Helios tested his motor control, urging the duck corpse to its feet. It stood up with unnatural jerking motions. Anyone capable of observing the metaphysical realm would see a putrid fog being emitted by the duck. Margaret wasn’t one such person, she stared in morbid fascination at what appeared to be just a reanimated wild duck. He lifted a wing to preen at his feathers.

This body feels strange. I don’t want to be inside it any longer than I have to be. Let’s get this over with.

“Helios, why are you in the duck?” Margaret asked in confusion.

“Quack!” Helios attempted to reply. He cleared his throat and tried again, focusing on the Soul Brand in his consciousness to translate. This time, the words were recognisable through the quacking. “I cannot directly affect the physical world, I need a medium. This just so happens to be conveniently at hand.

“What are you planning to do?”

I need to ensure something. Don’t be afraid,” Helios replied, stimulating his Soul Brand. The duck head lilted to the side, unable to support its weight because of the slashed ligaments.

Invisible tendrils stretched across the kitchen toward Margaret. She didn’t react to the imperceptible web, earnestly watching Helios. A golden light appeared on the side of her neck. She quickly turned to examine herself in a wall-mounted mirror, tentatively reaching up to touch the newly formed Sigil.

“What is this? It’s beautiful…” Margaret said in wonder, turning her head side to side to get a better look. In the reflection behind her, smoke seeped from the duck’s offices to reform into Helios’ Echo.

“It’s called a Sigil. Can I trust you to fulfil your promise, Margaret?” Helios asked, floating to her side. She bit her lip and earnestly nodded. The moment her head stopped moving, Helios felt a pulling inside him. He couldn’t prevent it from escaping, fire started to spread across the surface of his Echo. “Look at me, Margaret. I have to go now. You know what you must do.”

“Wait, don’t leave me again. You just got here!” Margaret shouted, spinning around and reaching out toward him.

“We’ve run out of time, my Task is complete. You’ll see me again in this lifetime or the next, you belong to me now. I will no one take what’s mine,” Helios replied, his body consumed by flame. After his figure faded from view, Margaret collapsed to her knees while burying her face in her hands. She sobbed on the lonely kitchen floor as the flickering lights returned to normal, wallowing in grief.

Helios reappeared in Hell where he had left, a small fiery vortex hovering in front of him. Before he could take stock of his surroundings a glowing orb was ejected from the swirling flames. A long hand reached out to intercept it. Helios looked up and saw Dimmane examining what appeared to be an Ethos.

“A Peon Ethos, to be expected. It seems you got yourself a bargain…” Dimmane started to speak. Before she could finish her sentence, a flood of Ethos started to spew forth from the vortex. She began to catch what she could while the others did the same. Helios watched with disdain the level of frenzy they had toward the orbs.

Look at them. Forsaking their dignity just for some imaginary currency. If one named Task is capable of this, why do they place so much value on it? Don’t tell me that no one is capable of handling business on their own.

“Helios, did you start a cult? These are all Mortals that devoted their souls to you in response to your Task. When they reach the end of their natural life spans, their souls are captured by the Task and converted into Ethos,” Tuktuk informed him from Krutak’s shoulder. He was the only one as unflustered as Helios in the room. Even the restrained Luminare on the table was watching in a wide-eyed stupor.

“Yes,” Helios answered simply. Dimmane’s gaze toward him suddenly changed, increasing his value inside her mind. The frequency of orbs being ejected started to slow down.

The others allowed the last of the orbs to drift over to Helios and he caught them, storing them inside his Soul Brand. Countless orbs had been ejected from the vortex at this point when the quality of Ethos suddenly changed. The second wave of Ethos shot into the room, not as numerous as the Peon Ethos.

“T-this is absolutely unheard of, Tyrant Ethos as well! How did you do it? A demonic cult is rarely if ever this successful,” Dimminae stammered.

“That’s because I didn’t start a demonic cult, I started an angelic one. I also left her with my Sigil as divine proof,” Helios indifferently replied while shrugging his shoulders. Catching a few Tryrant Ethos that made it past the others as they stared at him gobsmacked.

“You did what? Who would ever believe that you’re a fucking angel?” Tsiyaha increduosly asked.

“Are you telling me that you wouldn’t?” Helios teasingly replied.

The stream of Tyrant Ethos ended. There was far less than the first wave, maybe ten in total. Everyone expected that to be the end of it but Helios knew that it wasn’t. He had yet to see the one belonging to Margaret.

The quality of the Ethos improved again. A single Ethos floated from the churning vortex. Dimmane urgently snatched it from the air. She was staring at it flabbergasted.

“Well done, Helios. Truly worthy of being Tuktuk’s apprentice. A Virgin Ethos, leaving even the great Dimmane speechless. A truly impressive feat,” Tuktuk said with a laugh. It suddenly cut short as another six Virgin Ethos drifted from the swirling mass. “You got not one, but seven souls to dedicate their purity to you? Now, even Tuktuk is without words.”

Tuktuk shook his head in wonder, looking away from the vortex. Helios’ eyes were fixed on the tiny portal, ignoring all else. The moment the soul he was waiting for appeared, he was the first to pounce forward. He caught the solitary Ethos branded with his Sigil and held it tightly in a closed fist.
