Just a few minutes before

To get to the camp, I ran as fast as I could.

When I got there, I saw Susan fighting a big monster by herself.

I hit him quickly with a block of ice. He fell back and then disappeared into thin air! The magic that he used was called invisibility or camouflage. It made people disappear for some time; however, it couldn't make them invisible forever because they still existed in reality somewhere else other than just disappearing completely.

"Stay alert, Susan," I said. "We don't know how long this spell will last." She nodded her head and continued to fight the giant wolf-like creature while she tried to figure out what we should do next.

After about five seconds, both creatures vanished from sight again. We waited until after a minute had passed so we wouldn't be seen by any more monsters on our way through the forest.

Why do these beings just vanish into thin air? To take any action, I need time to formulate a plan.

First, I need the plan to figure out where they are and where they can attack. Next is finding an escape route if something goes wrong with my plans.

I can use an ice-based area spell to find them, and if they have a physical body, that might work.

Because of the risk of harming Susan, I am unable to cast a spell at the same level as before.

First, I used a simple fog spell, and then I cast a water spell so that I could see through the mist.

Through that, I can sense their nearness.

While I had the chance, I put a spell on Susan to keep her from getting chilly.

Susan looked around and asked, "What's happening?" I explained everything to her and told her not to worry since I would protect her.

The two werewolves appeared again right away. They charged toward us, but I was ready for them.

This time, I created a shield between myself and Susan using ice magic. Then I threw a block of ice at one of the wolves. As soon as it touched his fur, he exploded into pieces. This happened to another one too when I hit its chest with a second block. Both creatures' bodies turned into dust and disappeared like before.

Now, only one remained, which seemed bigger than the rest. I readied my staff and prepared to fight against it.

It must have been waiting nearby for me to finish off all three of the others because now it came straight toward us without hesitation. When it did, I shot a block of ice at it, hitting it in midair.

Afterward, I noticed that Susan was shaking uncontrollably. I wondered why, so I took her hand and pulled her behind a tree.

She whispered, "They're coming!"

Then I heard growling noises outside of the bush. A moment later, I felt something grab hold of my ankle. I kicked hard and managed to knock the beast down.

In the mist, I could sense the presence of dozens of monsters. Keeping Susan safe now seems like a monumental undertaking. I decided to create a barrier between ourselves and the monsters.

I focused my mana on creating a dome-shaped wall of ice. I placed it in front of Susan and me. Once I finished making the wall, I concentrated even harder to maintain it.

The monsters approached the barrier and began trying to break it apart using their claws and teeth, but they couldn't manage to destroy it.

"Listen up, Susan: If things continue as they are, I won't be able to keep you safe. I'm going to clear a path for you to follow, but you need to get out of there as quickly as you can," I said.

Susan began sobbing and begging to stay and assist me. However, I knew that wasn't possible. There was no way I could protect her and defeat hundreds of monsters at once. So, I gave her a hug and said, "You'll be fine. You've done great so far."

Once she calmed down, I sent her running ahead. With my staff, I broke the ground and cleared a trail through the trees for her.

As I watched her leave, I thought, "Now, what do I do?"
