After leaving the mayor's manor, Ruckus and I walked through several streets until we arrived at the front of a large building. It is four stories tall and has a big decorated wooden double door on its gate. All the people I can see from the windows and waves of laughter coming from them indicate this is a pretty lively place. After months of solitude, I am more than happy about this chance.

"Come in." Ruckus made a gesture with his hand, then pushed open the doors. With the doors open, the warm air and lights from inside rushed outside. It smells of herbs, meat, and mead. My stomach growled.

"I wonder the last time I ate a proper meal."

"What?" Ruckus asked.

"Nothing, just talking to myself." I followed Ruckus inside. While this was happening, Fluffy was quietly following us, I don't know if they serve animals in this place, but I can spare some coins for a proper meal for him too. We have been eating dried and smoked meat for quite some time. If that had any spices, I wouldn't mind, but only bland dried meat feels more like eating a piece of wood in texture and taste.

"Olive!" Ruckus shouted towards the innkeeper. "Give us two meal sets and some meat for the dog."

The innkeeper turned towards Ruckus and smiled. "Stop shouting, you damned fool. You ain't even drunk yet." He looked cherished to see Ruckus. I suppose they are good friends.

I followed Ruckus through the inn's restaurant. Servers were constantly bringing drinks and meals to the tables. A small group of drunks is sleeping in one corner. A performer is singing to a large group of people while drinking.

I smirked without my control. Who knows why, but I feel a familiar warmth from this place. "I can live with this."

We sat on bar stools in front of the counter. A minute later, a waitress came next to us with a plater filled with tankards and dropped two filled with alcohol in front of us. The liquid inside looks like beer but has a weirdly appealing sweet smell.

Ruckus looked at me with a tankard lifted into the air. "So, do you have something to make a toss, or are we just drinking."

"Just drinking today." I grabbed the tankard and began gulping down the liquid. It is most certainly a beer, I am sure, but it has a tingly effect on the tongue, and the sweet aroma is something I am not used to it. But it is, without a doubt, the best-tasting thing I put in my mouth in the last two months. I can almost shed a tear, maybe two, if the food is good enough.

Ruckus gulped down the entire tankard and hit the table with it. "Now! I still have a job to do. Erwin, my brother, let's make this simple, so we can both go our ways. Where are you from, and why are you here."

I did the same and finished my drink before talking. "Despite how much I like to tell you another story, I don't have one. Something a little longer than two months ago, I opened my eyes middle of the dark forest. Most of my stuff was gone, and I didn't remember much about what happened to me."

"You mean like money, weapons, and such?"

"Yes, these weapons and equipment I currently use. I either got them from monsters I killed or made from animals I hunted."

"It seems like someone knocked you out and dragged you to the forest after robbing some valuables. That carriage you saw, one that got attacked by goblins, was there a woman with books about magic in them. Of course, if you had a chance to investigate the thing vehicle the attack."

"Yes, I found the one riding the vehicle living, he told me that his daughter and wife got killed by goblins, and he added he wanted to die next to them and passed away shortly afterward. I found some books about magic and adventuring in the carriage but lost them sometime later to a monster attack on the cave I was using as a shelter."

Ruckus smiled sinisterly. "Good, so punishment hit those bastards after all. They, my friend, are not good people. He even lied in his last moments, maybe excepted you to dig some graves out of pity, but their job is this. They act like a loving family and take poor travelers lost near the forests, drug them, and sell their victims to all sorts of psychopaths. I was hunting them three months ago because they got too close to our town, but I am happy goblins got them before I could. Trash like them are not even worth the blade you dirty." So, if I had encountered them before they were mauled by a horde of monsters, what kind of wicked fate would be waiting for me?

"Shit, I got away pretty luckily, didn't I?" Of course, there won't be any law in this place! This world is not the one you know, and monsters, magicians, demons, and all sorts of sick people with the power they shouldn't have lurk in all dark corners. I am lucky enough to be armed and alive.

While I was busy thinking about all the horrible things that could happen to me, except being killed by a monster, a waitress dropped a platter with food and utensils, then refilled my tankard. "Eat well, sweetheart." She quickly moved to another customer to take their order.

I looked at my food, a large chunk of grilled red meat with some roasted vegetables on the side, but my pet didn't seem to get his food. Using the knife, I cut a piece from the meat and dropped the front of the wolf. I remember Ruckus ordering something for Fluffy too. He will wait until his meal arrives.

*****

Ruckus didn't talk to me about personal information anymore and began eating and drinking. Sometime later, he got up and joined the drunkards dancing in the middle of the inn. I think the last I saw him. He was dancing arm to arm with the soldier he punched at the gate. I suppose having so many happy drunks around is not that bad.

"You." A sound came from the counter. It is the innkeeper. "What is all this equipment and the wolf? Are you a mercenary?"

"You can call it some sort. I can do jobs for money, but I am not a mercenary. I travel around and do jobs when I need money. But my bones are getting too old for this, so I decided to settle down, but I got robbed, had to survive hell, and now I am here."

Innkeeper chuckled. "I suppose people like you get drawn to this place for some reason. Well, I know the drill. What you need is somewhere to sleep, eat, and drink. You will also need some basic necessities like new clothing."

The innkeeper surprised me. "Are people like me this common?" He is holding the meal for Fluffy. I grabbed the food from his hands and put it in front of the wolf. He began devouring it.

"Yes, not everyone can raise a sword for all their lives. I don't care about your past or anything. So I will move straight to the point. Rent for you and your dog for a week is ten silvers. Now, if I add meals for you and your pet, we can make a good deal. For fifteen silvers a week, I can cover your accommodation and food. You okay or not." I reached into my bag and pulled out the pouch mayor gave me. There were only two gold coins inside. The innkeeper looked at the coins. "So you already have two hundred silvers with you." So, a gold coin means a hundred silvers. Shit. If I had the money from that cave, I could cover years of accommodation.

"I think we have a deal." I placed a single gold coin on the table. "I have no intentions of going anywhere. So take much as you can from this."

Olive took the coin and put it in his purse. "Or I can handle one month of rent from this and order you some new clothes with the rest of the money." Well, that sounds even better.

"Cool. Now, I want to sleep. Where is my room."

"Ah, just thought you would never ask." Innkeeper pulled out a keyring from his belt, then gave me a simple key. "Top floor, the one at the end of the corridor. If you still can't find it, number forty."

I grabbed the key and nodded as thanks, then got up and began climbing the stairs to the upper floors. Fluffy is following me from behind. He looks happy and nourished. Well, he better be. Tomorrow, we will start looking for jobs. I don't have enough money to keep us two going for so long.
