The entrance was a large hallway with pillars and stained-glass windows of different colors.

The great hall of the temple had a floor paved with marble, and hanging above was a massive crystal chandelier. It could easily fit the hundreds of people who entered and yet still feel spacious. The citizens waited there until the double doors to the chapel opened, as the members of the church attended to them.

A person wearing a grey robe approached Lucius and Aurora the minute they stepped inside. He had long been informed of the Duke visiting the Temple in disguise with a young lady.

“May Goddess Alafia bring you peace and harmony.” The man bowed as a greeting. “Welcome to the North Holy Temple. I am here to guide you to High Priest Mikhail. Please follow me.”

Lucius nodded once, and the two followed behind the man as he led them down a different hallway that was narrow, though long.

Aurora, whose first time it was in a Temple, was like a child as she bobbed her head up and down, left to right. Lucius found that she quite different from his first impression. Calm and indifferent. Rather, the more one spent time with her, the more expressions she inadvertently revealed.

“Why are the Priests wearing different color robes?” Aurora mumbled. She wasn’t asking anyone specific, but she was just voicing her curiosity out loud.

Hearing her question, the man wearing gray robes glanced back at her. That was something even children knew. But as a person of the Holy Temple, it was his duty to answer.

“The robes represent the different ranks in the Holy Temple. Apprentice Priests, known as Deacons wear grey robes. Priests wear white and green robes, the Holy Lady wears red robes and the High Priests wear white and blue robes. The Saint of the Sage Temple wears either white robes or white and gold robes, while the almighty sacred leader, the Cardinal, wears gold robes.”

By the time he finished explaining, they reached another set of double doors. “Please go inside. He is already aware of your arrival.” The Deacon left without saying anything more and disappeared around the corner as though he was never there in the first place.

Lucius opened the door and stepped inside, with Aurora following right behind.

A man wearing white and blue robes stood inside the middle of an empty room with red carpet. With black hair and dark eyes, a slim and tall muscular build, he looked nothing like a Priest. The long scar over his left eye down to his chin made him even more intimidating.

He placed his right hand over his chest and bowed. “I, Goddess Alafia’s humble servant, offer my greetings to the Lord of this City, the Duke of Rizar, Lucius Rizar. I am Mikhail Shuhart, the High Priest of this Holy Temple.”

…And he’s polite!

She was even more surprised to find such a young High Priest. He looked to be in his early 20s.

Aurora placed her right hand over her chest and her left held her dress as she gracefully bowed while introducing herself. "It's an honor to make your acquaintance. My name is Aurora."

"Yes, it's nice to meet you." The High Priest observed the woman in front of him. He couldn't see her face clearly due to the veil, but through her mannerisms, he could tell she was a Lady of high status. The reason she didn't give her full name wasn't because she was showing him discourtesy, but that she wasn't in a position where she can reveal her identity. Rather, her not giving him a fake name in itself was her giving him face.

Lucius nodded his head. “I apologize for inconveniencing you during this important day.”

“No, it’s my honor guide you in place of our most respected High Priest Abel’s place.” Mikhail raised his head and smiled. “But…it would have been nice if you visited the Temple occasionally. As of your lack of presence, many citizens believe that the Duke of Rizar shows little to no regard for the Holy Temple.” The High Priest said as he continued to smile with his eyes closed.

This…was he scolding the Duke of Rizar while giving off a sparkling, warm, gentle light??

“Unfortunately, as the Lord of this City, I am quite busy.” Lucius replied indifferently.

The two stared at each other, with either backing off.

W-what was with the sparks flying between these two? Aurora wondered if she missed something.

Humph.

Mikhail snorted. As though nothing ever happened, he turned to Aurora with a smile on his face. "Then, shall we go in?" He pointed to another door inside the room.

That smile of his...looked nothing but suspicious coming from him. Aurora quietly followed, but she kept at least 8 feet away from the Priest.

The room they entered was strangely set up in a way that Aurora had never seen. The large room held eight pillars that formed a circle. And in the middle of the circle was a silver chalice with eight different colored jewels, standing on a table connected to a complicated magic array constructed on the floor.

“Per your request, we will now test the Young Lady’s affinity.”

Aurora glanced at the Duke. What was going on? Why did he request such a thing? If she was able to prove her identity, he'd surely cut her apart with those swords of his. So, why bother?

After a person awakens their mana core, their affinity for the eight elements is tested. Water, earth, fire, wind, ice, lightning, light, and darkness. Their mana attribute is the element they have the highest affinity for. This doesn’t mean they can’t use other elements, but just that they are most suited for that element.

If one has an affinity with any of the other elements, then they can study spells pertaining to it.
