Realising what she had done, Luanne slowly rose to her feet. She refused to even blink while maintaining eye contact with him. Helios’ ethereal figure remained fixed in place as he watched the pair of women.

“Don’t worry, Luanne. He won’t hurt us, it’s Helios,” Margaret said, stepping forward with a delirious smile.

“You’re not thinking straight, Margaret. That’s not Helios, it’s a fucking demon. Stay back!” Luanne exclaimed, dragging her backward. Margaret kicked and clawed to release her grip but the other woman was much stronger.

He pulled a knife from the block on the kitchen counter and threw it at Helios. It harmlessly passed through his body embed into the wall. A slight shimmer distorted the blade, visibly corroding it on the plaster wall behind him. It dropped to the floor with a clatter, causing Helios to glance in its direction before looking back up.

Luanne panicked, throwing the remaining knives while dragging back her hysterical ward. She quickly ran out of sharp objects to throw so picked up the block and threw that too. Her foot bumped against something squishy. Looking down, she shied away from the duck carcass on the floor.

“What the fuck, Margaret? You killed a duck. You need to go back to the psych hospital. I understand that you went through a very traumatic event. But this? It’s been allowed to go on for far too long,” Luanne said, kicking the duck across the kitchen.

Simultaneously, Margaret shoved her away and broke free of her grasp, causing her to slip on the blood on the floor. Luanne cried out and fell backward, smashing her head onto the edge of the counter. Her body collapsed limply in a heap on the ground, gazing blankly at the ceiling.

Margaret’s trembling hands clutched at her hair and slumped to the floor. She hysterically mouthed silent apologies to her roommate. Helios floated to her side. He attempted to place an intangible hand on Margaret’s shoulder but it passed through. He dropped it back at his side and considered consuming her soul directly.

The very real scent of their life force is overwhelming me with the desire to devour them both. My feelings for Margaret are still there. But, they’re isolated. They won’t prevent me from tasting her...

He circled in front of her, gesturing upward with a hand. Her gaze followed his motion to look up at him in her kneeling position with innocent eyes. He lowered himself to her level with his face in front of hers.

Wait, I might have a use for her yet. I’ll see if I can do it after.

He suppressed the allure of her pure soul flooding his senses. He turned to face the woman slumped at an unnatural angle against the counter. He crouched beside her. She choked on her breath as she struggled to escape from him.

Unfortunately, Luanne was paralyzed from the neck down. He braced his hands against the counter to either side of her head and leaned close. He started the ritual breathing pattern, coaxing a thin stream of lifeforce from her lips into his. Margaret watched frozen in place as he devoured her roommate’s soul. Her skin shrivelled to reveal her bones, quickly mummifying before collapsing into a pile of ash.

Her essence tastes exquisite. I can’t think of another word to describe the faintly bitter flavour. It’s unmatched by any demon soul, somehow… clean. Margaret's scent is even more intoxicating. I think I know why. If you had told me the reason in life, I’d have never believed it about a woman as attractive as her.

She’s a virgin, unbelievable. I can smell the difference between the pair. It’s similar to how I can determine the grade of an Ethos at a glance. Can demons do the same with living humans?

Helios hovered in front of Margaret, his actions seemed to have sobered her. She stared at him in terror while scrambling away.

“Don’t be afraid, Margaret. I won’t hurt you. It’s me, Helios,” Helios consoled her, her otherworldly voice echoing similar to his voice in life.

She closed her eyes and inhaled sharply at his words, considering for a moment before deciding to become still. Helios stopped beside her, looking down with imitated pity.

“Luanne was my big sister and I killed her. What have I done? I should never have summoned you!” Margaret briefly cried into her hands before glaring over them at Helios.

“It was her carelessness that killed her, Margaret. It wasn’t us. I helped her, it was mercy. There’s no more pain where she is now, a much better place,” Helios comforted with a lie.

“Really, she is? I knew you were actually an angel, Helios. You were always so kind to me,” Margaret said in denial, taking her hands away from her tear-stained face with an angelic smile.

Because I was trying to get into your pants. Don’t read too much into it, sweetheart.

Helios thought in his mind but didn’t say it aloud. Instead, he got as close to her as he could before intimately speaking to her.

“Can you help me, Margaret? I need you to do something here on Earth. A divine mission you might say…”

“Anything! What do you need me to do?” Margaret earnestly interrupted, leaping to her feet. She stared at him with a determined expression.

“I need you to share me with the world. I can help people but they need to know about me first. All you need to do is have them call me the same way you brought me here. Will you do it, Margaret? For me?” Helios coerced.

“Thank you, Margaret. You’re a saint and everyone will soon see it too. I’ll give you something to prove it,” Helios praised.

His Soul Brand writhed inside his consciousness, falling to leave his ethereal body. Being struck by sudden inspiration, he surged toward the dead duck on the ground. His body shrunk into an overflowing stream of shadow, plunging into its orifices. His ethereal figure disappeared inside the corpse. The duck’s leg suddenly twitched.
