Father and I didn't do much together, other than preparing meals. Typically I did the chores unless he found my performance to be less than satisfactory. I could never do it quite right, he claimed. The only things truly required of me were keeping the garden alive and making sure my father wasn't inconvenienced by my existence in the house. Most days I preferred to sit in my room and read. I was doing just that when I noticed through my window that the plants weren't looking good. I set down my book and crept down the stairs and out the back door.

I walked slowly through the garden, my hands lightly brushing against the plants. I need to get some material to cover the rosemary, I thought to myself.

I strolled over to where I typically kept the gardening tools, but after shuffling through boxes full of trowels and hoes, I couldn't find the thick fabric I usually used to keep the frost from eating through my herbs.

Assuming father moved it, I walked through the garden searching for it. After pacing for a while I came to the conclusion that the wind must have blown it away. I scanned the perimeter of the forest just outside the fence and saw some white fabric stuck to a branch.

Found you.

I turned back to look at the house again. I could see father through the window in the kitchen. If he saw me outside the fence he would have my head, but asking him to retrieve the fabric for me would possibly cause a worse fate. I decided on the lesser of two evils.

I turned back to the gate and unlocked it, walking to the edge of the woods and reaching for the fabric before being interrupted by a movement in the trees.

I stopped suddenly, looking up to see a young man staring at me. We exchanged eye contact for a few seconds before he took off. I don't know what came over me, but I went after him. We raced through the forest. He was fast, but by some miracle, I managed to keep up. I swatted away branches and brush as I ran after him, feeling small scratches cover my arms and hands.

"Stop! Stop right there!"

He ignored my commands, continuing to run as fast as his feet could carry him. My eyebrows furrowed as I used the last bit of my strength to catch up with him and launch myself onto his back. We both grunted when we hit the ground. I grabbed his arm and pushed it against the opposite shoulder blade (A move I learned from a very fascinating book about martial arts, but I'd never had the opportunity to try until now).

"Who the hell are you and why are you spying on me."
