I clutched the newspaper in my hand, darting past the people in the village.
"Theo! Bring it back, Theodore!"
I looked back at the person chasing me, picking up my pace. I ran over the bridge and out to a dead flower field where I fell. My stomach and nose burnt, the former from laughing too hard and the latter from the crisp winter air.
"Okay, Cyrus, you can have it back now. Here." I tossed the newspaper over to Cyrus McCoy, who collapsed next to me.
"You are an arrogant asshole; You know that right?"
"Then why are you still my friend?"
We held eye contact for a few seconds before we both burst into laughter. Cyrus hit me on the arm with the newspaper I had taken before getting back up.
"Thanks for distracting me a bit bud, but Boss will have my neck if I don't get all these papers out by tonight."
"Yes Coy, you don't want to get on old man Butch's bad side. Rumor has it he's held a grudge against Mr. McConnell for over a decade over a cup of stolen sugar."
Coy laughed, waving the paper as he walked back toward the town. I lay in the field for a few minutes until he was gone. When I was confident no one was around, I started toward the forest behind the field. I had traveled this path so many times that I knew the way like the back of my hand. I followed the small markings I'd put up over the years, all of them too subtle to recognize unless you had been made aware of their existence. I pushed past the bushes and shrubs until I saw it. The farmhouse was a decent size, not too big but large enough to be comfortable. I crept around the branches until I had a view of the garden. And then I saw her.
Dark brown, almost black hair fell just past her shoulders. Today she was wearing a black dress with a square neckline, dark lace lining the edges. I watched as she inspected the plants. I stretched my neck trying to get a better look as the branch I was holding onto snapped. I ducked down, peeking out a bit to find her looking in my general direction. She turned her head slightly back and forth, seemingly searching for the sound. After a bit, she returned to the house.
My heart was racing. I knew I was getting too close again, but I couldn't help it. It had been too long since I had seen her (almost 2 weeks), and I was growing restless. I waited for a moment to see if she would return but after a while, I decided to head back to my home in Bristleton. Due to my idling, It was after midnight before I got back. I don't particularly like being in the village, let alone my own house. I walked in slowly through the side door. My attempt at being sneaky failed miserably. As I passed the threshold I saw my mother waiting for me in the living room. I winced as she slammed her hand on the table next to her.
"Theodore. Why were you out so late? Again. This is the 3rd time this month I've caught you coming in past dark."
"I'm sorry mother. I was just messing about in the forest outside the village. You know I like to feed the animals during winter." My mother's eyes were glaring sharply into my face, scanning for any signs of dishonesty. I didn't dare look at her, but I could feel her stare.
"It won't happen again. I swear it." I finally raised my eyes to hers and pleaded. "Just please don't make me help dad clean the library again. My nose was filled with dust for a whole week last time."
My mother shook her head in disappointment, walking past me and towards the stairs.
"Theodore Saxon, you will be the death of me."
