Everlong arrived when the night had settled in for hours by then. Shaking off the snow from his hat and coat, hanging it up beside the door, he watched as Hiyori was sitting up on the couch, rubbing her eyes as she was woken up by his arrival.

“Had a good nap?” smiled, walking past her, rubbing her head like he would do with a little kitten.

“Mmmm, uhum~” moaned, closing her eyes with satisfaction, stretching, just like a cat.

“Did anything happen while I was away?”

“We have a new case! Well, if you nod to it!” hurried to his desk, presenting him the notes she took.

“Oh? Let me see!” take it from her with an interested look and seeing her detailed writings of the main points of Sheby he nodded at Hiyori with an approving glint in his eyes.

“Nice job! I don’t even need to ask you pointless questions!” leaned back in his chair, taking out a cigarette “She is right, taking a Warrior into our realm would take years to proceed through the official channels!”

“Because of its strength?” asked, sitting up on his desk with her blouse loosely buttoned, creased while she was playfully dangling her white legs.

“Partly.” replied Everlong, trying to fix her clothes up then her black, disheveled hair, without much success. “It is very rare when someone under the direct command of a Prince decides to leave.”

“From what I gathered from Sheby, they have a lot of others that are above them in the food chain!”

“That is true but even a Warrior is leagues above a demon who is not part of the direct lineage. Let’s take Troduc for an example! He was in Mammon’s camp. A supplier, someone who served his lord with collecting items. Still, one wrong thing he… let’s just say, acquired, forced him to seek Asylum here!”

“So he stole something he shouldn’t?” chuckled Hiyori, seeing it happen before her mind’s eye.

“Yep, from someone who later on became a freshly initiated Warrior of Mammon. From that point on, no matter how effective he was, the days were numbered before his head would separate from his body! In Hell there is only one rule; Don’t fuck with those from the direct liniage!”

“Like the mafia!” tilted her head to the right Hiyori, biting into her thumb, nibbling on it.

“Close enough~” nodded Everlong, blowing out smoke from his nostrils “Anyway, I’ll see what I can do, a Warrior indebted to me is always a good thing to have!” smirked, licking his lips.

“Sometimes you can really look like an evil boss from the end of a level!” giggled Hiyori, watching his face.

“Am I? And what level?” asked back by raising his eyebrows.

“Ah, doesn’t matter, you are not really into games, huh?” waved her hands, not even trying to explain it at all as it would be a pointless endeavor.

“Games… no, now that you mention it, I never had a toy, not even as a kid.” leaned forward, squashing his cigarette in the ashtray, his voice remaining unbothered.

“Saying it so calmly makes it even more depressing!” sighed Hiyori.

“Sorry~”

“Should we go and inform Sheby about your decision?” changed topic Hiyori, climbing off from his desk.

“Yes, I need to know this Jibil’s strength and what she can bring to the table! If she is someone we could use, I am willing to go and ask for a favor from Minister Otsuka.”

“And if she is not?”

“Too bad!” shrugged “Favors don’t come cheap! Anyway, come here!” waved at her and when she stood before Everlong, he took out a thin bracelet, shining in a faint, blue hue, wrapping it around her little wrist.

“How nice…” murmured Hiyori, blushing, watching him putting it on.

“Never take it off!” warned her with a serious tone suddenly.

“Not that I would…” whispered while nodding, looking into his eyes, guessing it was made from the scale they traded for as the hue coming off of it was almost identical.

“Good! This can save your life in a sticky situation!”

“Don’t worry, I won’t take it off! Ever!” nodded with strong resolution in her eyes.

In the home of Sheby, the demon was bringing a freshly brewed pot of tea to the small table before her couch. Pouring it out with still shaking hands, Hiyori thanked her, taking the cup away, while Everlong was watching the weakened demon finally sit down onto an ottoman.

“What do you want to know?” asked Sheby, her voice tired and weak, missing all of the vigor from the previous meeting of theirs in the same room.

“How long has she been a Warrior?” asked Everlong, holding a small notebook in one hand and a pencil in the other, looking like a real detective at the moment.

“Around… 300 years? Not 400… somewhere in between.” thought for a little “I came here 94 years ago, so… yeah. She should have been a Warrior for somewhere around 350-360.” concluded, thinking about it for a moment.

“Then she is in the upper echelon of warriors, surviving for that long!” noted it down with calm eyes “That is like bringing an armed nuke into our living room, you know!”

“I know… and she was aiming to become the Knight of her group, taking over the other’s position!” explained it further Sheby.

“Well, it seems she overdid it!” smiled Everlong, prompting the goat-like demon to sigh and nod.

“I don’t know the details, but when she contacted me, she said that she killed the Knight and now she had to go into hiding as the rest of her group was coming after her!”

“I thought things like that are usual in Hell!” put down her empty cup Hiyori “Fighting for position, someone disappears, dies or switches camps, the usual!”

“It is, but…” answered Sheby, trying to find her voice but Everlong finished it for her.

“Jibil has been set up.” tapped on his notebook with the tip of his pencil, leaving small marks on the paper. “There was another Warrior who had the same idea, aiming for the same position and set it up in a way, Jibil is going to be pursued for the kill. Now when he or she catches her, kills her and presents her head to the Captain, our preparator is going to be appointed as the groups’ new Knight!”

“Oh!” clapped Hiyori with realization “Now that is more Hell-like!”

“Jibil came to the same conclusion.” nodded Sheby after hearing Everlong’s words.

“What does she offer in exchange?” asked the detective “I can help. I can’t guarantee success, but I can pull some strings!”

“She said, if we can get her Asylum, she is willing to lure the one that aims for her head into a trap. His whole body and essence would be her offering for the right for Asylum.”

“Oh? A full corpse of a demon and one that could be even a Knight?” grinned Everlong “The Sigil Bearers would cry from happiness learning about it! They are paying sky high prices for only parts of demons of that caliber!”

“I know. That is why I suggested that to her to make it into an offering!” replied Sheby “It can be made into… a lot of things.”

“Okay, now we are talking!” clapped Everlong with a laugh “We’ll go and visit some of my connections, I’ll get back to you in three days.”

“Thanks.” nodded Sheby, escorting them out, watching the two leave, before going back to her couch, falling back onto it, moaning in pain, breathing with difficulty. After a few minutes a weird, bloody symbol appeared in her palm, raising it to her head. Sheby’s thoughts quickly flooded into the symbol as she communicated with Jibil, connecting to it on the other side, in Hell. “I contacted someone who can help us, Jibil! Three days and I’ll have more to say!”

“Three?” arrived the rugged, female voice from the other end, clearly out of breath. “I’ll try to survive… no promises though…”

“Try to stay low, okay? He is an annoying person but at least when he is on your side, you can rely on him! He is going to get it done! Even help you slay your pursuer!”

“Heh, a human? Slaying a Warrior? You spent too much time amongst them, Sheby!” came the thoughts through her palm, soaked in deep cutting sarcasm.

“You’ll see… just… stay alive, okay?” said again, not explaining further.

“Okay, okay… better than no plans at all! By the way… does that human have a name?”

“Everlong. Detective Everlong.” answered and after a brief pause a sigh came from the other side once again.

“Never heard of him! Well… whatever! I have no other options!”
