VOLUME I: The Gray Area Arc
PROLOGUE I
YEAR 2040
The City of Devigne is a thriving metropolis, often dubbed 'the most progressive' and the
'self-sustaining utopia in all of France' The chances of finding a job and getting a good
education for less than the average cost of education in the country is considerably easier
in this city. It is a haven for anyone looking to better their lives by simply working hard
enough.
From elite executives to street sweepers, everyone has pride for their job, because they
know that they are filling a void that will always be in demand. The wages in the city are
considerably higher than those of the other cities in the country coupled with an affordable
standard of living -the bustling city is closer to being a utopia than anywhere else.
The citizens of Devigne pride themselves in their immense work ethic and high academic
achievements and innovations, but unfortunately for this thriving city, like any concept in
the material world -it is not perfect.
The perfectionist ideology that is deeply ingrained within the minds of the citizens has led
to most people to buckle under the pressures that come with being a resident of an
almost-perfect city. This leads those who are deemed to be imperfect students and
unproductive members of the 'perfect' city to essentially remove themselves from the
presence of their successful fellow citizens.
The suicides have prompted the Mayor of the city to implement a sub-division within the
confines of the Devigne police force known as the Special Suicide Unit. A high-paying, yet
undesirable job that investigates the causes of various suicides with the hopes of possibly
providing closure for the families of the deceased. They see themselves as glorified
pathologists who are paid to witness the most traumatic crime scenes.
Only individuals with certain personalities get to take on the job after a strict evaluation and
screening process.
PROLOGUE II
The scratching sound of a nail file can be heard throughout the office, the one ferociously
grazing the file is oblivious to the sound that is generated by her personal grooming item.
the sound of multiple keyboards typing and the sound of the old A/C screeching and the
giant cat shaped Clock at the center of the office wall is wagging its tail while the eyes
look in different directions with every passing minute are the only sounds that can be
heard.
The woman using it sits at the reception desk with both her feet resting on the desk. The
sound, though irritating is relatively common in the office and usually implies that all is at
peace, because a call that requires their services only implies that something abhorrent
has occurred and no one is really keen on receiving a call for their services -call it noble or
pure laziness, but the employees much rather have a slow business day.
The name of the receptionist is Taylor Thomas or Tee-Tee (which has a more explicit
connotation) as they call her, mainly due to her abnormally large breasts that she'd much
rather leave partially exposed to toy with the emotions of her male colleagues as opposed
to covering them up. Her extremely oblivious and nonchalant persona has made her one
of the most beloved people at the workplace, drawn in by her calm and non-judgemental
outlook on life. Her crisp white shirt that has the the first three buttons unbuttoned to
display her cleavage and the black blazer that wears over her shirt and the upright blazer
collar coupled with a complementary skirt with no stockings underneath is a visual
representation of her somewhat rebellious nature.
Taylor casually files her nails with more precision than she has ever given any of her duties
as an employee, only to be distracted by the ringing of the company phone. A deafening
silence envelopes the entire office room and suddenly the eyes of the thirteen present
employees sitting in their respective see-through cubicles pierce into Tee-Tee's casual
soul.
Hello..? This is the Special Suicide Unit, I am Taylor, how can I help? Taylor asks with a
relatively shaky tone in her usually seductive voice.
The entire office room stares at the receptionist as she talks to the caller while all
individually creating scenarios in their minds.
A very audible and emotional response comes from Tee-Tee's mouth.
Oh I see, we are on our way, sorry for your loss, bye for now.
The silent hopes of the team are crushed when the realization that the call was indeed
about the part of their job that they loathe the most, the unpleasant job of seeing gruesome
and traumatic crime scenes where a suicide has taken place.
Tee-Tee sighs and looks back at her colleagues and in one of her rare stern moments
informs the team about the newest suicide.
Guys! There was a suicide on Dell street, but this one was different
-Different how? One of the employees furthest from Taylor asks.
Seems like this person wanted to die by being eliminated execution style, so in essence,
the deceased hired someone to shoot him. Now it is our job to investigate the crime
scene, which I have been informed is relatively brutal. Additionally there...
Before Taylor has time to end her sentence a person casually steps into the office
That is quite enough Taylor, you are scaring these kids! The person states.
The person is none other than the SSU Captain, Marcel Gray. The Eighteen-year-old
Captain of the subdivision is younger than all of his subordinates who are in their midtwenties including Taylor who is twenty-seven.
Oh Captain it is you, I see you are back from your coffee break! Taylor replies with a touch
of fear in her voice as she stares directly into her boss' dark hazel eyes. Captain Gray is a
very imposing and intimidating leader who is completely devoid of normal feelings coupled
with a witty and condescending personality, his ominous personality is pungent and
palpable. An element of existential dread fills the office. The young, innocent-looking
young man with grey hair and tan skin would pass off as an innocent high school boy if not
for his personality that sends chills down an entire suicide division's spines. The Captain
wears his signature trench coat over his crisp white shirt with a red neck-tie, the coat is
long enough to completely cover his entire outfit if he had chose to button it.
As you guys have heard, we have an emergency so I will personally go there myself, the
young captain takes over the duty of addressing the team.
You Captain? Taylor asks passionately because their captain rarely involves himself in
situations like this unless it is a very serious large scale emergency.
-Yes he coldly responds.
Taylor and I will personally go to the scene.. oh and bring that thing along as well.
Taylor understood what 'thing' that her superior was referring to.
Taylor immediately dashes to the office store room and disappears inside the dark room,
for a moment that felt like forever.
And after a while of fidgeting inside the store room, Tee-Tee drags a large and tall wooden
box with wheels and approaches the condescending captain, they share a brief exchange
of eye contact before casually heading out the door
CHAPTER ONE
What Happens When You Mix White and Black?
A black unmarked car stops in front of an abandoned building, which appears to have
been a soya bean factory that shut down years ago. Two people, a male and a female step
out of the car holding a large box with wheels, the female slams the door of the car and
proceeds to push to box in the direction of the entrance of the building, while the male
casually walks along without offering any help to the female.
The sound of their footsteps crunching on the broken pieces of glass on the way to the
entrance and the sound of the wheels of the heavy wooden box crushing the small pieces
of glass breathe life into the warehouse that was once abandoned and was recently a
place where an individual has ended their life. The male officer proceeds to force open the
iron doors. Daylight pierces into the dark warehouse and the yellow police tapes of the
officers who were first responders to the scene have encircled the scene of the crime.
The two officers walk in and are greeted with an unpleasant sight of an individual who is
crouched down on the floor with a bullet hole behind his head.
The two officers head to the body for a close inspection and notice the suicide note in the
victim's hand that explains the events that transpired.
The letter reads:
“To my parents back at home, Mom, Dad and of course you Aunty
By the time you read this letter, I will be long dead, I am sorry for the
grief that I am going to put you through, I know you guys have saved
up your hard-earned money from your soya bean business back at the village
in order to pay for my college fees, but unfortunately
I have failed all my courses and I have also failed to start a soya
bean business here in Devigne, I have let you down and I think
it would be better if I didn't remain a burden to you all. I hope
to see you in the next life. I hired a well-known hitman
with the rest of the money you gave me to have him
shoot me so that I could at least feel some pain for being
such an abject failure.
Don't hold it against me. I love you all.
Goodbye!
Klaus”
The two officers take the suicide note, which was surprisingly untainted with blood and
place it inside a file to analyse back at the office. The blood around the victim's body has
dried up and started to flake up.
Captain...the female officer speaks
-Yes I know, the male officer replies

Their brief exchange was in regard to the realization that the supposed suicide must have
taken place about a week or two ago. The body was slowly decomposing because of the
cold temperatures inside the warehouse. This was beneficial to the officers, because the
body could be analyzed at their facility.
Open the box, Taylor, the male officer callously orders the female.
-Very well..If you say so, Captain.
The female officer opens the box, which contains mystic pagan tools inside. The tools are
used to metaphysically cleanse the areas where suicides have taken place to clear any
negative forces. This ritual was initiated by the Captain himself, which always baffled the
skeptical unit that he led, but since no one could oppose their superior, they integrated it
into their work protocol.
Captain Gray grabs a feather and a lighter from within the box and burns the feather, as
the orange flame rapidly eats away at the feather, he utters the words You are free!
The feather disintegrates away and a somber, yet hopeful aura covers the room.
The two officers share a passionate stare and smile in satisfaction that they had helped a
sad soul pass on to the next world peacefully.
Despite being overly imposing at times, the captain is really compassionate and good at
what he does, Taylor reflects in her mind.
Oh well, Taylor, Our job is far from over! Captain Gray states.
-Right! Taylor replies passionately.
Taylor has the administrative duty to trace and contact the relatives of the deceased by
using state-of-the-art portable DNA-profiling technology.
She sticks her hand inside the box and takes out a metallic briefcase, she winds up the the
briefcase number lock to open up the briefcase and inside lies a micro-monitor with a
keyboard and a DNA-PROFILING chip lies where the touch pad should normally be.
Gray takes some tape and heads to the body, he attaches the tape onto the flaky blood
and removes it again, leaving the blood attached to the tape.
Gray proceeds to give Taylor the sample.
Thank You Captain, now let's see.. Taylor attaches the sample to the chip and the monitor
scours the entire French database while the blue light from the monitor shines on her face.
[ping ] the monitor finds a match and a name pops up on the screen and the two officers
look at the name and database image of the deceased.
It seems that his name was Frank Baron, a son to a humble group of soya bean producers
from the outskirts of town. Taylor casually reads the data sheet.
-Poor things, they will be so devastated to hear about this, Gray replies.
Wait a second..Captain! Taylor exclaims as she has discovered something unnerving.
-What is it?
Something doesn't make sense, the deceased person clearly referred to himself as Klaus
in the suicide note, so why does the database only identify him as being Frank Baron?
Taylor asks.
-Hmm that is odd, could it have been a nickname that his family gave him perhaps?
Could be, but we need to properly search this perimeter, Captain. This boy has no
cellphone with him, no documentation and the database does not identify him as having
any residential address. Taylor is puzzled by the inconsistencies.
Captain...
-What is it, Taylor?
Could the suicide note been forged by the assailant and maybe this killer could've
forgotten the deceased's name?
-It is a possibility, but it seems too far fetched to assume that because all the other facts in
the note were frighteningly accurate. Any person who would take so much time to
research their victim would undoubtedly remember their victim's name.
Ahh yes, you are right Captain! Taylor concedes.
Taylor shuts off the monitor and closes the briefcase and carefully places it inside the box
and locks the box.
We will let the police force deal with the crime scene in general to verify whether this was
truly a suicide or a murder, but we are taking the body with us to further investigate.
Gray instructs.
-Gotcha, Captain.
The two officers prepare to leave the venue as they leave the body in place for the other
stationed members of the SSU who arrived before them to retrieve the body and send it to
their Headquarters. Gray takes a final look at the building.
..Captain, are you coming? Taylor asks.
-Oh, yes.. I am, let us go Taylor!
The relatively shaky response that her Captain gives her makes her uneasy for a split
second, but she brushes it off.
Back at the Office , Two Days After The Retrieval of the Body
The office is functioning as normal, it is a standard day, Captain Gray is sitting at his corner
cubicle typing some documents while Taylor is doing her normal routine of filing her nails,
even with her Captain in the office with her. The atmosphere is normal, the sound of
multiple keyboards typing and the sound of the old A/C screeching and the giant cat
shaped Clock at the centre of the office wall is wagging its tail while the eyes looks in
different directions with every passing minute are the only sounds that can be heard.
UNTIL THE PHONE RINGS, The entire office room stares at the receptionist as she talks
to the caller while all individually creating scenarios in their minds, the captain is hardly
phased by the ring.
Taylor answers the call
Hi, This is the Special Suicide unit, how can we be of service?
The facial expression of the often nonchalant Taylor changes in reaction to the news she is
receiving.
Oh, I see, we'll be on our way. Goodbye for now!
Taylor takes a deep breath and musters up a firm Captain!
The Captain made eye-contact with the receptionist for an instant
I see, so the results are out. He responds.
-Yes sir, Taylor replies sternly
Very well, let's get going – we must head to the family and deliver the unpleasant news.
The captain affirms while standing up from his desk and wearing his signature coat.
Gray instructs the staff to proceed as usual, while him and Taylor head out for a few hours.
A few minutes later, Taylor and Gray are in a car headed to see the family of the deceased
to hopefully gain clarity on the name issue that still alludes them.
Taylor drives the car and Gray sits at the back of the car, lost in thought which Taylor
notices by looking at him through the front mirror.
25 Minutes later, they are out of town and arrive at the location of the family to
deliver the unpleasant news
The family had already been called and notified of the police visit, the residence is a small
blue-painted wooden farmhouse with a classic rocking-chair at the front. The porch was
filled with the family of the deceased, mainly the mother, father and the aunt. The two
officers exit the car and head towards the porch where they are warmly welcomed by the
concerned family. Tears fill up Taylor's eyes and distort her vision, this is Taylor least
favourite part of her job. The tears never leave Taylor's eyes
They are welcomed inside and they are served tea by one of the family members that they
presume is the aunt of the deceased.
The rest of the conversation is a complete blur to Taylor as Gray callously delivers the
news to the family. An audible gasp and screams follow thereafter. She only sees the
moving lips of her captain and him pointing at the suicide note and the family's distraught
reactions. The often nonchalant Taylor exposes her vulnerable nature.
The whole ordeal feels like a dream, she doesn't say a word during the entire meeting,
however, she hears something puzzling from the patriarch.
-Oh I see, so he referred to himself as Klaus
The matriarch interjects, There is nothing malicious about the note, Klaus was...
Before the matriarch could finish her sentence, the aunt shouts out a relatively loud No!
Which stops the distraught mother in her tracks. This surprises even the captain.
The aunt proceeds to offer the two officers a partial explanation.
You see, officers, Klaus was a very special friend of Frank's you see...we understand why
he ended his life, as hard as it may be to accept.
-Now if you don't mind officers..
The tone that the aunt uses was a hint that they should leave.
Gray responds with an “I see”
Let's go Taylor!
-Yes sir
The two officers stand up and prepare to depart, but before they leave they inform the
family of their relative's body and where they can go and collect it.
Gray extends his condolences once more and both officers leave for their car, leaving the
heartbroken family to grieve for their deceased family member.
The two officers share few words in the car as they drive back to the office.
Gray imparts a few words to Taylor.
Klaus was the real reason for the suicide.
The ambiguous statement rattles Taylor.
