanning the darkness, his eyes already used to it and saw through it just as easily as if it would be noon. “But I’m more than happy to extract it with care~” grinned as he led Hiyroi back to their car.

….

…..

Troduc was coughing and wheezing, as he was climbing down on the side of Mount Merapi. He was not doing it because of the fumes released by the active volcano but because he was greatly weakened by not just Everlong’s bullets but by still holding the feather quill in his hand. Arriving at the bottom, floating, grotesquely distorted group of cherubs were already waiting for him. As soon as they saw the feather, one of them simply burst into flames, bloating up like a rubber ball before exploding into nasty, gory chunks. The rest were screaming, clawing off their own faces, pushing their discolored, mutated fingers into their eye sockets with a squelching sound, just so they could stop looking at it.

Troduc said nothing, grabbing one of them and simply pushing the quill down its throat. He was mumbling in a dark, deep tone, the words that left its mouth for not from this world, even stopping the volcano’s rumbling behind him, as if he just ordered nature to shut up for a moment. The screaming, terrified cherub had little power to resist as a huge fist went down in its jaw, not that it remained alive for long to even think about it. When Troduc pulled his black, injured arm out of the cherub it was already dead, turned into a flesh container, hosting the quill inside of itself. Troduc was not in the mood to talk, with a wave of his hand, green flames consumed all his minions, leaving none alive.

“You all know too much.” whispered to nobody, shrinking down, taking up his thin, fragile appearance that now not just looked weak but he did felt like a sick mortal. Dressing up in the prepared clothing for him, holding his new fleshbag, he simply disappeared into the night, to who knows where, laying extremely low for years to come.
