Upon hearing Tuktuk’s explanation, Dimmane frowned in thought before suddenly turning. An unexpectedly sharp wing savagely sliced across the jugular of the Luminare chained to the table. His eyes widened in panic as blood gurgled from his lips and a Demonic Larvae emerged from between his teeth. Dimmane flicked the blood from her feathers and tucked her wings back behind her.

“Do not speak of this encounter to anyone. Nobody will find out,” Dimmane warned, staring at each of the Dolore in turn, including the doorman Scverm.

“You will both stay with Dimmane and assist her. It will take up to centuries for the cultist’s souls to be reborn. Tuktuk doesn’t want you distracting Helios while I teach. For both of our sakes, he must be victorious in this competition. Do you object to this, Nightmare Dimmane?” Tuktuk instructed.

“No, it makes a lot of sense and I can put them to use in raising their new Familia members. Let me show you to the birthing pools. Scverm, monitor the Larvae. They should be emerging as Newborn shortly,” Dimmane said, waving for them to follow her before pushing through transparent drapes.

Helios shared a look with his companions before nodding for them to go after her. They pulled aside the fabric to discover a large arched doorway. On the other side, rows of uniformly square pools filled with cool black Genesis Aqua. The liquid audibly bubbled up through metal grates preventing anything from getting in or out.

Curious, Helios walked to the closest one to investigate. The grate held a small circular opening in the centre. Crouching down for a closer look, something suddenly slammed against the grate with an aggressive hiss. Helios took a breath and released the web he had reflectively spun.

I almost reduced this caged Demonic Larvae to a bloody pulp for catching me off guard. That could have gotten messy. I imagine Nightmare Dimmane would charge me for it too, no less.

“As you can see, the containment pools must be kept at a low temperature. If it begins to glow like the waters outside, it may irreversibly harm the soul pupa before it forms into a Demonic Larvae. We don’t want that. So, Tisyaha and Krutak. Your job will be to manage these pools and assist me in raising them to the desired caste. For your Familia, this will take as long as Helios’ apprenticeship. For some of them, longer,” Dimmane said, gesturing to the pools and stacks of barrels along the walls. The Genesis Aqua which had been splashed from the containment pools glowed a faint orange colour.

“Ha, I don’t know what you believe me to be but I’m no nursemaid,” Tsiyaha scoffed, with her arms crossed. Her snake hair hissed in annoyance to highlight her displeasure.

“You are nothing, a Dolore. You’ve yet to even experience the true difficulties of evolving. I doubt you’ve even become aware of your inner path to reach Luminare. You probably assume that it’s the same as the ones before. No, it’s no longer so simple for you and that’s why I only guarantee Dolore stage demons. After that contains risks none of you are prepared for. If it was as simple as just devouring life force, I wouldn’t have failed to become an Archdemon. So, if you want to benefit from my guidance, you… will… do… as you’re fucking told!” Dimman reprimanded, leaning in close to stare into Tsiyaha’s eyes as she emphasized each word.

“If you are wise, you will listen to her. It’s not every day that the most prolific breeder in Fastidium is willing to take you under her wing,” Tuktuk mocked with a chuckle. He shut his mouth after eliciting a pointed glare from Dimmane for his choice of words.

Tsiyaha closed her eyes and crossed her arms as she attempted to reign in control of her raging emotions. She released a heavy sigh and unwound her arms, returning defiant eye contact to Dimmane in front of her.

“I.. thank… you… for… teaching… me,” Tsiyaha reluctantly said through gritted teeth.

“Now, that’s all out of the way. Tsiyaha, take Krutak and go back to the other room. Grab the empty barrels and stack them over there,” Dimmane instructed, pointing to the far corner of the room with barrels neatly leaning against the wall. Tuktuk took the cue and lowered himself from Krutak’s back.

How did helping Newborns at the Birthing Pools now become my full-time job? They were supposed to work for me, not the other way around. This is fucking bullshit,” Tsiyaha muttered to herself as she followed Dimmane’s instructions. Helios overheard her complaints and couldn’t help but chuckle quietly.

“Are we being escorted through the back entrance to our promised Nightmare lounge, Dimmane? This appears to be a dead end,” Tuktuk observed.

“You of all people should be aware of arrays. You were the first to apply them to Nightmare tools. No one else has ever been able to resolve the conflicts between the different element stones without them. That hammer of yours is the perfect example. I see Inferna and Unda stones working perfectly together, fire and water. How did you do it, if not with arrays?”

“That sounds like it might be one of the secrets Lord Arthrim was willing to throw me into the crossfire to find out,” Helios dully muttered.

“As my apprentice said, Tuktuk will teach him all of my secrets. He will just because those parasites, Arthrim and Beebo, don’t believe it possible Tuktuk will. When his apprentice is completely humbled, Helios will then take things further and challenge Arthrim in front of the entire crowd. He will have no choice but to accept. Imagine the face-slap when Arthrim’s defeated by Helios. Hahaha!”

“What do you mean ‘challenge Arthrim’? That wasn’t part of the arrangement,” Helios objected.

“Relax, you will do the impossible. The other kings will already know of the competition, no one will dare touch you lest they display weakness. Arthrim has no idea what you will become capable of. My apprentice will herald a new age for Nightmare throughout the seven kingdoms of Hell. Now show me this array,” Tuktuk boasted, smugly crossing his arms.

“Look up,” Dimmane replied, gesturing upward with her chin. They complied.
