Tsiyaha released the hand clamped over Helios’s mouth. He rubbed his chin while exercising his jaw. After giving him a pointed glance, she silently slipped passed him into the open toward the Primus demon. She paused to look back at the outcropping and signalled him forward. Understood the message, Helios quickly followed suit and slowly prowled forward.
I think that mucus coating the Primus demon’s tentacles is a paralytic. It only took moments to take effect on the Newborn. I need to be careful and stop procrastinating. It’s time to shine.
The Newborn kept the Primus demon distracted as it clutched it off the ground with its tentacles. A strand of life force was flowing into its mouth from its motionless victim. Helios became aware of something tugging at the back of his mind. It was an unfamiliar sensation, he could feel the Primus demon’s demonic aura as it grew in strength.
So, this is what a demonic aura feels like. It’s like a bad smell, hard to miss as I get closer. I can see why Tsiyaha evolved to suppress hers. The Primus demon isn’t even attempting to hide its aura. I guess it doesn’t need to here, it’s proven to be a top predator around the Birthing Pool.
Helios crept closer, testing his grip on the obsidian dagger in his hand, the Primus demon oblivious to his wary approach. He had lost sight of Tsiyaha when she blended seamlessly into the environment. The stream of essence coming from the demonic Newborn abruptly flickered out, causing the Primus demon to lick its lips in satisfaction.
It casually tossed the corpse to the side. It burst into fragments upon impact with the coarse sand. The Primus demon noticed Helios, straightening to its full height. It wickedly grinned at Helios. It was distracted by the process of mutation, directing the muscles underneath its skin toward the tentacles protruding from its back. They visibly grew in length.
Helios narrowed his eyes, sharpening his focus. He stopped moving forward and crouched low, raising his make-shift weapon in front of him. His hands remained steady.
“Haha, to think my next meal would deliver itself to me. This is a treat,” the Primus demon gleefully said.
Helios lightly scoffed, simply tightening his grip on the obsidian in his hand. He smirked feeling the reassuring sharpness against the palm of his hand. He cautiously watched the tentacles hypnotically swaying, patiently waiting for the Primus demon to make the first move.
“Aren’t you the brave one? Hold on, you’re not a Newborn. Strange, where are your mutations?” the Primus demon said, leaning forward to inspect him. It recoiled with an audible gasp of shock. “Gasp, I can see your Soul Brand. You’re a seedling magic user! I must be fortunate, your kind is exceptionally rare. Kekeke.”
The Primus demon cackled before suddenly lunging forward, tentacles whipping toward Helios. In its eagerness, the Primus demon misjudged the distance and struck too early. Helios dived to the side, fluidly rolling over his shoulder back to his feet. He didn’t hesitate, retreating toward the outcropping behind him with his weapon raised defensively.
After missing and seeing its prey attempting to escape, the Primus demon roared in annoyance. Helios spat on the sand before rushing toward a nearby stalagmite. The Primus demon flew passed him and slid to a stop. It was forced to alter its course and charge in pursuit.
Helios ran in a straight line until the last moment. He leapt to the side, causing the Primus demon to collide with a smaller stalagmite. It shattered under the impact, knocking the Primus demon to the ground, burying it under a shower of rubble. Angrily tossing aside rocks covering it, the Primus demon struggled to regain its feet. It searched the surrounding environment for signs.

“Over here, squid-head!” Helios shouted, throwing a rock at the side of its head to gain its attention.
The Primus demon spun to face him. Seeing him standing poised to throw another stone, it screeched in rage and recklessly charged toward him. Helios started shifting nervously, keeping a tight hold of the rock in one hand while clutching his dagger in the other.
Now’s the time for Tsiyaha to keep her word. The Primus demon’s pissed, its wounded pride has stripped it of self-preservation.
“Oi, dumbass. Get the fuck back!” Helios cursed, launching the stone at the recklessly charging Primus demon’s face. The Primus demon shielded its eyes with a forearm and knocked aside the projectile.
While distracted, Tsiyaha took the opportunity to pounce. She rose from the black surface of the beach, sand pouring from her body. Lunging at the Primus demon’s feet, she entangled its legs with both arms. Momentum tripped it flying forward to skid across the sharp sand, tearing open the outer layer of skin.
Helios didn’t hesitate. While the Primus demon attempted to disengage from Tsiyaha’s hold, Helios leapt forward. He plunged the jagged edge of his obsidian rock into the Primus demon’s exposed neck. It reactively clasped his wrists and flung them to the side, slashing its throat deeper in the process. A flailing tentacle came out of nowhere and smacked him rolling away.
“Argh!” the Primus demon cried out in agony and struggled free of Tsiyaha’s grasp to unsteadily regain its feet.
Tsiyaha fearlessly launched another attack. She ferociously leapt onto its back and sank her sharp teeth into its shoulder. The Primus demon jolted upright with a shriek of pain. Its tentacles wrapped her body tight before attempting to remove her from its back.
Helios charged forward, tackling the grappling pair to the ground. He immediately plunged his makeshift weapon through its torn flesh into its soft vitals. The tentacles were pinned underneath their combined weight, entangled on Tsiyaha. It feebly attempted to throw Helios off with both arms. He merely flattened his body weight while maintaining his position to drive the knife deeper.
Its struggles lessened as the Primus demon began to pant with exhaustion. Helios was able to pin its arms without resistance. Placing his face close, he stared directly into its eyes. Seeing the menacing grin slowly widen across his face, the Primus demon flinched while averting its gaze.
“To think my next meal would possess tentacles. I’ve never been a fan of seafood. For you, I’ll make an exception. Beggars can’t be choosers, after all,” Helios mocked its words earlier.
The Primus demon bucked weakly in response but failed to throw him off. Ignoring its final resistance, he started the ritualistic breathing exercise. He regurgitated a spew of invisible tendrils that extended into the throat of the Primus demon. It coughed out a thick stream of life force in response. He could hear the sound of disgruntled objection coming from the paralyzed Tsiyaha underneath.
“Sorry, Tsiyaha. But a deal’s a deal. The first one’s mine,” Helios gloated, hovering his face over the fallen Primus demon while licking his lips in anticipation.
