A young man walked through a lavishly decorated hallway.

The guards, the visitors, and the maids were bowing to him as he passed.

The man’s blue eyes and blonde hair was the unmistakable trait of his family, an undeniable evidence that he is the future master of the kingdom’s military and the center of its political power.

Valerian finally arrived to the end of the hallway, where a number of knights were waiting.

“Hello.” He reached out for a handshake, and the knights hurriedly bowed and shook his hand.

We greet Your Highness!” The knights were wearing white armor which belonged to the first order, the knights in charge of the capital’s law enforcement.

Let me guess…” Valerian pointed at the doors.

The knights reluctantly nodded.

The prince stood aside, and waited. A minute later the doors opened, and another man stepped out.

The man turned his head towards Valerian, leaving him no choice but to respond.

A pleasure seeing you…” Valerian mumbled through his teeth.

“A pleasure is mine. Have Your Highness finished fooling around for today?” The man in front of him was wearing the same white armor made of orichalcum.

I never fooled around, Duke…” Once again he had to endure the ridicule, luckily it wouldn’t last long this time.

The king’s aide peeked out.

“Your Highness, His Majesty is waiting.” The aide glanced at Valerian, imploring him to hurry up.

“I understand. I hope we will see each other later, Duke.” Valerian smiled, it was a sincere smile, since he can now escape the duke’s company.

He entered the king’s study and prepared to report.

“Subjugation of monsters to the North-West of the capital was completed. No casualties, and lots of materials.”

The king, man in his 40s, nodded, and returned to the documents.

What were you discussing?

“Recently there were news of something going on in the catacombs.” The king was buried under the documents, so he barely had time to look at his son. Valerian knew very well that unless his older brother takes on, there will be no end to the piles of documents.

Did they dig into another aquifer?

“I heard something about a gang war that resulted in a slaughter.” Hearing that there is something going on, Valerian smiled unwittingly.

Let them kill each other. The hotter it gets down there, the calmer it will be up here.”

“Marcus suggests we take action while they are weakened.” Immediately, his smile became wry.

“If he wants to go down there, let him. But without the knights.

“Do not be silly, if we can uproot that taint, then I am more than willing to send in the entire knight corps!” Valerian sighed, but was immediately surprised by the king’s following words.

You know what…? Your bunch can be useful at it too. How about you go down there and scout what is going on at the first level? After we encroach there, we will have some way to keep that scum at bay.” He started thinking about this, only to reach one conclusion.

You don’t really think we can do anything useful, ha?

W-why would I think so?” The king was flustered.

Whatever you say… I’ll go tell the others. We have a few unfinished tasks, and afterwards we will discuss in detail what and where we are to do.” The king nodded, and Valerian left the study.

When he exited the palace, he was immediately surrounded.

How did it go? Did he acknowledge us?” A female in a brown cloak immediately jumped to his face.

“Jeanne, I don’t think it went that well.” She was immediately pulled away by a young guy with bow and quiver on his back.

“Come on, prince, don’t keep us waiting!” Said another guy, he was wearing chainmail and some pieces of plate armor.

“Sorry, guys, there was no opportunity to put in a word about our adventures. But I guess dad found a possible task for us. We are to explore the first level of the catacombs.” Everyone’s growing agitation was immediately replaced with shivers when they heard about the catacombs.

“No wonder the first order is running around… They prepare for a fight.” An old man stroked his beard, and pondered.

“Let’s go do something more usual for us. The tunnels will not run away while we are at it.” Valerian stopped the party from thinking too much about it, and walked towards the palace gates.
