Searching in the garbage site

                                                                               

 

Inside the shack at the landfill, José tries to watch the news on the ancient black and white TV he found in the garbage pile. Unfortunately the image appears on and off and José tries pushing all the buttons and becomes more amore frustrated .he curses in all languages angrily …spits at the TV screen. Abraham and Michelle sit on the couch in the living room watching TV impatiently. Eve and Gideon are also watching the news curiously. Mickey and his friend Sheena are visiting Wally and his wife Eileen who just finished putting all the kids to bed and joins them with beer and refreshments. José disbelief when The TV suddenly comes to life and starts broadcasting a clear picture as if reborn. The anchor explains

"We are joined by Abraham Menis and Eve – Isaac's parents".

Isaac's picture appears on the screen. The anchor smiles again in embarrassment and tries to hide his own tears

"Thank you eve and Abraham…parents to Isaac…and of course my colleagues and I are sorry to hear this and would like to encourage you both! And now we move on to another story that also relates to the disappearance of Isaac".

Two pictures of Joshua appear on the screen smirking in his original picture without the beard and mustache. There is also another picture of the sketch the police made with the fake beard and mustache. A lightning bolt goes off inside José's brain. He now realizes why he walked around aimlessly. Mickey appears on TV interviewing from his office at the police station. He seems authoritative and expressive.

"Hello, my name is Mike…I am the Lt. in charge of the case of the singing pervert and the disappearance of Isaac…this is the suspect's picture for both investigations! We believe the suspect…Joshua Solomon is the singing pervert and the person responsible for the disappearance of Isaac. We ask the viewers to look at the picture and try to remember if anything strange occurred between seven am on Saturday morning until Sunday morning …any report will be welcomed. Isaac's parents are offering a 50 thousand dollars reward for any person with information that leads to finding Isaac. We are waiting for your input and trust the viewers help".

The broadcast is over and José turns off the TV. He holds the beer bottle that was on the table and goes outside watching the mountain of garbage in front of him frightened. He mumbles out loud

"I know that man…I've seen him before!! Saturday night at 4 am, he was here and left in a big black car! I've seen him with the beard and mustache; just like the picture by the police…I'm sure it was him! It was the pervert…maybe he murdered that boy on Saturday and came here to dump the body in the garbage because he knew no one would look for the boy around here"

He watches the bracelet on his arm anxiously.

"Maybe this is his".

Wally and his wife Eileen and Mickey and Sheena are lying on the couch watching "silence of the lambs". Eileen and Sheena are watching it for the first time and are riveted to the screen. They all seem tired after finishing off a large amount of beer and yawn in turns and funny voices. The unfinished symphony of yawns! Mickey's phone rings and frightens them all

"Yes…this is Mickey…what?"

Mickey's face is excited.

"Are you sure that’s what he said? OK, thank you"

Eileen, Sheena and Wally watch him curiously…they know something important just happened by looking at his face. Mickey is still excited and he lights a cigarette nervously. He watches their faces and suddenly screams hysterically

"Let's go Wally…we're leaving right now! Sheena, do you want to stay with Eileen or should I call you a cab?"

Wally stands in front of Mickey curious and nervous. He knows nothing was planned and doesn’t understand what's changed.

"What's going on? Where are we going? Nothing was planned for tonight"

Eileen says

"I suggest Sheena stay here until you return from your mission"

Mickey is tense and restless.

"OK, Eileen, thanks!"

He turns to Wally

"Listen up! Someone is claiming he saw Joshua and his car at the landfill on Saturday at 4am! Joshua must have hidden something in the garbage mountain and disappeared!"

Wally, Eileen and Sheena are frozen in place with their mouths open! They watch Mickey in disbelief. Wally mumbles

"I don’t believe it! You mean to say that son of a bitch killed Isaac, buried him in the garbage and keeps on lying to our faces saying it isn’t him? Claiming the police is framing him? Come on…let's go down there right now!"

The landfill seems brighter and more impressive than ever and is reminiscent of a human ant nest. It is lit up from all sides by giant projectors places on huge trucks. Dozens of cops surround the sight and prevent entry to the place. Squad cars and detective cars are parked at the location with their teams. A few forensic cars are waiting on call at the site. 5 diggers of various kinds are ready for work. Everyone is equipped with masks against the nauseating smell. A giant mobile 5 stalls shower facility is at the disposal of the teams. Two ambulances are standing by in case someone should faint because of the perfumed air! José is standing by the entrance to his shack, excited, confused and scared…he watches everything with eyes and mouth wide open…Mickey and Wally stand next to him. They also survey the sight with tension. Mickey receives a message on his radio

"Sir, everyone is organized and ready as you asked…what do we do now?"

"Thank you Johnny…we'll decide in a few minutes where to start digging! In the meantime everyone stay put!!" 

He turns to José.

"Now, show us where you saw the figure…let's hope this justifies the millions this is going to cost"

José starts leading them in the direction where the figure was standing when he saw her as Mickey signals the diggers to follow him. Wally decides to play a little with José. He winks at Mickey unnoticed by José.

"you know, José…you seem like a good man…I want you to know, that if we don’t find anything you're going to have to pay for all this equipment and for the men we brought out here" 

He jokingly adds 

"This totals up to about half a million dollars"

José stutters desperately and almost starts crying

"But I just wanted to help! I a poor homeless man! Where am I going to get half a million dollars? I'd be better of dead!!" 

Mickey and Wally almost choke with laughter

"Let go of me…are you crazy? I don’t want to go with you!! Look for someone else or I'm going to the police"

Mickey laughs out loud

"José…we are the police!!"

He hugs him and says

"Don’t worry...relax…you won't have to pay anything…we were kidding!!"

José starts laughing too…Mickey and Wally join him.

"You're not cops…you mad men…maybe now I'll show you the place where I saw Joshua"

José continues to lead them confidently until he reaches the supposed place. He reaches out a hand and points to the place.

"This is where Joshua was…you can tell your diggers to start digging here"

Wally signals the diggers to move closer and points to the place intended for digging.

"Start over there. Let the biggest one dig first…let's go! Dig carefully don’t damage anything"

The tractor starts digging carefully taking a giant load of garbage and laying it next to them! About 5 cops and a bob-cat assist in sorting the garbage placed to the side. Mickey, Wally, José and the other digger drivers seem nervous. They all wear masks. After about half an hour the garbage pile is 1 meter tall and 10 meters wide. After an hour and a half the cops assisting in sorting the pile look like a part of the garbage. They are tired and they reek! Mickey approaches them and sends them on a break.

"Enough guys! Go wash up, change your clothes and after you're clean go eat and rest"

The cops sigh in relief and thank him. Mickey yells into the radio.

"Johnny…bring me 5 more cops to help with the sorting…the first 5 are finished for now."

He approaches the tractor that is now 5 meters into the mountain of garbage.

"What's going on Danny? Did you find anything? Or can I go kill José and his folk tales?"

Danny shakes his head disappointedly. Wally pats his back and encourages the cops. Mickey holds his radio.

"Johnny, listen up!! I want all 5 tractors working together at full throttle…assign each tractor as many men as needed and change the teams every hour…I want all 5 tractors working together so I can keep an eye on them and on the sorting. Got it? Good! Let's go!"

The landfill turns into a busy place! Every once in a while the mountain looks like a bite has been take out of it and the new pile grows larger and wider quickly. After two hours a quarter of the mountain disappears into the new sorting pile but the cops have not found anything. A small amount of objects revealed so far is piled up not far from them. During the sorting Mickey and Wally show up and ask if anything was found. The negative responses drive them mad and they curse like angry frustrated whores in bitterness! Two more hours of sorting go by… the night sky is still lit and nothing is revealed. José walks back and forth in his shack, peeking out worriedly towards the tractors and Mickey and Wally

"Why don’t they find anything?? It's exactly the spot where the pervert was standing before he left! They have to find that kid so I can get the reward money! Fifty thousand dollars…I've never seen so much money in life!!! I can't even dream about that much money!!"

José is worried. He starts to feel something is wrong and unintentionally stares at the bracelet he found the other night. Suddenly like a flash of lightning he understands his mistake. He found the bracelet somewhere else, by the black van and not where this Joshua character stood before he walked back to his car and drove off.

"I need to tell them to look where I found the bracelet"

He freezes on the spot...

"But I can't tell them about the bracelet…they might take it from me. Some cop will say it's his and take it"

He sits on the velvet couch and thinks desperately.

"I want the bracelet and the reward"

Suddenly he smiles in satisfaction                         

"I know…I know what to do"

He leaves his shack and walks towards Mickey and Wally who seems frustrated. They nervously chain smoke. Mickey throws down the cigarette angrily

"I bet you that idiot is jerking us around…he thinks he's just going to get the reward because of his pretty eyes? Or maybe for his lopsided face? Instead of money he'll get jail time"

Wally notices José approaching them with an embarrassed tormented face. He smirks.

"Well lookie here…look who it is…talk of the devil and he shows up in all his glory"

Mickey turns around angrily to face José who smiles innocently. He thinks to himself

"I would like to kick his sorry ass…"

"What do you want? The money? Does it look like we've found anything?"

Wally tries to calm things down; afraid Mickey will lose it and kick José to hell and back. He hugs José

"We haven't found anything yet"

He whispers in his ear…

"He is mad at you…you better get back to your shack"

José wishes he could get away and like an ostrich hide his stupid face deep in the garbage but he quickly says

"I understand you're angry with me…but I just remembered I saw this Joshua guy somewhere else before I saw him here and from there he quickly climbed into his car and disappeared"

Mickey and Wally are revived…adrenalin starts coursing through their blood quickly! José stands at a spot still untouched by the diggers and points to it with his shaking hand...Mickey and Wally see the bracelet on his arm but take no notice of it!! Their thoughts, wishes and burning eyes focus on the garbage hill José is pointing at...Mickey screams hysterically

"Get over here now! I want you to start digging here!!"

Mickey, Wally and José stand together and point to the most important garbage hill in the universe! The entire team arrives and starts digging tirelessly! Half an hour later Mickey, Wally and José sit in the squad car to rest and drink coffee. Mickey watches José suspiciously.

"How did you suddenly remember that it wasn’t the right spot?? We've been digging here for 4 hours…so why now? Maybe you remembered you found something else? Maybe you remembered something else?"

José who already prepared himself for this question smiles in embarrassment and holds Wally's arm

"Please forgive me…I really did forget about the second spot...it wasn’t because I found something new…I was so sure that was where we should look"

And he points to the huge hole in the garbage mountain the tractors made.

"I was sure it was there…I kept thinking about the reward…but after I saw you searching so long without finding anything I started thinking about that night again and knew I was wrong about the first location!! I really am sorry…maybe if I was…"

Suddenly shouting can be heard from the digging team

"I think we found something…..we think we found a body!!! Mickey and Wally get over here!!"

Mickey Wally and José jump up and quickly run over…they pant and make their way until they reach the spot where a body is revealed! The gruesome sight is hard to take!! The tractor drivers, José and most of the cops present cannot bear the sight of the body and flee horrified. Some even puke their fears and distraught into a more fitting place…the garbage mountain!! Mickey and Wally put on gloves and face masks and bend down to examine the body. At first glance it seems time stood still; the earth shrinks down until it becomes an eye…god eye looking at grizzly sight of the beaten and battered body. Its clothes are torn and almost gone. All sorts of bugs feast on the wounds and decomposition began early for the body. Wally examines the hands and clothes curiously while Mickey focuses on the face that's lost all signs of humanity. The forensic team appears quickly.

"OK guys…start working the body thoroughly…inch by inch!! Canvas the area again, take all the time you need…when you're done, I want the report on my desk by 10 am tomorrow morning. Come on Wally…let's go…this stinks!!"

They both take off their masks and gloves and throw it in the trash! José approaches them like a peacock

"Huh? Now you believe me? You found the body…and I'll get the reward"  

Wally snaps at him

"What makes you so sure you'll get the reward?? What if it's not Isaac the boy we're looking for?"  

José retreats and pouts

"What are you saying? I'm sure it the kid the pervert took…you wants it to be him too right?" 

Mickey stops smoking and seems angry

"Enough you two!! Go to your shack José!! Go sleep! If its Isaac's body, you'll get your reward"

José turns around and walks back to his shack merrily. Wally smirks

"How can anyone be so happy when we find a body? Why is he so sure it's Isaac in there?"

"It seems to me he really is the winner of the reward! The body we just found has to Isaac's…I won't have any other way…Joshua is in deep trouble!! First it was kidnapping...now its murder…cold blooded murder".
