“So… am I really cursed?” asked Hiyori, after finally calming down and making some rational sense of what she just heard. Well, at least as rational as it could be.

“Yes. Everything that is based on the host’s negative feelings falls under the definition of a curse.” explained it to her.

“There are definitions of something like this?”

“Of course, otherwise I would have not been able to categorize and label things easily! My peers before me came up with it, I just follow in their footsteps. There are different levels of curses and a plethora of sub-categories but yours is a demonic one!”

“What?!” jumped in her chair, going a shade whiter in an instant.

“Any curse that is driving the target towards certain death is, in nature, demonic.” nodded, continuing his explanation.

“Somebody wanted… to kill me? I don’t get it!”

“I don’t know your circumstances yet to make a deduction about the origin of the curse!” shook his head “It is a possibility, but going by the thing that attached itself to you, I suspect you are only someone who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. You are a victim of circumstances and not the target of someone.”

“T-thing…? You… saw something? Ah!” realized who he was talking to when he turned way too commanding in presence.

“Yes. You are being haunted by a spirit that has already half-transformed into a demonic entity. Probably you are its last lunch, when it fed enough it would push you into suicide and finish its transformation.”

“Fuck…” gawked and did not know if she should cry in desperation or laugh at it.

“Here!” chuckled Everlong, taking out a cigarette, pressing it towards her, even lighting it up for Hiyori.

“Thanks…” murmured, taking a really deep sip from it, followed by a loud coughing fit before taking a second one. “I never smoked before…” explained, seeing his smiling expression, fumbling around with it, not really knowing how to hold it between her fingers, imitating what she remembered seeing from movies.

“It is a really bad habit.” chuckled Everlong, also lighting up one, blowing the smoke out from his nose “It kills. But when time is already ticking down for you, you start to see things differently.”

“Promising…” sighed with a defeated smile, once again, putting it between her lips, shutting her eyes and enjoying the aroma of it, how it burnt her throat and lungs before exhaling, already forgetting she could feel something like this. She felt like melting in the chair as this whole experience was on par for her with an orgasm. “This is so baaaad…” moaned, reopening her eyes.

“It is.” agreed Everlong but nobody could tell if he was speaking about the cigarette or about her situation.

“Am I really going to die? How long will this last? How long until I won’t feel anything again? How did you send that thing out of the room?” came question after question from between her lips. “Demons? Spirits? I have so many questions!”

“I understand.” nodded patiently, standing up and pouring something stronger for both of them and now Hiyori quickly grabbed after the glass, sipping on the cold whiskey, getting goosebumps as it traveled down her throat, burning her from the inside. Everlong said nothing, letting her enjoy the lost sensations, the things she was deprived from for long, long years. “Let’s get the basics down, so we can work out how you got yourself caught in something like this!” sat back, lighting up a second cigarette, giving one to her again “For now this room can be said to be your sanctuary. It can’t enter here, no matter what it tries! This is my domain, the only ones who can enter here are those who I give permission to! But as soon as you step out from this building, it is going to reattach itself to you.”

“Well… it’s something…”

“This should answer your first set of questions. Besides that I can see things because my mind has been opened up to them. After we find out the origin of your curse, I can dispel it. Doing that is also going to have the side effect of opening your mind up to the supernatural. There is no other way around it, you won’t be the same, ever again. You are going to see things that you did not, it is going to depend on your own efforts how you deal with it later.”

“Small price to pay!” said, taking big gulps from her glass as the alcohol loosened up her mood greatly. “I have been eating, drinking shit for years! I did not sleep by myself for more than a decade!”

“Hmmm… so, how old are you?” tilted his head, asking with honest curiosity.

“One month and I’m turning 30.” answered with a depressed tone “I’ll be a witch soon!”

“Heh!” chuckled Everlong “And they say I keep myself in good shape, you look way younger!”

“Thanks, I guess! Why? How old are you?”

“Older than I look!” groaned, stretching “Sometimes I can feel it in my bones too! Anyway, the fact that your growth has been stunned is an indication when it happened! Anything you can tell me about it?”

“Well…” took a deep breath as it was hard for her to recall those events. She spent at least two years burying it in her mind and now, after all these years, digging those memories up was something she was not looking forward to.

“If it is hard, we can postpone it. I can ask you different questions to determine its nature.”

No, no… It is just… I need a bit of time to… collect my thoughts!” said, falling silent again for a little bit. Everlong just leaned back, waiting patiently, watching her face, her eyes, drifting away from reality, losing their focus as she immersed herself in the memories of old, thought to be forgotten days. A happier time, when she still had family and still was a young, teenage girl, filled with dreams about her future.
