Amidst a spacious room, a drawing of a large circle on the ground with strange scribbles and symbols was visible. And sitting in the middle was a young, beautiful (well, not at this moment) lady bent over with her bottom swaying in the air as she incoherently mumbled while reading over a book and writing on the floor.

That young lady was Aurora Isla, the current fiancé of the Duke of Rizar.

With her long brown hair loosely spilled over on the floor in front of her and dark baggy eyes, the once elegant and cold lady was, unfortunately, nowhere in sight.

Aurora Isla’s lab was no different than the other students. Materials with labels such as “a catalyst crystal core of an E rank evolved beast” or “the blood of a mutated beast” were sealed in containers.

It was the perfect space for one to hole themselves in. Filled to the brim with books, paper, rune parchments, and including a sleeping area, what more can a magic theory researcher hope for?

And thanks to what her senior told her, Aurora didn’t have to attend her other classes for two months.

“You know how students in this department only have one main class, right?” When Aurora nodded her head, her senior grinned. “There’s a good reason for that…If a student feels like they are on the verge of a breakthrough in their research, they can fill out a form requesting leave. But you can only do so three times every semester for a total of six months, and you must submit a research report after the end of your leave. Some students use all six months at once, while others break it evenly for two months at a time. I suggest you use your three chances wisely.”

Taking advantage of her senior’s wise words, Aurora only used up two of her six months just in case.

“In the first place….” She muttered as she glared at the array.

“The problem isn’t the [limit] placed on the runes or sigil….”

“……That’s why...…”

“Then if I do this….”

She erased a part of the array and wrote another rune.

“No….it’s not like that….” She ruffled her hair, making it even more…well, messy.

Back at the Duke’s mansion, it took Aurora quite a while to adjust in drawing the summoning array since everything was new to her. Writing the runes without making a single mistake was demanding enough on its own, but she also needed to consider the input-output ratio of the materials used.

For example, the chalk she was using for the array.

Aurora frowned as she scribbled a few more runes using the specially made chalk in her hand. The chalk and ink used to inscribe runes made from similar materials also share another common ingredient, pelagikos, a tiny creature that lives in the sea found in the Corrupted Region.

When drawing certain symbols or runes, the pressure you put behind each line makes a difference.

“Each line matters….right….”

She recalled Professor Belsant’s advice about how the meaning of a rune differs upon the preferred outcome. While you can only write a rune in one way, they each have various nuances. How? By attaching another rune with it.

But you can't just attach any runes. They must share the same wavelength. In other words, they must have similar meanings. With the rune having a similar meaning, they share the same wavelength, thus altering the outcome.

The restriction placed on Aurora when wanting to summon a familiar is [contract]. Even though she does not take mana from Lucius due to not needing it, since she has a connection with Lucius through a [contract], she, herself, can not make another [contract] outside of her summoner.

A contract between a familiar and summoner is not only defined as a companionship. It is a partnership with a give and take relationship. A spirit beast needs mana to use magic and maintain its form in the human world. The spirit beast will protect the summoner in return for the summoner providing mana.

What Aurora wanted to do was make a temporary contract. The Familiar will only protect the summoner when called upon and return to the spirit realm afterward.

“A temporary contract is still a contract. If I attach another rune to the [contract] rune with a similar meaning, it will change the output."

Like the Professor said, each rune has various meanings depending on the end goal.

"In that case...what is another rune that is similar to contract? Hmm...ah! Hehehe..." She erased a few runes here and there while laughing eccentrically.

“The rune [contract] will now have the meaning of [agreement] by combining those two.…. Now, all that’s left is to write the conditions of the agreement.”

The median as mana will stay unchanged, but the [time] of the [agreement] will change to until the [summoner no longer needs the protection of that familiar]. As before, the [agreement] will complete when both summoner and familiar accept the terms and the summoner gives the familiar a [temporary] name.

Aurora stood up and grabbed a dagger. She stood outside of the array and took a deep breath.

A Priest usually confirms, records, and reports the rank of the summoned familiar, and the Rune Mage lays out the summoning array. After all, who can perfectly set up a summoning array than someone who studied runes for most of their lives?

But for Aurora, a Rune Mage was not necessary.

Lucius Rizar taught her the basics about Rune Magic, and Gaius Lancaster, her instructor, added another layer of knowledge. With those two amazing people, one a Duke and the other a former Rune Mage/current blacksmith, what more did she need?

Aurora herself was close to gaining the title of Rune Mage.

“The incantation is the array.”

Aurora moved the dagger to cut her fingertip.

“The median is my mana, while the main ingredient is my blood.”

A few drops of blood spilled on the summoning array.

“I, Aurora Grannis Di Epheria, a Witch of old, request an agreement to the spirit who shines light upon the darkness. Heed my call!”

The summoning array started glowing a bright and beautiful golden color.

Aurora grinned widely when the array activated.

It worked!

She focused on her sigil, as it was the catalyst to finish the activation to offer her mana as part of the agreement.

A white ring hovered around the summoning array.

Gaius told her that the rings that appear during the summoning ritual are spirit rings that represents the rank of a spirit beast. A max of 5 spirit rings can form.

White for the lowest level 5 rank.

Green for a rank 4 familiar.

Blue for rank 3.

Purple for rank 2.

And red for a rank 1, Sacred Familiar.

Lucius told her that a strange phenomenon occurred during her summoning, where numerous gold spirit rings formed after the 5th one. He has the High Priest Abel and Rune Mage Dorsen looking into it, but they have barely found anything.

He has the High Priest Abel and Rune Mage Dorsen looking for the cause of what happened. While Abel found an ancient book that might help, he was having trouble decoding it due to the old language.

Lucius explained that he wanted to keep this from her until they found the reason but decided against it after Aurora told him her true identity.

Aurora once again focused on the array...five minutes passed since it activated.

Ten minutes….

Fifteen minutes passed.

????

Did she fail?

As Aurora waited for the other rings, nothing happened despite waiting a full hour. And then the summoning array slowly lost its glow until the light all but vanished.

????

And not a single spirit beast appeared.

“Hey!” A tiny, squeaky voice called out.

Aurora titled her head. ’Where did that voice come from?’

“Hey, you! Why are you ignoring me when you’re the one who called me??!!!”

Aurora looked around the room and then paused when she saw something tiny hovering in the air. She leaned forward to get a closer look.

A small black flying insect with two wings, antlers, and four arms crossed glared at Aurora.

“Yeesh, how dare a puny human ignore the great me?!”

“…….A bug.”

Aurora hung her head in defeat.

‘It was a failure!’
