“?????” Bridget didn’t know why Aurora asked about her age but didn’t mind it either. She only wanted the book. “So, it’s fine, right?”

“…Yes. But there are two conditions.” Aurora held up a single finger. “You must answer all my questions without withholding anything and never turn me away. And you can only borrow it after I finish with my research.”

She waved her hand. “That’s easy enough.” While she really, really, realllllllly wanted to take it now, this might be her only opportunity to get her hands on it. Waiting was not a problem.

Putting on a smile, she faced Aurora. “How can I help you this time?” The annoyed expression from the Professor earlier vanished with a puff of smoke.

Aurora opened the book to the page she bookmarked that showed the symbol of a single rune and had written text below it.

“This rune reads as ‘light’, but I compared it to the other ‘light’ rune I know, and it’s not the same. Is this really another ‘light’ rune?”

Bridget studied the rune on the page. She traced her eyes over each stroke. “It’s amazing that you were able to tell since the difference is slight….but yes, you’re correct. This isn’t the rune for light.”

“Then?”

“It has been a while since I saw it, however, yes…yes, yes. It should be the rune for ‘enlightenment’. How nostalgic…”

“Enlightenment?” Aurora asked, perplexed.

“Yes, but it’s only a rough translation. This rune has one true meaning and yet also many meanings. Enlightenment is a broad word with various connotations depending on your comprehension of it. Light, insight, illumination, awareness...are all with similar meaning but different uses.”

Aurora’s brows furrowed. “It says here that only those who truly understand this rune can utilize the full power of runes without a [limit] and become its master. Is it possible to use rune magic without a limit if one can comprehend this single rune?”

“Yes, but not necessarily so. Do you know about the connection between runes and Gods?”

Aurora nodded her head. “Runes are said to be the language of the Gods.”

The corner of Bridget’s mouth lifted. “Oh? Not many students are aware of this. It seems like you have a good teacher. Then do you know about the connection between runes and Witches?”

“A Witch who gained the blessing of a Supreme God revealed the basic 33 runes to humans and how to use it.”

Bridget crossed her arms. “Right. Then did you know that Witch with the blessing could use the true power of the runes?”

 “…Yes?”

“This isn’t because she had the all-powerful black mana core. In other words, it had nothing to do with her nature of being a Witch.” Bridget stood up and moved towards the chalkboard. She drew the rune for ‘enlightenment’ on the board.

“After studying the enlightenment rune, I found that it greatly resembles this word.” Next to the rune, she wrote two words in the original language.

Divine power.

“Divine power?”

“Yes, do you see the resemblance?”

Aurora studied the rune and the two words. She couldn’t quite see what the Professor did.

“Well, it’s quite normal that you can’t see it so quickly.” She said as she erased a few letters from the words ‘divine power’. “After all, it took me a few years to figure it out myself.”

After leaving three letters, Aurora finally saw it.

Eihwaz. The rune for enlightenment.

But that wasn’t the only thing that left Aurora speechless.

Professor Belsant continued mixing up the words. “And if you separate the rune for enlightenment into three, you’re left with these three symbols, which are the runes for…”

Aurora finished her sentence.

Dagaz fehu kaunaz. Intuition, fire, and purification.”

The Professor glanced at Aurora. “Yes. Which is roughly translated as ‘purifying the soul through fire to attain knowledge’. The 'fire' in this case represents the meaning of trials."

Aurora clutched her chest as those three runes resonated with her. Even though it wasn’t her first time seeing those three runes, it was her first time seeing them together. It felt familiar…and comfortable. As though it meant something to her.

“…Are you okay?” Bridget asked, concerned with the young lady’s strange reaction.

Aurora nodded her head. “Please continue.”

While she hesitated first, Bridget decided to explain the rest after seeing Aurora seemed fine. “I came to a conclusion based on the connection between the enlightenment rune and divine power, but after seeing the text in this book, I’m sure of it now.” She traced her hand over the text that described the enlightenment rune.

“Those with the blessing of a God have their mana convert into divine power to use said blessings. And the Witch who received a blessing used the true power of runes. Thus, in accordance with the book, ‘those who truly understand this rune can utilize the full power of runes without a [limit] and become its master’ isn’t simply talking about the ‘comprehension’ of the rune, but its attainment.”

“…Can you put that in simple terms?”

Bridget laughed. “Only those who have divine power can use the true power of runes.”

“I see. Then it’s useless.”

The Professor blinked her eyes. ‘Useless?’

"If the people knew about what we just discovered, they would be shocked. Blessings from Gods may have disappeared along with the Gods, but there is one person in the Empire who can use the true power of runes."

The Saintess of the Imperial City Holy Temple.

“Thank you for your time.” Aurora slightly bowed her head. "Ah, and please keep what you found to yourself." Aurora left behind a dumbfounded Professor. She doubts she will ever come to understand this young woman.

Aurora walked with her head hung down in deep thought. "If only I can use rune magic without a limit, I can finish the summoning array."

She wasn't sure if it would eliminate her status as a familiar, but it wouldn't hurt.

“Still, it was not all meaningless.”

Thanks to Professor Bridget, she found a clue to help her take the next step.
