>>> Half an hour later. <<<

“………” Aurora.

“………” The bug.

(* ̄︿ ̄) “Hey, how long are you gonna stay like that?!!”

“It’s a bug…” Aurora muttered, deeply disappointed as she sat in a corner with her legs tucked in and her head on her lap.

“I’m NOT a bug!!”

She raised her head slightly and stared at the insect. “Then, what are you?”

“Oh? Are you finally interested in the great me? I will tell you!” It raised its tiny head up. “I am the great monarch luminescent glowbug!!!! Bow before me, human!”

“Glowbug….so, you ARE a bug….”

o(一︿一+)o “The great monarch luminescent glowbug!!”

Even though his arrogance was enough to reach the sky, his voice was that of a cry. “Haaaah. The great monarch luminescent glowbug, what can you do?”

“Humph, you finally asked! Watch and be awed!”

Aurora’s eyes brightened a little at this. Maybe it's not so bad.

A thousand years ago, there were times where she met spirit beasts whose rank did not match their abilities.

But her thinking changed the moment the glowbug revealed its ability.

“See?!”

“………What?”

“What, what?! Don’t you see it?!”

Indeed, she does see something. She does see it…but…

Aurora glanced at the glowbug, whose tiny body glowed a faint light.

“…Is that it?”

The glowbug blinked its beady eyes. “That’s right. Amazing, right?”

“Oh. Can you make my body glow like that?”

It blinked its eyes again. “Are you an idiot? Why would you want your body to glow???”

Aurora ------> ( ̄_ ̄|||)

“Right, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”

Aurora buried her head in her lap again, so her voice came out muffled. “What is it?”

“It seems like you don’t want to sign an agreement with the great me, but is it alright to continue giving me your mana? Almost an hour has passed. Aren’t you planning on calling for another familiar?”

“Sighs. Did you not hear what I said when you answered my call? Losing this paltry amount of mana is worthless to me since I am a Witch.”

“A Witch?!” The glowbug flew close to her. “Wow! I thought Witches went extinct?! Amazing! Oh, but I did hear that there is another Witch alive." The bug kept talking and talking with no end in sight. "Still, how strange. I don’t sense that you have a lot of mana…Ah, but if you are a Witch, why are you using what the humans use when making a summoning array? Uhhh, they call it ‘sigil’. Why use that?” The glowbug flew back to the array and circled it. “I thought Witches can use mana?”

“It will not activate if I use the same method from a thousand years ago. I already tried.”

After all, most of the arrays back then were not used for summoning but rather to subdue a spirit beast and make a contract with it. Since spirit beasts used to live in the same world as humans, all one needed to do was catch or get the approval of a spirit beast to make a contract with it.

The one Aurora made from back then used materials that no longer exist.

“If you get rid of that chalk thingy and just use your mana, it might work!” The glowbug flew around the chalk. “The energy coming from the chalk is that filthy erosion from the black region, right? Spirit beasts hate it!”

Black region? Is it talking about the Corrupted Region? “If spirit beasts hate it, why do they form contracts with humans as familiars?”

“Ummm….the Spirit Lord told us to….protect humans? I think…and something about how we need to feed the spirit tree mana to make sure the spirit realm doesn’t collapse. Anyways, if you get rid of it, the spirit beasts will all like you!”

“That doesn’t solve the problem. All it does is make the spirit beasts happy…it doesn’t change….” Aurora paused.

There is a [limit] placed on all runes due to not having [divine power].

But that isn’t the only [limit]. There is a [restriction] placed on the sigil to keep humans from overusing their sigil and going out of control. Both three and five-layered sigils have a type of [restriction].

Unlike runes and spirit magic, summoning and then feeding a familiar uses a massive amount of mana. Usually, it's fine as long as you use the standard summoning array created by the Magic Research Institute. But the more complex the array is, the more mana is needed. Just like how high-level spirit magic needs more mana.

Aurora’s original array is as complex as one can get.

“The sigil IS the problem!”

Aurora quickly stood up, surprising the glowbug.

While she has a powerful triple attribute sigil, it still cannot completely tap into her black mana core due to the [restriction]. Since she needs a large amount of mana due to the complex array, she will need even a lot more to summon a higher-ranked spirit beast.

Then she needs to find a way to counter the [restriction] rune. But, doing so meant she could lose control of her mana again. Since she was only able to reign in her mana, there is no telling what could happen.

The explosion that occurred when she first used her sigil might triple in power and destroy the entire Carlisle Academy.

“Heh. No use worrying over it. What better way to practice than putting it into use?" Since this academy has many talented professors, they will surely protect the students....right?

Aurora looked over the array and found what she needed. She dropped to one knee and after erasing a rune, she added another one.

“Hey, what are you doing?” The glowbug asked curiously.

“All runes have more than one meaning. If I add the [maximum] rune that is the same as the [limit] rune, it will counter the [limit] rune on the sigil, and the array will gain access to the maximum amount of mana from me.”

The glowbug looked confused. “What about the chalk?”

“I don’t have time to worry about that now. It’s not like it will cause a problem with the array itself.”

“Humph!” The glowbug pouted. “You’re selfish and greedy! In the first place, who do you think you are to call out any spirit beast you want?! Humans should all be grateful for us spirits to answer your calls! You should be happy with whatever spirit beast you get!” The glowbug crossed its arms as it scolded Aurora without noticing that its voice was getting fainter.

Aurora waved her hand as she watched it disappear without it knowing.

“To think a Witch like you want to control what rank and element of a spirit beast you can…. Hey, why are you waving your hand? What’s this….?" The glowbug looked down at its body. "How dare you...you...you Witch!!! Wait a second….don’t cut me off….sign a contract with meeeeeeee!!!!”

Aurora sighed in relief when it finally left.

‘Now then, time to finish this.’

And she didn’t just mean the array, but her time here at the academy. With the array completed and the evidence against Lillian collected, there was no reason to stay here any longer.

“But I feel like I'm forgetting something important…”

Unfortunately, her using the Princess of the Ignis Kingdom as bait for the monster called Lillian, was something she would not remember until much later.
