Chapter 31: Chap 31 – The anguish of a mother

Over the bodies, a man began to make his way toward Alessa.

Even if it meant stepping on the bodies of his subordinates, he continued to follow without hesitation.

He was wearing black clothing that covered almost every inch of his skin except for his eyes and mouth. He had dark hair that reached his shoulders and a beard covering his chin.

Despite his intimidating appearance, his movements seemed calm and collected.

"Who are you...?" Alessa asked.

When he heard her question, he smiled.

"My name is Nils. You can call me what you want. But I prefer to be called gluttonous."

"So you're the idiot who sent an assassin to kill my son," Alessa said with a murderous glare.

Nils didn't respond.

Instead, he simply walked closer to her, ignoring Alessa's gaze.

It appeared as though he couldn't care less about Alessa's anger.

Then he stopped before her, staring straight ahead.

"Alessa Tonhaed, the continent's most powerful magician," he thought to himself.

"What do you want here, asshole?" Alessa became angrier. 

"I'm here to stop you from messing with our plan," he said, blocking Alessa's path.

"Get out now!" Alessa yelled, her anger palpable in the sudden drop in temperature.

In a single moment, she was back in a fighting stance. 

However, despite her hostility, Nils showed no sign of fear or concern whatsoever. 

Then a chunk of the frozen ground shot up and smacked Nils. 

He has propelled a good distance away from where he originally stood.

But even after being hit by such a large piece of earth, Nils remained unharmed.

"How impressive..." Alessa muttered under her breath. Then she looked down at the chunk of dirt that struck him. "You are quite strong." She turned around and saw Nils standing there, smiling as if nothing had happened.

"Why don't we skip this nonsense? Let's get right into it," Nils said. 

Nils quickly got back to Alessa with his speed. 

"Damn it, I don't have time to waste," and she started using water magic to gather and condense the vapor into water. 

Then the water around her began to gather around her.

As the water around Alessa froze, it hardened into a beautiful ice armor made entirely of pure crystal.

The entire suit was formed over her body in a matter of seconds. The crystalline surface reflected light in all directions. It shone so brightly that one could see through it. and its color matched Alessa's complexion perfectly.

Once she finished putting together the whole set, she felt completely protected inside her new armor.

She took a step forward. 

And then another. 

Until finally, she arrived at Nils' position.

At first glance, she would have been mistaken for some sort of statue carved out of ice.

Her figure alone was enough to freeze anyone, and when Alessa moved, the sound of her footsteps sounded loud and clear. Her steps were filled with confidence, and they carried the weight of many years. They belonged only to those who possessed strength beyond measure—the strongest among them.

Alessa kicked Nils square in the tummy. 

The kick froze the armor, which allowed it to be broken.

"Ugh!" Nils let go of his stomach, letting loose a groan as he fell backward onto the floor. His expression was full of surprise; however, he soon recovered and rose to his feet again. 

"Impressive... but not good enough." Nils grinned. 

His smile revealed rows upon rows of sharp teeth. 

With his next attack, Nils aimed straight for Alessa's chest. However, instead of dodging the strike, Alessa simply blocked it.

"Gah! Damn it!" Nils screamed as the impact of Alessa's block caused his arm to snap.

Before Nils knew what happened, Alessa's fist connected with his face.

The force of the blow knocked Nils off balance once more, causing him to fall back yet again. This time, he landed hard on his ass.

Seeing Nils lie there motionless, Alessa approached him slowly, looking down at the fallen man.

beep beep

"I would love to keep fighting, but I already got what I wanted," Nils said as he left the venue.

"What did you mean?" Alessa asked, worried.

"I just wanted to buy time."

Alessa gave up hope. If their mission was to kill her son, that means...

"The first seal has been broken," he said quietly, but not too quietly to keep Alessa from hearing.

"...!"

Alessa ran quickly toward the forest and completely forgot about her fight with Nils.

"He must still be alive," she thought to herself.

Nils was relieved when Alessa vanished. Envy was right to put her as the number one danger to our plan; if she continued, maybe I would have died here.
