Darkness.

…No, that’s…what?

Maybe it was due to her ill-fated connection with the darkness element, Aurora sensed the moment the atmosphere turned heavy. And she was probably the only one who noticed it.

An ominous, dense aura blanketed Lillian’s entire body.

‘What…is that?’

It felt disgusting and sinister.

It was a similar yet distinct element from darkness. It was as if it distorted the air around Lillian. As though it did not have a definite form.

“Ah. It reminds me of what Gaius and Lucius said before about the ‘erosion’ from the Corrupted Region.”

[ “It’s not mana or darkness. If one has to describe it, then ‘nothingness’ would be appropriate.” ]

It would make sense if Lillian had the core of a beast implanted inside her.

Aurora narrowed her eyes.

Is it the same energy as the void? Why was the energy from the void and Corrupted Region so similar?

Aurora flinched when she saw Lillian pull back her arrow.

“I should take care of this first.”

The five minutes are almost up. They were now on their 5th lap. And Lillian…

Aurora glanced at Lillian’s arrow.

Lillian was aiming at her. And she was aiming for a fatal blow at that.

While Aurora was not interested in this class at first since this has nothing to do with her summoning research, she found that she could probably learn a few things from Professor Ingsen after observing the students at the beginning.

“Now then…what to do?” Lillian seems to have lost control of her emotions. Otherwise, she wouldn’t do something this reckless.

At this rate, the Professor, or maybe even a student, might feel that something was wrong. Fortunately, the pure killing intent coming from Lillian was like her bow and arrow. Its target was only one person. Aurora. This might be why even the horses, which are said to be sensitive to such lust for blood, didn't react to it.

Still...if the truth about Lillian got out, wouldn't Aurora be able to leave the academy? The perpetrator of the murders will be arrested, and the Duke would no longer have to worry...but...

Aurora recalled Lucius’ expression as he told her about Lillian the first time. Even though it was a cold expression, his eyes filled with pain and sadness said otherwise.

[ “Lillian made it to the final round, and her last opponent was Deon. Her master and friends told her to give up because every single one of Deon’s opponents died at his hands. Gaius also begged me to stop her, but I refused. I told him it was her decision to make." ]

[ “Although her life was spared, because her dominant hand was crippled, she will no longer be able to hold a sword.” ]

[ “To me, she was only a tool to be used for the sake of the Rizar family. Nothing more, nothing less." ]

Despite saying such a thing, Aurora saw right through him from the start. He always considered both her and Gaius like family, though he refused to voice these thoughts out loud.

“Sigh…then it can't be helped. My job here is to collect any evidence I find out about Lillian and nothing else. Only Lucius has the right to make a decision.”

Since the point of this skirmish was to prove myself, as the Professor said before, winning or losing does not matter. Which meant finishing the race did not matter.

“Fine. Then I can only do this.”

While it seemed like Aurora took a long time thinking about various matters, it was only but a few seconds as her thoughts raced. Still, that was enough time for Lillian to release her bowstring.

Aurora glanced at the oncoming arrow.

She swiftly took an arrow out from the quiver from her back. With her bow pointed towards the sky to not hit the horse, Aurora then placed it on the grip. After securing the arrow on the string, she aimed at her target and pulled the bowstring back.

Lillian saw this but scoffed at Aurora's futile attempt to avoid the inevitable. 'It is too late.'

The arrow will pierce her heart.

But of course, things didn’t go as she expected.

*swish*

Aurora tumbled back and fell backward off the horse just as the arrow reached her. But just before she fell, no one noticed the corner of her mouth lifting into a smirk.

Lillian was so shocked that she did not notice the arrow Aurora released just before she fell back.

“Oh!!” The students gasped in shock.

Professor Ingsen started running towards Aurora the moment this happened. “Someone go call the priest and doctor!!”

But before they could react, another frightening thing occurred.

*PLUNK!*

The arrow Aurora released pierced the ground right in front of Lillian's horse. Startled, the horse reared back on its hind legs, throwing Lillian off. She did not have enough time to protect herself as she was caught off guard.

A loud sound rang out, like that of a stick breaking into two. And then a sudden scream of pain. “AAAAAHHHHH!!!!”

“My goodness!!!” The female students shouted in terror while two male students ran to the academy building, and the others ran towards Lillian.

Everyone thought that a horrible accident had just occurred, but the Professor saw otherwise.

'An accident? No.'

Elliot saw the whole event play out from beginning to end.

When the Professor reached Aurora, he examined her as she had passed out. Making sure no one else saw him, he put his hand on the back of her head.

Elliot closed his eyes as his palm started glowing. Fortunately, it was small enough that no one noticed. Once the light disappeared, he opened his eyes and sighed in relief.

While Aurora was unconscious, it did not seem like she was too hurt. She wasn't bleeding, and there was no internal injury. Or rather…she’s completely fine?

The Professor snorted. ‘She’s pretending.’

Aurora’s mouth twitched, but she kept her eyes closed. ‘Did he figure it out?’

Ignoring this cunning girl on the ground, the Professor turned to look at Lillian.

Elliot’s usual bright brown eyes turned dark. He coldly stared at Lillian as she cradled her arm in pain. “What a ruthless child. I should have killed her even if the headmaster told me not to.”

Aurora. ‘……......What?’

What did she just hear?
