Helios interjected himself between Nightmare Dimmane and Tuktuk on Krutak’s shoulder. He felt dwarfed next to the both of them. Steeling himself to meet Dimmane’s gorgeous eyes. She bit back her reply to silently regard him, allowing him the opportunity to speak.

“That Luminare on the table, we heard his name not long ago on the way here. How do you have him already?” Helios asked, gesturing to the restrained demon.

“I may have judged you too quickly before, Helios. You possess much more tact than Tuktuk. My eyes in the city know that I’m always searching for volunteers. They located him for me as soon as his rule-breaking was reported. I suspect information is why you’re here. Tuktuk wishes me to locate something for him, what is it?” Nightmare Dimmane replied with a slight smirk, teasing Tuktuk’s beard with a playful scratch.

“Tuktuk knew he couldn’t hide his intentions from you, Dimmane. We need a quiet location to establish a Nightmare lounge. We don’t want to be disturbed during Helios’ training,” Tuktuk answered.

“I have the perfect place in mind. But it’s going to cost you, I also won’t accept King Beebo’s Ethos. I don’t wish for her to be reminded of my existence to make things difficult for me. It’s not easy to be associated with you, Tuktuk. You were once a great man, now…”

“You were a great lover, Dimmane. Also, with your talent for shaping Mortal’s dreams. You had the potential to be the greatest Nightmare artificer Tuktuk has ever met. If only you would accept formal training, Tuktuk would never have accepted Arthrim’s challenge. Sigh,” Tuktuk reminisced with a heavy sigh.

“In your pride, you would never have accepted anyone as better than you. Not even me. You would’ve still taken Arthrim’s challenge. It’s just who and what you are, Immutable,” Dimmane pointed out, Tuktuk shuddered upon hearing the true meaning of his name.

“It’s not who Tuktuk is anymore. But, you’re right. Helios, this is a safe place for us to wait for you to complete your Task,” Tuktuk said, gesturing at the furled scroll in his hand.

“I’ll do you a deal, a gamble on my part. Whatever grade Ethos you receive from the Task, I’ll accept in exchange for a residence that I own. It’ll be off the books so that King Beebo will have to look to find you,” Dimmane proposed.

“Dimmane, you don’t have to do that…” Tuktuk began.

“Hush, this is between me and Helios. It has nothing to do with you. What say you?” Dimmane interrupted, waving away his protest.

“I accept your generosity,” Helios agreed.

“Good. Now, read your Task and sign your Sigil upon it,” Dimmane replied.

Helios placed down his bundle and firmly planted his staff on the floor with one of his top arms. Simultaneously, using his bottom pair of hands to unfurl the named Task scroll. Flowing script seared across the parchment as he read, transmitting the familiar voice of the summoner into his mind. He furrowed his brows in confusion.

I wish to summon my… friend, Helios. I believe he didn’t survive the demon incursion that happened in our city two years ago. I can’t stop thinking about him. Now that everyone knows Hell’s real, I can only try my luck. I offer this sacrifice in exchange for information or to speak to him directly.

“Why her?...” Helios whispered to himself. Placing his free palm onto the taut scroll.

His Sigil scorched into the paper under his hand but didn’t stop there. Fire fanned out to consume the parchment and then started to climb his arm. He pulled his hand away with apprehension. Tsiyaha and Krutak watched with a morbid fascination as Helios’ flesh was burned away, replaced with the layered fabric-like wisps of the Echo form.

The fire spread through his entire body. Shreds of shadow detached and drifted away from his body. The moment it ravaged his vision, he discovered himself hovering in a different location, one on Earth. He recognised it as a modern-day kitchen.

A breakfast bar connected the kitchen to an open-plan living room. Helios appeared like an ethereal spirit shrouded in shadow, his body devouring the illumination from the flickering electronic light bulbs.

Helios looked around the room, a circle was drawn in blood on the laminate wooden floorboards. White light rose from the bloody discarded corpse of a wild duck, streaming toward him. He thoughtfully held out an intangible hand, the stream quickly taking the form of a Beast Ethos. He felt it enter his body and take up residence inside his Soul Brand.

“Helios, is that you?...” the familiar voice said nearby, interrupting his assessment of the situation.

Helios shifted his attention and attempted to move forward, bouncing off an invisible object. He glanced at the floor, a barrier prevented him from leaving the circle of blood. Standing on the other side was a beautiful woman wearing an oversized plush robe with a drawn-back hood. Her auburn hair was pinned up in a messy bun. She appeared feverish and reeked of alcohol.

“Margaret, I never expected it to be you to summon me.”

“What’s happened to the power? Margaret. Have you been drinking again? There’s a spilled bottle of wine and an antique ouija board on the table…” A woman called out from the living room. She came in from a door at the side of the room and bent down to pick up the mentioned items from the table. She looked up and abruptly dropped the objects in her hand and rushed into the kitchen. “Margaret, what have you done? Margaret, this is the most reckless thing you’ve ever done. I know you had a crush on him but this is just insane!”

“It’s really him, Luanne. It’s Helios. He said my name, he recognised me…” Margaret said, using her sleeve to wipe tears from her eyes.

“I don’t care who it is, only what it is. That’s a demon, Margaret. Get rid of it now!” Luanne exclaimed, slamming closed an old book on the counter and grabbing a cloth.

She turned the on the tap and hurriedly wet the tea towel with water. She knelt down and desperately started to scrub away the symbols written in blood on the floor. Helios felt the barrier restraining him disappear after she unintentionally wiped away a part of the circle. Luanne gasped with fear.
