Chapter 4
He woke up to some loud noises coming from downstairs. He quickly jumped out of his bed and ran down the stairs. Surprised to see who it was. Ingka was cleaning a few things in the living room. She then looked up at him and smiled.
"It's you! What are you doing here in my former teacher's house?" She asked startled.
"I leave here." He replied.
"Oh! I see now. You were the one Maisie mentioned. Your Eddisons son Vlad." She said. "I didn't know you were a teacher's kid." continuing.
"You called my dad's teacher. He didn't mention that he had an apprentice." Vlad said.
"Well, I guess he forgot," she replied.
She then continued to clean up. "Keeping this place clean has become a hobby of mine ever since he passed away."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah, he was always such a workaholic and I came by to help from time to time when he was alive," she added.
"Thanks for taking care of the old man," He said.
"You're welcome. He was my teacher, and was the only family I had,"
"So you too were close," Vlad added.
Then she looked at him, smiled, and said, "So, tell me about yourself."
"Well, I'm a wanderer."
"Where did you come from?"
"I was doing a job up north. Clearing old ruins and gathering old preapocalyptic tech for me to sell or keep. Just making a living before I got the news about the old man. Then I came here."
"Oh, ok."
"So, how much is the tune-up going to cost me?" he asked.
"2000. Credits" She replied.
"Ok, I'll pay you tomorrow. How's the ammo I asked for?" he asked.
"I'll have it by morning." She replied.
"Sounds good," he replied.
He then went back upstairs to get ready for the day.
Soon after, Vlad then left her house and headed to the bar to grab a bit to eat before continuing with the day.
While he was at the bar, the waitress, Maisie, approached him.
"Hey, how's it going?" She asked.
"Going great thanks, Anything good to eat?" he asked.

Once Maisie brought him the food she sat down next to him. Also eating with him.
"So what's the plan now?" She asked while munching on some bread.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"I mean, you've been here for two days and haven't really done anything. I mean, I'm sure you have some plans for your time here right?"
"I haven't really thought about it. Since I just came here because of the letter the old man sent to me," he mentioned.
"Well, you could start by helping out around here. We need help with the bar and some other stuff. If you don't mind." She said.
"Sure, I'll help out. Plus can I leave the management of the bar to you, Maisie? You can have half of the profits. I think Eddison would have liked that idea." Vlad said with a confident tone.
"Thank you so much, I'll make sure to do everything properly." She said with a smile.
"Alright then, I'll head back to the house and rest a bit."
"Take your time, we're not closing anytime soon."
Vlad spent the day helping out at the bar and seeing how things ran. Seeing how Maisie worked and took care of everything assured him of the choice he made to leave the bar to her. He had other things he needed to do like figuring out God's Gate and how it worked.

Later that night while he was asleep, he had a dream. He was standing in front of a strange building. The door was open, but there was no sign of anyone inside. He walked through the doorway and into the building. Inside it was a huge white room with several machines. He decided to explore the place and began walking down the hallway. As he was walking he heard a noise coming from the end of the hallway. He turned to see a creature that was three times bigger than him. Its skin was black and it had big horns.
The creature then reached out and grabbed the wanderer's arm. As it did, its skin started burning. Vlad then tried to break free but it just tightened its grip on his arm. It then threw him against the wall and continued to burn his skin.
Vlad woke up screaming in pain. He had a nightmare and a very real feeling one at that.
Unable to sleep, he went downstairs to check on a cube-like item that was God's Gate.
There it was on the table beside the computer looking so ordinary. Like any other paperweight that anybody would use let alone his father Eddison. Vlad picked it up and held it in his hand. It felt cold and hard.
"What am I supposed to do?" he asked himself.
He started to feel around the item. Checking every corner of it and feeling around it. He studied it for a good few seconds.
He then started pressing the cube to see if it had a switch or something. After a few tries, he managed to press the button on the side. There was a click and suddenly something happened.
A triangular spike came out of the cube empaling his hand. Vlad shouted in pain. It felt like a hot branding iron stabbed his hand. The spike went through his hand and out the other side. It started to suck the blood from the wound like it was feeding on it.
As the cube started to have red mechanical lines along its shell until it fully engulfed the cube and gave it a red glow. Vlad tried to let go of the God's Gate cube but no matter how he tried he couldn't let go of the item. He could feel the blood from his body draining to the cube which pulsated a red glow after consuming some of his blood.
The pulsation from the cube started to become rhythmical as if following trying to follow a beat. After a few seconds, it pulsated to a regular tone that sounded so familiar to Vlad. It not only sounded familiar it felt familiar. Like it was something he knew all his life. Then he realized what the beat sounded to his horror was the same pattern as his heartbeat and pulse. Before he could understand what was happening. Even more pain came from his hand that was holding the cube. This time it was not a sucking motion that he felt but as if the cube was moving and wriggling. Then a feeling he never felt before happened. A weird current came from the wound and strange lines were coming from the wound. Like black mechanical veins crawling up his arm. At this point, Vlad was already exhausted from the pain and his vision started to blur. After taking one last look at the source of all his pain that night his vision began to darken. Before his consciousness faded away he noticed that the cube was getting smaller as if it was being absorbed by his body. Then his eyes fully closed and the last of his conscious mind blacked out.
