FOLLOWED by that notification, a red exclamation mark appeared on top of two people. One was a petite girl with shoulder-length brown hair and the other one was the plain-looking young man he noticed earlier.

It surprised Rei at first, but he also quickly calmed down. He just didn’t expect that this ability that he gained would actually tell him if there was someone with ability near him. He thought he would have to guess first who would have abilities. Or at least, be observant enough to know which one actually had an ability.

But Rei didn’t think that this would be a normal occurrence. This notification appearing was probably only because this was the tutorial. This game most likely just wanted the players to get acclimated to their abilities much faster.

And as if to back that up, a new notification appeared in front of him.

[As this was only the  tutorial stage, we will provide you with this kind of assistance and guide you step by step. The next time though would be only up to you.]

That meant that after the tutorial, Rei would be on his own.

Now, he wondered what those people who hadn’t gained an ability yet would do later once they had one. Would this game be ‘kind’ enough to help them navigate through it even though the tutorial was already over? Or would it let them deal with it themselves?

Rei shrugged. Not his problem. Being guided right now was probably just a small privilege for those who gained an ability after the trial. If that was the case, then he just had to take advantage of this given opportunity. So, he could better understand how his ‘Samaritan’ ability worked exactly.

Under the text asking him if he wanted to pick the two people as targets, there’s a [Y/N] option. He didn’t immediately pick an answer, instead he observed the two people first.

The girl looked like he was 17 or 18. She was standing beside a tall boy of a similar age. Based on their proximity and the obvious dependence the girl showed towards the boy, the two were siblings or in a romantic relationship. There was timidity in her eyes, obviously scared of what was happening. But it’s also quite apparent that she was trying her best to hold her ground.

The second target, the young man who looked ordinary, was standing there surrounded by six big guys full of confidence. He didn’t look strong. So, this confidence was almost out of place. But then again, he must be quite confident of his ability. It must be quite strong for him to not even show an ounce of nervousness.

Rei no longer bothered with the two and simply pressed ‘Y’ on the virtual screen. His slight movement attracted the attention of some people in the clearing. But he ignored them and went on as if nothing happened.

These people probably couldn’t see the virtual screen in front of Rei. If they did, then they would have already reacted the moment it appeared. This actually proved that everyone could not universally see these virtual screens that kept on popping. He could only see what’s appearing in front of him while others could only see what’s appearing in front of them.

That’s good in Rei’s opinion. At least he didn’t have to worry that someone would see what’s on his Status Window every time he wanted to check it.

After pressing ‘Y’, the texts on the virtual screen changed.

[A Good Samaritan or a Bad Samaritan—you can freely choose which of the two roles you will be for each of the targets. But remember that you only currently have a maximum limit of an hour to balance them out. Meaning once you successfully fulfilled one role, you only have an hour to fulfil the other one. If not, then please prepare for the consequences. This limit will increase by an hour every time you level up.]

[This will be the only time that we will detect if other players in your vicinity have abilities. You will be on your own the next time. So, please do your best!]

After that, the virtual screen disappeared.

So, right now, Rei only had an hour of time window between the two types of Samaritans. That’s short, in his opinion. After all, in order for each Samaritan role to succeed, he needed to fulfil some ridiculous requirements first. And those requirements were the problem.

He sucked at acting. He wasn’t even sure if he could get along with other people, even if he wanted to. With that condition, how could he voluntarily make other people trust him?

[Don’t worry, master. You don’t need to act like some hero for someone to consider you as one. Sometimes, a simple helping hand is all you need.]–Cato said as if reading what’s on his mind. [Which means you only have to appear when they badly need help. And then don’t ask for any compensation after. No matter what kind of expression you might show then, they would only feel grateful towards you.]

Rei digested what Cato said. He had to admit that the other had a point. Really, with things like this, Cato seemed more human than him.

[So, which one will you help and which one you will betray?]–Cato added, referring to the main prerequisite of Good Samaritan and Bad Samaritan, respectively.

Before Rei could answer, one of his targets suddenly walked towards him. It was the young man.

“You’re probably wondering why we’re staying here,” the other said. His voice was very soothing and very pleasant to hear. “There’s a barrier ahead. Probably separating us from the area with orcs. It will probably disappear once all the slots in this dungeon are filled.”

“I see,” Rei said. In this situation, saying less would be the best.

“By the way,” the young man leaned forward a bit and whispered in a low voice, “Can you tell me your ability?”

The moment that the other asked that question, Rei immediately felt a tingling in his brain. As if a needle suddenly poked it.
