REI felt like he was being torn apart from the inside out. It’s like every cell in his body was being destroyed and then slowly deconstructed, again and again. He fell to his knees and hunched over.

He thought that would be the extent of the pain. But then, while he felt like he was being constantly made and remade, a burning sensation filled him. It’s like someone suddenly put him inside a big pot of boiling water. As if everything inside and outside was stewing.

He bit his lower lip to prevent himself from shouting. But it was no use. Because he couldn’t even feel the bite. Even though he hadalmost bitten a piece of it.

Sh*t! What the f*ck is happening to me?

“A-are you okay?” asked a trembling voice not far away from him.

Rei didn’t bother to look at the person who asked. He was sure it was the guard. After all, they were the only people here. Oh, there was also that guard in the gatehouse. He wondered if that guy was also given a trial.

Then a new wave of pain racked his body again. It seemed impossible, but what he’s feeling now was even more painful than what he felt earlier.

“D-do you need help?”

Rei wanted to shout at the other, telling him to just beat it. But he couldn’t even speak, much less yell, because of too much pain.

As seconds passed by, the pain just became more and more intense. So intense that he almost wanted to just die at this moment. But he didn’t die and the pain just continued to wreck him.

He didn’t know how long it lasted, but he just slowly got used to the pain. As if his body was already numb to it. So numb that Rei just hunched over on the ground and no longer bothered about what’s happening to his surrounding or even to himself.

In the middle of all this, that voice—which Rei now found very irritating—spoke again.

[The tutorial will begin in six hours. Everyone, please be prepared!]

Rei didn’t know how many minutes had passed. Or if it was really just minutes instead of hours. He wasn’t even sure if he heard that voice correctly. Tutorial? What tutorial? Nah, his brain was simply not functioning properly.

And where the heck was that Cato, anyway? Did that little guy just run away?

Should he just sleep? Yeah, let’s do that. Let’s sleep.

When he was about to enter dreamland, that childish voice finally spoke in his mind.

[Master!]

It jolted Rei awake. It was then that he realized that he no longer felt any pain. He jumped up like a spring. He stretched out his arms. Rei could feel that his body was filled with energy. He could probably run afew kilometers at his top speed without resting. He just felt… stronger.

He punched the air and did a side kick. Rei could see how his movement became much sharper. It even seemed like his attacks could cut through the wind, if that’s even possible.

[Do you know what’s happening?]–he asked Cato. [Not just with my body, but with what happened in that building as well? Was it related to the reason you couldn’t contact me?]

[I can’t give answer to all of master’s questions. What I know was that the notification and that voice have the same signal as that of the four cubes. After that first message, I felt a huge amount of energy suddenly surrounding the Earth. And the source of the energy was the four cubes. It’s almost like they made a net caging the whole planet.]

[I was afraid that this energy could detect me. If it did, it might consider a foreign existence like myself as a potential danger. This might harm you, master. The worst possible outcome would be you being eliminated by whatever or whoever controlled that energy. I couldn’t let that happen. So, I disconnected myself from you and forced myself to enter a semi-death state.]

Rei frowned after hearing that. So, what happened insidethat building was because of those four cubes? But if one considered the things that the voice said, it was quite clear that he was talking about all human on Earth. So, it’s safe to assume that the same thing, or at least something similar, was happening all around the globe.

Which would match what Cato just said about the cubesforming some sort of net around the planet. Because this would mean that the cubes were responsible for the sudden appearance of those monsters.

But the real question here was, why the heck was something like this happening in the first place?

[Wait- since you’re talking to me right now, does that mean this energy won’t detect your presence anymore?]–he asked after realizing that he almost missed that part.

[No, it won’t. I’m currently using my reserve energy to shield my existence. As long as I don’t connect to any device or intercept any signals, we’ll be fine.]

[What if your energy reserve is depleted? Wouldn’t that be dangerous?]–Rei asked.

[Don’t worry, master. I’ll think of something once that happened. For now, let’s focus more on this tutorial announcement.]–Cato said calmly. [What do you think could it mean?]

[Well, since that voice was using gaming jargon, then this ‘tutorial’ would be the event before the main game starts.]
