"Why?" Aurora asked him quietly.
Lucius knew what she was thinking, but he pretended not to know and evaded her question.
“Although you've been getting by until now, it’ll be inconvenient for you if you don’t have a rune. You might have noticed, but many essential tools are activated through runes. Showers, carriages, cooking, turning lights on or off..."
Carriages? Now that she thinks about it, earlier she saw carriages moving without horses. Was it moving by using rune magic?
Amazing. Back then although magic was advanced, magical tools were rather simple and crude. After all, why make something so troublesome when you can just use magic to teleport or move at the speed of light?
"Rune Magic, how is it different from Spirit Magic?" She asked Lucius. Aurora already realized that Rune Magic uses runes and mana, while Spirit Magic uses spirits and mana. But in the end, both still needs mana. Then, how exactly were the humans able to cheat the curse?
Lucius knew what she was asking, so he gave her a brief explanation. "Runes are inscribed using an ink created with special materials. It allows humans to access their mana core with certain limitations."
Aurora thought about the connection between the three and how it allows humans to use magic.
"Then the incantation is the rune, while the ink is the main ingredient and the mana is the median. The ink stimulates the rune into tapping into the mana core, which in turn activates the rune itself. But seeing as how there are certain limitations, Rune Magic is weaker than Spirit Magic, which directly uses spirits to form magic."
When she returns to the mansion, she should look into it more.
Lucius raised his eyebrows.
She was able to piece together the process of Rune Magic with the little information he shared with her. If she was able to learn more about Rune Magic, maybe she'd be on par with one of the instructors at the Magic Research Institute. “For you to receive a rune you need to first test your affinity.”
High Priest Mikhail silently listened to their conversation. This further piqued his interest in the Young Lady’s identity. She didn't know about Rune Magic and was a Runeless. Exactly, who is this girl? “Do you not have a rune yet, Young Lady?”
When Aurora was about to answer, Lucius glared at the Priest. “That isn’t something for you to ask,” Lucius said with hostility.
Aurora didn’t know, but people who didn’t have runes were extremely disdained. In some countries, those without runes weren’t treated as humans. They were treated even worse than animals.
The High Priest glared at the Duke. “I apologize if I have offended the Young Lady.”
Mikhail really didn’t like this brat. He treated the next Cardinal as his errand boy and didn’t have any respect. Before yesterday he didn’t have an opinion at all about the Lord of this City who barely showed his face at the Temple. But after overhearing his conversation with Abel, his indifference for the Duke turned into contempt.
"Ah, no. Please don't worry about it." She wasn't even from this time, so, she didn't think anything of it.
He was tempted to ask the girl again but thought back to what High Priest Abel said from before and refrained from doing do.
Priest Mikhail rubbed his chin with his fingers and watched as she processed this new information. When she seemed to have come to terms with it, he motioned for her to step in front of the chalice. “Use the dagger to cut your hand and pour blood in the chalice. When enough blood has been poured inside, it will flow down through the lines of the array and activate it."
Aurora followed his direction and stepped before the table. She glanced at the spot next to the cup. Indeed. There was a silver dagger there. Don’t tell her she’d have to spill half her blood to turn this complex array on? She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
In the past all one had to do was place their hand on a crystal ball and swoosh, it was done. Not only did the magic ball helped awaken your mana core, but you'll also know what elements suited you best. It was an all-purpose, all convenient magic ball!

...Things were so complicated now because of the curse.
“Right, before you start. Just in case you don’t know, affinity is graded as low, average, exceptional, and superior.” Mikhail pointed out. “5-15% is low affinity. 16-60% is average affinity. 61-80% is exceptional and above 80% is superior.”
Even the ranks for the affinity is different! It used to only be low, medium, and high…Aurora could only sigh.
“Is something wrong?” The High Priest asked Aurora as she sighed. He thought she was probably scared about cutting herself. Since most people who come to test their mana were children, Priests carefully cut their hands and instantly use a healing rune.
Really, what was he expecting? He wanted to test the little girl who caught the future Cardinal’s interest and was living with the “Monster of the North”. But as he thought, she wasn't anything special.
“No.” Aurora picked the dagger up and unexpectedly cut her hand without hesitation. The cut she made was so deep that the blood flowed out without stop. While Aurora's eyes twitched from the pain, she didn't make a single sound. A cut like this was nothing compared to the dangerous, life-threatening injuries she received from trying to escape her enemies.
Lucius coldly watched her, while Mikhail was panicking. He rushed to Aurora and immediately used the healing rune. “How can a lady be so careless? Treat yourself more preciously next time.” He said as he used a cloth to wipe her blood off. In a matter of a few seconds, the cut closed up neatly.
Preciously? She didn’t understand the concept of that. As long as one survived, was it important?
"Oh, it doesn't hurt anymore." She mumbled. Aurora moved her hand back and forth. The injury didn't heal completely, but it stopped bleeding.
The chalice absorbed Aurora’s blood and seeped down to the array. Her blood traced over every part of the array formation. The eight pillars each represented an element. Although the pillars didn’t look important at first, if one looked closely, they’d see five symbols inscribed on each.
Three of the pillars started shaking and burst forth with light, as though it was the sun. The eye-piercing light forced them to cover their eyes with their hands. The High Priest wondered why it was trembling and glowing so much.
Was something amazing about to show up??
When the light disappeared, the three people in the room uncovered their eyes. High Priest Mikhail looked at the symbols that were glowing on the pillars and gasped. “Oh. My. Sweet. Goddess!! What the....?!! ****!! How is this possible?!”
"****!"
"***!"
"********!"
The High Priest of the North Temple continuously spewed out vulgarities without a care.
“……” Lucius.
“……” Aurora.
Was it okay for a Priest to swear?!
