Chapter 3, Genesis [3]

Erin walked out of the apartment, getting blasted by a wave of cold air, the sliding doors opening automatically for him. "To hell with this cold..." he grumbled, his face scrunching up from the sudden blast of cold; It was currently 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Putting his hands in his jacket pocket, he walked towards the giant rift in the sky. "...What kind of shit will come out of that?" He muttered to himself, staring at the rift; wondering what was on the other side.

Erin strutted across the city street, devoid of the joy and laughter that had filled it a few hours ago. Now the streets had an ominous, dark feel to them, as the festive lights flickered.

'Must be some kind of interference from the rift...Creepy...' Erin thought, as he stared at the flickering lights. Although he knew what the cause of the lights flickering was, he still got chills that shot down his spine.

Ruuaghh---

Heerouugh--

As Erin got closer he heard the alien sounds the rift made. Those sounds struck some kind of instinct deep within him, telling him to run.

"I have a bad feeling about this..." Erin muttered under his breath.

Getting a bad feeling, Erin started to break into a light jog. He could feel it, something definitely was going to come out of that thing, something dangerous. He knows that because he is trained in a unique martial art that heightens his senses, allowing him to sense danger beyond human limits.

As Erin reached the center of the city, he was quite surprised to see how well the U.D.U had prepared. "Damn Krov... you're actually taking this pretty seriously..." Erin said while letting out a sigh that held a tinge of relief.

The center of the city was quite large, probably able to fit two to three football fields within it. In front of Erin, was a large, plated fence that was fitted with bright blue laser shields between the metal posts. The fence stretched around in a wide circle around the giant rift that was forming in the middle.

Walking up to the gate, Erin waved towards two men wearing laser-proof armor, with laser rifles between their hands, guarding the entrance to the rift.

"State your purpose civilian." grumbled the man on the right.

"Oh, man! the U.D.U can't recognize Krov's best friend? Why don't you tell him, that Erin is here." Erin said, letting out a laugh. To be clear, he wasn't Krov's friend; In fact, they hated each other.

Krov sat at a desk in a building they had constructed within the fence that guarded the rift, which was constructed quickly; thanks to the advanced tech the Union had. It had the appearance of an office, with a nice office chair, and a desk that was cluttered with datapads and books. In the corner, was another desk, which Adam sat at, typing fiercely at the computer.

From the research Adam had done so far, they were able to detect that there were lifeforms on the other side, just sitting there like they were ready to burst out at any moment, and because of the immense electrical interference the rift gave off, they couldn't quite tell what the beings were, though they at least knew that they weren't human.

From what Adam told Krov, he knew that there was a high chance that these beings were able to manipulate mana, as mana has never acted in such a way before. Knowing that Krov couldn't help but wonder if the number of soldiers that were dispatched could handle them if they turned out to be aggressive.

"Twenty armed soldiers, Four grade six laser turrets, and four snipers..." Krov counted, as he looked out the window of his pop-up office. 'Shit..' He knew this wasn't going to be enough, though the President wouldn't allow anymore to be dispatched.

Krov stared at his phone, giving off an aura of anxiety and anger. He contemplated, on whether to not he should call that man. He knew that man could supply enough men, but just the thought of hearing his voice made Krov gag.

Krov turned his head over to Adam, who was currently immersed in his work.

"Adam, how much longer until the rift completely opens?"

Adam gulped, responding, "A-Ah... Ten m-minutes..."

Krov slammed his fist down on the desk, making Adam jump. He knew what he had to do... Even if it repulsed him so badly, he had to endure it. He needed those extra assets, as fast as possible.

As Krov was about to dial the number, a soldier walked into the room. With a confused look on his face, he looked over at Adam who sat in the corner of the room. "State your purpose," Krov asked, his sharp, cold voice snapping the soldier out of it.

"A-Ah yes, Sir Krov, a man has appeared at the front gate." The soldier said, clearing his throat.

"Send him away, it is probably some reporter. We don't need any distractions like that."

"He told us to tell you that it is your best friend Erin..."

At the sound of that man's name, Krov's blood pressure rose, gripping his phone too tightly causing the screen to crack. Seeing the reaction, the soldier gulped in fear.

"S-Should we s-send h-him away s-sir?" The soldier said, wishing he could get out of the situation.

Krov took a deep breath, his cold expression returning. "Let him in... I will come out to meet him personally."

The soldier nodded, getting ready to exit.

"Wait." Krov sharply said, piercing the very soul of the poor soldier.

"Y-Yes s-sir?" The soldier asked, irrational thoughts racing through his mind, such as; 'Is he going to kill me..?' 'Steve said that he will break the fingers of soldiers who disappoint him... Could what he said not be bull..?!'

"Tell everyone to set their sights on the rift, it's about to open."

The soldier sighed in relief, then darted out of the building.
